Hell Azzy! I wasnt even there nor did I speak to anyone who was there or who even heard you and in fact The only thing I knew about your commentry was via this site but I thought you were brilliant!
June 11, 2008 at 5:56 am #8754imported_RyanMemberSo Aaron, is this going ahead? If so, I’ll post a news item about it so that people know to bring an FM radio and so that other centres can tune into it. Some Canterbury people seem interested in it listening if we can hook it up live, so I’m assuming other centers will be interested too.
PS: I’d better check with the rink about using their net connection for a start I spose.
June 11, 2008 at 9:47 am #8755Azzy77ModeratorRyan see my PM
Otherwise Ryan or Rhys? they are the men with the hook ups….
I will be calling the game regardless even if its only to Tom and Reagan sitting right behind me and Rhys and Ryan on either side of me… tom told me he would listen if I don’t get a medium capable of a wider audience…
June 11, 2008 at 9:55 am #8756Rhys MMemberyeah im looking at some options for hookups, our work gear is out for the weekend ” title=”Sad” />
But im using some of my contacts in the “broadcasting industry” to see what I can source for the weekend ” title=”Smiley” />
So hopefully we will have something and Aaron might be able to make a entrance to the real world of radio broadcasting. Im seeing what I can do with the gear, but will definately have something for the next round anyway, becasue I’ll have longer notice to jack something up.
But seriously if we can pull it off with the gear and stuff its gonna be pretty awesome ! ” title=”Smiley” />
June 11, 2008 at 10:07 am #8757Rhys MMemberJust in case anyones interested, these are some guidelines I’ve noted that we’d need to stick to, but i’ll make sure we’re well within those guidelines!
Without limiting the provision, the 25km rule applies as follows:
within 25km of any low power FM transmitter, there may be no more than one other low power FM transmitter; and
within 25km of a spectrum/radio licence transmitter, there may be no more than one low power FM transmitter;broadcasting substantially the same programme.
“Low Power FM transmitter operators, at least once every three hours, must broadcast the contact details of the person responsible for the transmissions.”
This requirement could be met by a spoken announcement of the name by which the station is identified, or the name of the person responsible for the establishment and operation of the transmitter, where that name is the subject of a current telephone directory listing.
If there is no telephone directory listing, the requirement could be met by including one of the following in the announcement:
a business telephone number
a business address
a residential telephone number
a residential address
a valid e-mail address
a postal addressBut i’ll sort all that out, but its jsut a bit of a guideline of and as to what hoops, im gonna have to jump through to arrange this for the weekend ” title=”Smiley” />
I’ll see what I can do though!
June 11, 2008 at 10:18 am #8758Rhys MMemberOk guys, I’ve just recieved word that yes i can get some gear ” title=”Grin” />, provided its available for the weekend! Now I dont know if we’re gonna have to pay for it or not yet.
I’ll try for the sponsored/donated approach first which should work as I’ve just hired $1300 of gear of this person. But if we cant get it sponsored for one reason or another would be prepared to pay for it as a one of just for these games untill I can sort something more permanent?
Aaron- your probably the man in the know over things like this? What do you think?

It would need to be quite cheap I imagine as it’s not exactly something which will be heavily used. Plus the the DIHA (who I’m assuming would be paying for it, or maybe the rink?) has almost no time left to make a decision which is tricky since such decisions are usually made at monthly committee meetings, the last one of which was held a few days ago.
June 11, 2008 at 10:26 am #8760imported_RyanMemberIf it was cheap enough, we coud just ask for donations from people here on the forum. I’d be willing to chip in $10 if absolutely necessary.
June 11, 2008 at 10:33 am #8761imported_RyanMemberWould something like this do the trick? It would need to travel about ~80-100m and through two walls to reach the rinks computer (assuming the commentators were sitting in the soft seats in the main stand). I have absolutely no idea how far these things can send their signal so it may be utterly useless for our purposes, but thought I’d post it just in case.

[/quote:1ijjnd34]The $39 product above outputs 0.15 W.
At last resort we could buy one and return it the next day if it didn’t cut the mustard.
June 11, 2008 at 8:09 pm #8762Rhys MMemberActually, it was one of those I was looking at getting, I think it could to the trick, im sorting it out afterschool today with someone I know who has one, remember we can always mount it up higher if we need to to improve coverage.
What would be the most suitbale computer to use for the commentray Ryan? Can you sort something?
June 11, 2008 at 8:17 pm #8763Rhys MMemberWhoops, sorry computer program. We can use my comuter if need be
June 12, 2008 at 12:36 am #8764Azzy77ModeratorI would imagine we wouldn’t want to spend too much money if any…..
But I am just a pretty face and a great voice…
I have no say or financial clout…. talk to Wick.. who could talk to Al, and see what we could arrange….

[/quote:33y9vvuh]I thought you were getting a full on commercial grade radio transmitter or something. If it’s just a crappy $39 thing, then we may as well just buy it and worry about getting money from someone later. I’m sure someone will stump up the cash for it. We could beg for donations if necessary, I don’t think $39 would be hard to scrounge together. Heck, we could even charge access to it if we really wanted – there’s bound to be a few people out there stupid enough to pay $10 to listen to Aaron rant for an hour or so ” title=”Tongue” />
"Rhys M":33y9vvuh wrote:What would be the most suitbale computer to use for the commentray Ryan? Can you sort something?[/quote:33y9vvuh]Do you mean for sending the live feed? The computer in the office at the rink was what I had in mind. It’s already connected to the net, so just a matter of plugging an FM radio into the microphone jack and logging into TalkShoe.com. If they’re got a multiport router we could plug a laptop in I spose, but I doubt they’ll care if we use their office computer. They have a broadband connection, so should have 128 kbps upload (minimum) and the audio should only need ~80 kbps so they could still use the internet if they had the burning desire to poke someone on FaceBook during the game.
June 12, 2008 at 3:25 am #8766imported_RyanMemberFYI, I checked with Neil and he said it’s fine. He just wants us to have it setup in the afternoon so we don’t need to bother anyone at the rink when they’re flat out busy before the game. I’d still need to walk into their office and turn it on, but that’s not exactly going to bother them.
EDIT: I tried one of those FM transmitters from Dick Smith. They’re pretty crap. They’re not going to work over the ~80 m range they’ll need to cover. Which I’m not surprised about, since they’re designed for travelling from your MP3 player to your car stereo – a grand total of about 50 cm usually.
June 12, 2008 at 4:07 am #8767Azzy77ModeratorRyan its actually listening to Aaron rant for 3 hours or so……if anyone has any ideas for intermission interviews I am willing to listen…. or if anyone wants to be interviewed at intermissions….
Um Ryan we are setting up the lighting and music tomorrow night. So I guess we could trial the broadcast then….find out from Wick when we are doing that
I am totally sure people will pay for it… or at least Tom will or if the booster club gets massive membership, they may have funds for commentary….
