Hi.
Nice site design. Okay, I need your help.
So, I wanna make my little sister’s site, and I am looking for site template.
Can you advice some online place or other resource where I can find many site templates? It would be better if it will be free:)
I think many of us have personal sites, do you design it yourself? Thanks a lot, Bill.
January 7, 2007 at 9:20 am #1979imported_RyanMemberHi,
Yeah I designed this myself.
I have no idea where to get templates from sorry, I’ve never used one before. I designed this in a combination of Adobe Photoshop and PaintshopPro and coded everything by hand.If you’re interested in designing your own site then I recommend doing some google searching on HTML and CSS. If you get stuck and need help feel free to post here, I’m more than happy to help ” title=”Smiley” /> Another source of help is [url:bik3seat]http://www.sitepoint.com/[/url:bik3seat] which has a whole fleet of expert web designers who can help with anything and everything.
Sitepoint also has a market place where you can pay to have websites professionally prepared for you, although that’s probably not what you’re looking for. Cost is NZ$250 for a decent looking design, plus another ~$200 for coding.
Also, if you want something simple to maintain and update, there’s a whole fleet of CMS (content management systems) around which allow you to update your site through a simple online wysiwyg text editor rather than having to edit the code by hand. I’m currently in the process of integrating a custom built one into this site but I keep redesigning it before I get it finished as I always find a better way of doing things! I haven’t used any of the off-the-shelf CMS’s but I do know a little about them. Here’s my rather uneducated opinion of three of them:
[url:bik3seat]http://wordpress.org/[/url:bik3seat] – very popular, not as advanced as Joomla but simpler to use and templating is fairly simple
[url:bik3seat]http://www.joomla.org/[/url:bik3seat] – extremely popular, very commonly used with large corporations, perhaps not as easy to customise as WordPress and has lots of features you’re unlikely to use.
[url:bik3seat]http://www.drupal.org/[/url:bik3seat] – Like Joomla, but simpler I think, with a few less functions.Hopefully that’s of some help ” title=”Smiley” />

January 8, 2007 at 7:57 am #1981imported_RyanMemberWhat kind of programming do you do Mike?
I’ve been trying to learn a bit about PHP lately, but I’m not very good at it. Still trying to get to grips with the absolute basics.
January 8, 2007 at 8:07 am #1982imported_RyanMemberI just checked out [url:1c01x0b0]http://www.oswd.org/[/url:1c01x0b0]. Those templates aren’t too bad. Most templates I’ve seen are hideously badly coded but those weren’t too bad from what I saw. I checked two and there were only minor bugs here and there. They also looked a lot easier to modify than some as they’re not complicated with a bunch of nested tables all over the place. Of course I’m sure there are a few bad eggs in there, but 2/2 good ones checked isn’t too shabby.

January 8, 2007 at 11:10 pm #1983MichaelMemberI Started out with PHP and have been doing it.. gosh… must be over 6years now but have lately swayed to javascript as I am heading the dynamic ajax way of developing.
January 9, 2007 at 12:02 am #1984imported_RyanMemberMike. Do you have any experience installing web mail programs? I can get webmail acounts setup for our webhost easy enough, but I’d like to have a really fancy custom templated interface so that it could be integrated into the existing site without looking to out of place, kinda like the forum is now (it looked quite different to the rest of the site till recently). I tried installing RoundCube but I had issues trying to configure it to work correctly as I really don’t know what the heck I’m doing – just sort of hacking at it and following online advice to get it to work. My webhost will let me install RoundCube via a CPanel but I can’t customise it that way unfortunately, I need to manually install it to customise it ” title=”Sad” />
I have a vague plan of offering @dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi email accounts to members, either for a small fee ($5 or so, money going back to the club) or maybe for free.

Where the heck are you people finding our site from? I didn’t think information about ice hockey in little old Dunedin, New Zealand would be much interest to a web designer in Montenegro!
