MemberHere is the official quote from the ODT on the 1st April 2009.
“Ice hockey in New Zealand is played like rugby on ice,” he told the Otago Daily Times yesterday.
“It should be played like chess.
“The game should be more strategic than physical. Every move should be planned and the players should be thinking two steps ahead when a call is made.”
The rugby philosophy is ingrained in New Zealand ice hockey teams and they tend to play a more crash, bash and hope style of game.
“The players have potential here,” van Poucke said.
“My job is to educate the Dunedin Thunder players into a new way to play the game.”
Will be interesting to see which style comes out on top in the NZIHL.

MemberHaha I like the way you put that it’s pretty funny and true.

MemberThe quickest analogy I could think of is that hockey is like a standup comedy. It is usually very fast paced and the comedian has a set of jokes that they will use to achieve their goal and will cycle through the jokes to get the result. If something happens differently then what they expect they they go with it and improvise to achieve the same result.

MemberWhat no pole for this weekends games?
Let me start one:Saturday Night – Stampede 7 – 1 Thunder
Sunday Afternoon – Stampede 10 – 2 ThunderI think Saturday will be hard fought game, but Crash Bash and Hope will win the day,
Sunday a different story, as if the Thunder get locked in their changing room all night in Queenstown it could be pretty hard to get themselves thawed out before the Sunday game.June 26, 2009 at 11:37 am #11572plod16
Memberbang and crash and hope for a suitable outcome is doomed to fail against a team that plays a system based game, the stampede will eat it up all night cos some thunder players over commit themselves to the check and this opens up possibly 5 on 4 or 5 on 3 situations and you can’t afford to do this in your d zone. Thunder need a better d system. I think kelf’s scores would be a realistic result.

MemberWhere are all these comments about getting locked in changing rooms coming from? Did that actually happen?

MemberNot sure, I hope not would be a really sad day if that sort of thing started to happen.
Still good to make jokes about! -
