3 to 2 loss to thunder, apparently real close game!
June 14, 2009 at 9:21 am #11491nziceMemberExcellent game – lots of intensity and physical play, clean game, but on the edge – well handled by the refs. The winning goal came right at the end of the game – hugh pressure on Dunedin net throughout the game 60 shots (to 20 or 28). Rick played in goal and had a blinder. The goals thunder scored capitalised on their opportunities – Swarm once again missed net, hit posts and when it was on, were defeated time and time again by Rick. Well done – should make for an exciting season – sorry photos taking longer…

Not sure exactly how the game went or who played but I was told Thunder was up 1-0 after the first and then they lost 7-3. That’s not to shabby considering their games last year. The fact that they kept them scoreless in the first and were winning is a good sign. We’ll see how the second game goes today. Might have to watch out next week Vince!

I’m looking forward to a close game next weekend and a few Thunder wins at the expense of someone other than us.
June 14, 2009 at 9:37 am #11493imported_RyanMemberThese results sound promising for 2009.
Last year their first games were losses by 8-2 and 3-10 I think.
June 14, 2009 at 5:45 pm #11494battered_and_bruisedMemberWe also have to remember that the reffing in those first 2 games last year had Canterbury, Southern and Dunedin all very angry on how poorly the reffing was in those games. I mean it is saying something when the winning teams from both of those games also complained about the reffing.
June 14, 2009 at 9:10 pm #11495KyleMemberThe game report for game 1 is here:
Presumably game 2 will go up soon?
Sounds like a pretty good start to the season for Thunder, looking forward to Saturday and Sunday.
June 14, 2009 at 9:58 pm #11496KyleMemberPhotos from game 1 are up on the NZIHF photo stream too. Some nice shots.
Looks like ex-Dunedin referee Mark Hareb got to line:

You’ll see a local Dunedin linesman on the ice for both games this weekend.
June 15, 2009 at 12:08 am #11497Azzy77ModeratorLook out for Dunedin’s new power forward….Blakey Sinclair scoring a goal after positioning himself well in front of the goalie, and picking up a sweet sweet Simon Christos Pass….

[/quote:3dg5e81e]I had an exam this morning at 9 when the team was flying back. Plus I was injured so I didn’t make the original squad going down until it was to late to do anything about my exam.

June 15, 2009 at 5:37 am #11500plod16MemberIt is ironic that people continue to blame everyone except themselves when things don’t go their way, eg the refs etc. I have been lucky enough to be in a position to speak with a large number of our ‘elite’ players recently and apparently a lot of them haven’t bothered to read the rule book at all, let understand the application of it. If you are unhappy about the level of officiating, I would suggest that you attend some of the training sessions that are scheduled.

June 15, 2009 at 6:25 am #11502ActiveMemberjeez ref, the only mention of bad officiating was from a Canadian living in Canada commenting on last years game and I seem to remmember there was an element of truth to that comment.
I heard a rumour that the thunder are getting some new high tech jerseys that are gonna give at least a two goal per game advantage to them. All very secretive. Dunedin Thunder: best dressing room and best dressed award.June 15, 2009 at 7:10 am #11503Defense101MemberDon’t think he’s talked to everyone on the team because I’ve actually started to ref and am taking the course this weekend because I want to do something about “Bad” officiating. Actually just think it’s a great way to make some extra coin and get some extra skating time. Good work Thunder for the weekend though. Lead the first game after the first and then came close to a win in the second game. Next weekend will be fun when we have our full squad and our injured players are back in.
June 15, 2009 at 8:04 am #11504vpatrolMemberBig surprise that players blame refs! You would have to live under a rock to not know that. Some players have never opened a rule book. Does that negate the opinion of those who do know the rules? The quality of reffing is not of a high standard across NZ. Refs have good games and bad games. Different refs apply the rules differently. Players should be more aware of rules. They don’t have to be refs to do this though. Refs should also continue to improve, which I think most do. They should also accept that they make bad calls just like players make bad passes and goalies make bad saves or lack of saves. Personal accountibility covers players and refs.
First two games of last season was poorly officiated by the way. Wick is correct in saying that.
