So wasn’t that great commentary of last nights game?
Who was the owner of those Dulcet tones that were providing not only play by play but colour commentary?I think someone should pay him or her whoever it was to cover all of the Thunders home games?
Who agrees?
How do you think we can broadcast this? And the only complaint I would have is someone needs to get this mysterious and sexy commentator a Don Cherry suit?
June 9, 2008 at 1:22 am #8724battered_and_bruisedMemberAaron, from what I heard you couldn’t change your voice from colour man and commentator.
June 9, 2008 at 1:31 am #8725Azzy77ModeratorUm Ryan the Budget didn’t allow us to have a pair in the commentary box, so I took it upon myself to do the commentary like a local radio, where the play-by-play announcer slips in some colour comments…..
I did however have enough money in the budget for some bench reporters but they all sucked so I fired them….
However, if the public demands different voices for play-by-play and colour I can work on that….
June 9, 2008 at 4:11 am #8726KyleMemberDoes anyone know anything about radio broadcasting?
I’ve been toying with the idea of broadcasting commentary over radio. I don’t know much about how this would work, but it’d be the same sort of system that they use to broadcast drive in movies. Anyone could bring a walkman radio, or a stereo into the rink and get live commentary.
If the games were videoed, then the radio commentary could be put back on top of the audio track.
If there’s any old style radio people who know about this sort of technology, let me know if I’m wasting brain cells thinking about it.
June 9, 2008 at 4:45 am #8727Azzy77ModeratorYeah Kyle they were along the lines I was thinking… hence my practise run last night… however i have no idea how to actually broadcast…..
I am waiting for a review from Tom or Regan? Who actually heard me….
June 9, 2008 at 4:48 am #8728Rhys MMemberWell im not an old style radio person, but I can tell you about radio broadcasting. ” title=”Wink” />
Its an option that could be looked into I guess, i can accquire the gear. There’s a few issues surronding how we can broadcast
The PEP has to be no more the 5 watts, which is simple to do so it woould only be coverage within say a few km of the rink
The other issue is with the radio inspector, getting a frequency allocation which again isn’t hard to do and only other issues are technical such as modulation levels etc but I can sort that out
We do it for work all the time, its simple to do and probably not a bad idea ” title=”Grin” />
June 9, 2008 at 4:53 am #8729Rhys MMemberWhoops, by the just for those non technical people out there PEP is peak envelope power, so thats the final output power of the transmitter, you oculd have 20watts going through the various amplifiers and stages but only 5 watts of transmission power coming out of the arieal is allowed
June 9, 2008 at 5:08 am #8730ChrisMemberI think Kyle’s referring to having the commentary available within the immediate rink area, so you wouldn’t need 5 watts anyway. Honestly, you could use a battery powered FM transmitter and it would work perfectly within the rink, especially if you elevated the transmitter to give good LOS coverage.
June 9, 2008 at 5:09 am #8731Azzy77ModeratorWell I think we should discuss this further… maybe not for the first game, but definately for subsequent games….. I quite enjoyed commentating for the eight people sitting around me last night… I don’t know how I did…. I would be interested in hearing from those around me…. and having a two people would definately help….
So if there was enough interest I would definately consider reprising my role for a wider audience
June 9, 2008 at 5:15 am #8732Rhys MMemberyeah for sure, im available any time for a yarn. Its not hard to do, if we can work stuff out i can source the gear and some helpers just to ensure it all runs smoothly
June 9, 2008 at 5:20 am #8733Rhys MMemberThe 5w i was reffering to is the max power were allowed. if we start exceeding that is when we get above that is when bills from the radio inspector arrive. One of my jobs is a broadcast technician for the radio network, telecom amnd the like, so Im sure i can put something together to suit the club
June 9, 2008 at 8:01 am #8734ChrisMemberYou know that realistically small stations triple-quadruple their output and just turn it down if somebody notices ” title=”Cheesy” />
Inferno (107 fm, I think) is a perfect example.
June 9, 2008 at 9:17 am #8735Rhys MMemberOh for sure, I can think of small stations in the past that have done that with their PEP power has been increased by more than 4 times! the licence that I would have to use for my gear that can do the broadcast, is a stsp (short term special purpose) and its generally inspocted by a RSM or MED person, just becasue it can pump out more than five watts, nut also has the abilitys to do a lot of damage on a lot of big radio stations. Also becasue we can have cross channel splatter etc occuring. I also have to make sure all my Is and Ts are crossed, its not a good look for a professional person to get caught out!
but you have to remember that a high power output is no use if you’ve got a poor arieal system anywayy
But anyway thats beyond the point, I have all that sorted, 5 watts is what we’re allowed to use and we dont even need to go that high, I would imagine a watt at the most mounted anywhere will cover the whole rink area quite happily.
June 9, 2008 at 10:38 am #8736imported_RyanMemberCool ” title=”Smiley” /> Nice to know we have an extra area of expertise in the club!
I find the concept of tuning in to hear commentary at a live sports event a little weird, but I would definitely listen in myself.
Ohhh, brain surge … save the commentary to MP3 format and we could stream it over the net ” title=”Smiley” /> Perhaps live? I listen to a Podcast on a service called TalkShoe which we could transmit it via live over the internet, people from other parts of the country (world even) could even phone in and give their input if they felt it, although that would require the commentators to have net access to unmute people as they called in.
You know, we could pull this together by this weekend if Rhys can get the radio gear sorted. I’m pretty sure the live streaming would be quite simple, just a matter of grabbing the FM signal and sending it down the tube to TalkShoe to stream to the masses.
International hockey radio … sounds impressive!
June 9, 2008 at 10:55 am #8737imported_RyanMemberI tried TalkShoe just then and it took me a grand total of about 1 min to set it up and have a live podcast running ” title=”Smiley” />
There may be more suitable services around though (TalkShoe is designed for interative podcasts, not basic commentary), so if anyone knows of a suitable site, then post back here with a link to it.
