THis is fantastic news! even if we are behind in skill, which i dont believe we will be: on the basis of numbers, we have a smaller league to pull players from and we still compete with the aussie national team. so theoretically their strength will be diluted across the 8 teams they have making the nzihl and aihl teams relatively even.
im sure costs and the like will be sorted out, this is a primo opportunity for tv promotion etc which brings in sponsorship monies to reduce costs if not elimiate them completelyAugust 24, 2011 at 12:02 am #17247vpatrolMemberhmmm…interesting theory Blake except for the fact that they have greater numbers of registered players in centers that are larger then ours. Not saying we can’t compete but your stats analysis is pretty crap. haha. They have a greater talent pool to draw from. (not to mention that our IB’s came from 5 teams and the AIHL select team came from 2).
I personally think our season is too short anyways so extra games would be nice. The extra games will certainly help draw higher quailty imports to the teams that have qualified for the champions league.
August 24, 2011 at 3:05 am #17248ActiveMemberI made a comment about NZ teams being less skilled than Aus teams but I see that as a plus because to improve you need to play better players/teams so NZ teams have more to gain

[/quote:3qc66uda]agree. there will be a big gap but every year it should (hopefully) get smaller
August 24, 2011 at 5:54 am #17250vpatrolMemberThere’s enough IB’s on each of the top teams that with imports matching the quality of the aihl imports, it will be competitive. Every team has a goalie that would not look out of place in aussie.
August 24, 2011 at 10:37 am #17251thirteenMemberVince it doesn’t matter how big your pool of eligible players is, the ice blacks pool of players is much smaller than aussie but we are competitive with them at world champs now, so why would our nzihl teams not b competitive with the aihl teams?
August 24, 2011 at 11:33 am #17252vpatrolMemberI’m saying your logic is wrong about talent pool being spread out over there. They have a lot of good players who don’t play for the nat team. Melbourne had so many players who were capable of playing AIHL but didn’t have enough room on the Ice, so they created another team, the Mustangs. Our best players locals can compete with their best locals however up to this point, their import players are much higher quality then ours. That I think will be a difference for the teams. As long as we don’t send teams like the Thunder over there to play, we should be competitive!
August 24, 2011 at 8:26 pm #17253KyleMemberFrom the conversation I had last night, these series should be self-funding, which would be a relief.
Looking at running it mid-season, so gaps will need to be made in both leagues to allow it.
August 25, 2011 at 3:05 am #17254thirteenMemberIs that the same thunder youre not good enough to play for? easy fix for the imports, we just recruit better imports, more like polozov, but not illegal immigrants
August 25, 2011 at 5:43 am #17255vpatrolMembermight be the same thunder team. Who knows though, the only time I trialled, I made it.
