Dudes, dunno where the fact are coming from but before stuff is confirmed on here you should check it somehow…
Training is on tonight at 7pm not thursday, and a lot of people rely on the website to get practice times and they think times have changed, and may not turn up tonight.
So just a word of advice babes, if you arent coming to the trainings that are being discussed, or you simply have “heard” that training is not on, confirm it first, or ring the rink, so that people do not go on here and then not come because of a rumour…
Peace,
STIFFNovember 20, 2007 at 4:23 am #7566rookie19MemberSorry that sounds kinda blatant, but its just everyone texts me and ryan confused as about wen trainings and games are, so would be nice for people to know the right info ay.
Peace

[/quote:2ukgjao8]I suspect Ryan Hellyer got that from here:

Which is where I got it from as well. When did it go from two practices on Tuesday to permanent change, and why didn’t anyone say?

[/quote:2ukgjao8]Given where the information came from, I’m not sure you’re in a position to complain Stefan!
November 20, 2007 at 11:07 am #7568battered_and_bruisedMemberThe Thursday practices were only suppoesed to happen twice, but since the ice show crap, it got held over for another week and [b:15gxv24j]TODAY[/b:15gxv24j] Jackie just booked it in for Tuesdays. So from now on, the Thursday night practices are now switched to Tuesday. If someone is going to post up time changes and they want to make sure, is it really that hard to pick up a phone and call the rink to find out the times? I mean it is in Neil’s little book of magical happenings which he keeps in the office so everyone can see. Either that or call up Jackie as a last resort. For the love of god, don’t just post things up for the hell of it, double check it first. This little mishap today could have been avoided if Ryan (not me) picked up a phone and called the rink… As for the game, it is not on because of the ice show stuff. Merci d’écouter moi des commentaires. Laisse la prise peu plus de soin le moment prochain où signalant la session chronomètre. Si vous voulez traduire ceci, allez : http://babelfish.altavista.com/
November 20, 2007 at 11:25 am #7569rookie19MemberThat wasnt aimed at anyone, just meant that before people say whether there will be ice or not at whatever times, they should probably check by ringing or whatever. Or tell everyone to text me or Ryan or something that way everyone will make it that wants to. Theres just so much confusion from people on various things they have read on the website, people come into work often asking about times of training as 100 people have mentioned different times on the forum. This website helps everyone get the info they need, but i think this will improve it if we have certain people commenting on ice time rather than a whole lot or people saying why or why not there will be ice time on thursday at 7pm when they really dont know for sure. Kinda sounds like people trying to outdo each other on the forum all the time with their background knowledge of dunedin ice sports hahahaha.
There must be some way we can make it easier to confirm ice times? I know with some Phys Ed stuff for uni we use a system where u write in a booking time and it will appear for everyone that goes to it, is there something similar Ryan could design for this site. Kind of like a timetable where Neil or Hans can enter a booking as it is placed? Do they even use internet at the rink? mmm… many questions to be answered, but it would be sweet if there was a huge timetable on this site so everyone could see exactly what bookings the stadium has in advance? could work? mabye not?
Peace all,
STIFF ” title=”Cheesy” />November 20, 2007 at 8:13 pm #7570ActiveMemberI think a computerised booking system that everyone can view via the internet (but not edit) is being explored by the rink. I will bring it up at the next board meeting. I would suggest the breakdown in communication has more to do with miscommunication from others who dont use the forum.
November 20, 2007 at 8:59 pm #7571ChrisMembererm, google calendar for the win?
Also, just one quick point: I know you’re not pointing fingers here stef, and that’s all good, but let’s all keep in mind that Ryan Hellyer puts in a huge amount of time to this website, waaaay more than is apparent. He also puts in his own money to keep the site running, and the DIHA and all of you get this for free. To give you an idea, if you wanted a professional IT guy to do this, the DIHA would probably have had to spend over $20,000 to get this site the way it is. So, let’s all just be a little less hasty when we start loading up our beleaguered web admin with extra jobs. It’s not like he’s also trying to complete a PhD or anything…..
November 20, 2007 at 9:04 pm #7572KyleMemberA computerised booking system for the rink which could be viewed over the internet would be wonderful.
Until the rink moves on from doing its booking in a paper diary however…
Ryan Hellyer can only work with the information that he’s given on the web site, if people change times and don’t tell him or post it, then he, and everyone else who gets their information from the web site and forum, won’t know.
I’m not sure how many times he has to say “people need to tell me when they’re changing things” before it gets through.
I would have been there last night if anyone had told me that Tuesday night was permanent.
November 20, 2007 at 9:12 pm #7573imported_RyanMemberI post the times which I am told by the DIHA. Period. I occasionally post unconfirmed times or times which I assume are correct since I’ve heard them from a reliable source – I did this with the practice times the other week which I received by PM from Ryan Wick.
And I’m not changing that system just because someone wants me to phone around a bunch of people asking what time the practice is on. My job is not to arrange practice times, my job is to run the website, which I do. The people who organise practices are supposed to inform me when they change, they don’t, hence the confusion. However that’s not my fault and I’m certainly not apologising for it or doing a bunch of extra work because of it.
Ryan,
PS: the site is definitely not worth $20,000 but thanks for the compliment Chris ” title=”Cheesy” />
November 21, 2007 at 7:11 am #7574MaccaMemberJust a note on the scheduling system. I have talked to Neil about this and they used to use one a few years back but had even more problems than what they currently have with the little black book.
I am willing to have a go at writing it in conjunction with others but i need to know more detailed specifications as to what they would like. And no that is not an invite to list it on this forum incase you were wondering.
Oh and Ryan i have done a little bit of research lately into the cost of web development and Chris’s guess would be about right it even might be a little low. And that is just for the initial set up not to mention the continious updating that you have done.

If you go to the wrong place it will cost you $20,000+ but if you know where to look you will get the same sort of service for much less. For the record, if some random person reads this, I’m happy to create a similar site (in fact a lot better) for $2000, email me at webadmin@dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi for more info. Of course, like Macca said, updating would be an additional cost but there’s no way it would approach $20,000.

I have a crude system set up which will handle event scheduling and that will be available by 2008 hopefully. It won’t cover practice times though. Macca, PM coming your way with details of the event scheduling system.

Never Ryan, ever put crap in the same sentence as Ice show!Is that were the commor goes or does it go after the ever?
November 21, 2007 at 10:36 am #7578battered_and_bruisedMemberlol I knew that would get someone lol. Tom you made my night…well actually you didn’t but still, it was funny that comeone picked up on that wee thing and took offence to it and it was even better cause it was you Tom.
November 21, 2007 at 12:25 pm #7579rookie19MemberHahaha misinterpretation sorry. It wasnt directed at Ryan at all, he does a superb job at putting up what he knows and is told! This website is upto date almost to the minute, the time and effort he puts in is outstanding, and when there is any news, we know about it which is great! It was more a suggestion for random people on here who speculate as to why hockey could be on or not, my reply is to simply ring the rink or check first, as many of the kids especially read the random posts and obviously read them wrong, and get horribly confused.
I seriously think that the online ice booking idea would totally rock the party, it works so well for Phys Ed and think its perfect for what we want. On this website it is ok to search through and find what information you are looking for, but to have a giant diagram form of the practice times and game info would be the best way to go I recon. Make it really colourful so everyone is drawn to it. And mabye you guys will let me design a nice template for it with flowers and hearts all over it? Can i please have that job?
Peace all,
