Is there going to be a Thunder team in the National League next year?
If so, what is required in Dunedin to improve performance etc?
Positive responses only.

Need to have a complete roster, not go into the season with only 18 players.
Need to have full import roster, not 1.5 imports.
Apart from that there was real development in Dunedin this year in the junior ranks I thought, also the local players that did play have developed to give a good base for next year.
I also think people need to keep perspective, the Thunder is still new, and yes they did get beaten by record scores. But I think full roster of imports would drastically change that. Thunder did win a game, and were competitive on occasion against the Swarm and Stampede.
The admirals went a long time without winning a game.
August 18, 2009 at 5:06 am #14016KyleMemberMan that’s a big question. There’s going to be some end-of-season meetings and looking ahead to next year.
On my list of things (off the top of my head):
1. Long term coaching plan. It’s very noticeable that there is no consistent plan in some areas of the Thunder’s play year to year. Which is what happens when you get in new coaches. Having one coach, or one agreed upon coaching system for the medium term would allow players to build on what they learnt last year this year and look ahead into the future. It’d also enable the lower levels of the club to coach players towards Thunder’s requirements.
2. DIHA-Thunder relationship. We’ve let this slide from both ends. I’m developing a model in my head whereby Thunder supports club activities (coaching etc), and the club pushes more people into supporting Thunder off-ice – merchandising, promotions etc.
3. Sub-Thunder grade. Dunedin doesn’t have a premiere grade for players who are either unable to commit to the NZIHL, or who aren’t at the right level. We’ll be looking at a pre-NZIHL season Prem grade to try and push those players to get better. We need a pool of 50 players to choose from when it comes to Thunder, not 25 – 30.
(Admirals lost the final in the first season Aaron)
August 18, 2009 at 5:47 am #14017Chin StrapMemberI think Thunder should pull out (wait fo the positive)…..put a development program together with Queenstown and the SIHL .i.e. coaching ideas, U16, U18 and players. We would be stronger together (personal veiw only)

[/quote:ibdpu58q]Why didn’t that happen pre-Thunder? Even if Dunedin was just a feeder stream for Stampede, that type of suggestion would have been helpful. I forsee problems of folding a team and then re-starting. It will set the league back.
I agree with Azzy in that a full roster of quality imports will greatly improve the team. 5 imports and consistent structured coaching will make them competitive instantly in my opinion.
Kyle also hit on needing coaching in place. Losing Bode despite any criticism against her is a major factor in the teams decline. The current coaches could not do what she did for the DIHA and Thunder. I’m not saying she is the solution but you need someone of her calibre. She could impart a system onto young players and she was also a fan favorite amongst the youngsters and their parents. Those parents are the ones ferrying the kids to Thunder games. They need to find someone like her who can build up a program from the ground up.
More people need to be playing competitive hockey. I don’t think Dunedin can rely on SIHL alone. They need a solid stand alone competition.
Almost all of the problem areas have been identified. If strides can be made towards addressing them seriously, Thunder will be perfectly fine as will the lower grades. My opinion as well
August 18, 2009 at 6:53 am #14019imported_RyanMemberI can’t see any reason why the Thunder would pull out apart from for financial reasons. They’ve done fine and haven’t had their butts kicked too severely so pulling out would seem kinda stupid unless they can’t afford to foot the bill to compete.

If so what improvements in his head are necessary?

[/quote:ynqo3cqd]That is the funniest thing ever, as to the first question – Thunder need to be there if this sport is going to continue to grow.

Imports would be a good start, coach maybe? – one who doesn’t play Ice Hockey like Chess (which I think has been proved doesn’t work)
would be good to get STP and DTN together pre-season.August 18, 2009 at 11:20 am #14024imported_RyanMember"kelf6966":peugngfw wrote:Ummmmm 1 – 0 – 15 GDF -100[/quote:peugngfw]I don’t consider those stats to be that bad. They’re not good, but not “lets give up coz we suck” bad. I’ve been on teams with massively worse stats and I don’t think we ever considered pulling out of the league because of it.
August 18, 2009 at 11:32 am #14025vpatrolMember42 for and 142 against. That’s like losing each game by a score of 3.4 to 1 (if that’s possible). In that light, its not too bad. They were either competitive or blown out.

[/quote:w8qk5rfz]Come on guys even finishing a cricket season 100 runs/goals whatever down it is pretty bad.
That said, they showed signs of what I would hope them to be in the future and that is at least competitive.Good thing the Volts did well this year, Otago sport seem to be going through a bit of a drought.
August 18, 2009 at 11:48 am #14027vpatrolMemberAdd Fazende to last years Thunder roster and I think it would be a very competitive team. Thunder lost some important players who weren’t replaced with imports. That won’t happen again next year. They will be ok.

I’ve been on teams which averaged scores of about 10 : 0.5 goals per game and we never considered that a reason to stop playing. If we’d been being beaten 20 : 0 it would have been different, but we did score the occasional goal and rarely got beat by more than 20 goals even when the other team were trying to sink as many in the net as possible.
