[/quote:1v4xn37q]Doesn’t happen very often but I’m with Vpatrol on this one so have started new thread.
There are alot of people are out there who want to help, but have no idea of what they can do.
Ask, put posters up, get on the radio if you don’t ask, people won’t help, as most people not involved with the club or team will think that it is a closed door. The more people we can get involved in Ice Hockey in New Zealand the better!
August 2, 2009 at 7:33 am #13439imported_RyanMemberInforming club members of various jobs which are unfilled and making sure that decision making processes are held in a transparent manner rather than in secret helps a lot IMO. If people can see what you are doing and know what does and doesn’t need done then they can help criticize you to help you figure out how to improve things and if they’re particularly helpful will start volunteering to help.
Simpy listing all of the jobs which need to be completed and writing a brief article/emailing them to the members to see is always a good idea. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that done within hockey circles. Usually it doesn’t work, but it at least lets people know that jobs need completed and gives them the option to chip in if they have a particular skill area that needs filled.
There’s too much secrecy amongst organisers and I have no idea why. Admittedly, organising things in public does open you to attack by dickheads, but personally I don’t care too much about that sort of thing. As long as it’s clear what is being done and that others welcome to contribute then the morons who whinge and complain generally just look like that … whinging morons.

[/quote:xm0pcq7n]I know it’s my own fault not knowing the schedule and I’m fine with that, my point was that if I don’t know when the games are played then there are probably others who don’t know either. A simple web or email notification is all it would take.

Once again this comes down to asking people to help. I would happily put posters in the lifts in Sci III (very regularly used lifts at uni) which would drive a fair few spectators to the game.
August 2, 2009 at 11:14 pm #13442Azzy77ModeratorYeah they are valid concerns.
I (wrongly) assumed the club would email bomb there members. But no more assumptions by me, everyone who wants to help promote the last game of the season PM me.
August 15/16th I will put you in touch with appropriate people.
Note Saturday game is later due to Swarm not being able to book tickets that arrive in Dunedin earlier than 5.30.Let me know what you are interested in doing. i.e. Music, hanging posters, handing out flyers, putting out nets, collecting pucks. Whatever it is, no job is too small and we would appreciate any help we get.
I guess there were (bad) assumptions made on both counts Thunder assumed peopel who wanted to help would approach them, people who wanted to help assumed Thunder would approach them.
So lets get communicatingAugust 2, 2009 at 11:17 pm #13443KyleMemberWhat worked well for worlds was giving every club member one or two posters at practice to put up at their school or work etc.
August 2, 2009 at 11:20 pm #13444Azzy77Moderatoryeah we did that within the team last game. I don’t know how many posters we get printed. But I will talk to someone who knows and see what i can do about giving some out at practises.
We had a list of areas of town, and poeple just did what they could
August 3, 2009 at 12:38 am #13445imported_RyanMemberYep, posters work well. Posting a PDF for download works okay too. I’m not sure many people bother printing them, but for the sake of posting a PDF online it’s well worth the 2 mins of effort to email it/post it online IMO.
The thing is, you’ve got people like myself who will happily post advertisements on the web, but aren’t willing to go hunting for news. I used to actively seek news to put on dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi, but in the past year I’ve lost interest and now just wait for it to arrive. In fact, unless it’s sent to me in an easily postable format (ie: already formatted or use in a news item) I generally don’t bother anymore (incidentally this is something which needs fixed, we need someone to volunteer to write new items for dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi).
With http://dunedinthunder.co.nz, what you can do is to setup news items about the games in advance of them even happening. So at the start of the season when you know the game schedules, you can setup a series of posts to be posted on the site at scheduled times. You only need to do it once and from then on they’ll be posted whenever they’re scheduled for. You couldn’t include many details in them since you wouldn’t necessarily know what would be happening, but at least there would be some sort of notification.
… come to think of it, perhaps SlapShot.net.nz would be a good place for us to setup an email notification/RSS feed system for reporting game times? Hmmmm … might need to ponder that one. We could feed it all through the forum system too, so that you guys could submit the game schedule yourself.
August 4, 2009 at 10:12 am #13446kelf6966MemberYou guys need to go and talk to Mediaworks, try and get a meeting with the GM or who ever delt with the Thunder last year, they have 7 stations up there who could really push the games.
May be too late to get much support this year, but invite them to come along to the final few games and host them and show them what it’s all about, and see what they can do for you next season.
They are always looking for local activities to get into, and depending on what you can offer them in regards to branding opportunities could really help.
August 4, 2009 at 8:07 pm #13447Rhys MMemberI would say from experinces I have had in the past, thunder, need to organise a couple of people like this, to co-ordinate things like off ice promotions, radio stations, general publicicty, on ice eventslike the amazing light and sound introduction that didnt happenthis year due to a lack ofco ordination and people willing to help. im sure there are certain people in the club with various skills, like fundraising, advertising ectera that need to be shoulder tapped.
Im sorry to say guys but things dont just happen, they need people to make that happen, and a whole club behind, look at the stampede with the queenstown club behind them, we need to follow suit
August 4, 2009 at 10:14 pm #13448Azzy77ModeratorWhats the deal with using other radio stations seeing as the league is sponsered by Bsport?
Just curious.
August 4, 2009 at 10:31 pm #13449vpatrolMemberI believe the rock has sponsored Stampede so its fair game I would say.
August 5, 2009 at 12:58 am #13450cowgirlMemberThe Rock and B Sport are owned by the same company, Mediaworks. This also includes The Edge, More FM, The Breeze and a couple of other randoms. I wouldn’t recommend going elsewhere when they already sponsor the league under the title of B Sport. Any of the other listed stations would be fine though. So no ‘Classic Hits’ people!!! hahaha
August 5, 2009 at 1:06 am #13451vpatrolMemberI might be mistaken but I think we advertised with classic rock.
August 5, 2009 at 1:32 am #13452cowgirlMemberHmmmmm, maybe Classic Hits?? Classic Rock rebranded as Radio Hauraki a long time ago and I don’t think they’re in Dunners. ” title=”Tongue” />
Anyway in the future, Mediaworks should be number #1 choice as they have put a lot in to the league since it started. -
