As of right now, there’s 9 teams still in the running for the Stanley Cup – Stars and Canucks are going to a game 7. Who’s your pick, and why?

I’m picking Buffalo. Sentimentally I like Ducks, but I don’t particularly like their team this year, even though they’ve had a good season. Feels too set up solely for the purpose of winning the cup rather than playing good looking hockey, which I don’t really like. I’d pick Ducks or Red Wings to play in the Western Conference final, but I think they’ll both choke on the big stage, so I think an Eastern Conference team is going to win it. Rangers have had the best start in the postseason with a sweep, but I can’t see picking Rangers working out. I’d see Buffalo and NJ playing it out for the Eastern Conference final, and I think the Sabres will topple the Devils and then take the cup in probably 6 games.

Yea i agree with Kyle, I love how the Sabres play iv been picking them all season, i think they can win it. Chris Drury, Danny Briere, Maxim Afinogenov, Jason Pominville, Derek Roy, just to name a few of the clutch players on their lineup. They have all scored big goals this season, briere especially. I just dont think any other team has enough speed and flare to match them for a whole game, especially how the nhl is emphasising speed now, and the fast players (EUROPEANS, SORRY RYAN) are starting to dominate!

I thin we will be looking at a Buffalo vs. Anaheim final, mabye san jose, they are starting to click also.

I predict Briere and Afinogenov to score some big goals like these goals from buffalo last year!! Check out goal #3 by Afinogenov, he is god!

I would have loved for the Penguins to have made it to the second round but all the great players are way to young and inexpreinced. The Rangers are playing realy good physically at the moment and i reckon if they can keep that up and stay out of the box they might just be able to knock out the Sabres out but its probally not that likely.  The Sedin brothers are playing well but Naslund is playing shit hockey but Luongo is still amazing. I realy dont like the Ducks but they are going to wipe Cannucks out no problem and probally end up going to the finals.

Winner of the Stanely cup for 2007 will be the BUFFALO SABRES.

I’m sorry but I am sick of hearing about those Damn Sabres and how good they are. Just to let the people know who aren’t familiar with the NHL schedual, they play the majority of the eastern conference teams, which since the NHL has gone to the geographic format for conferences and divisions, the Eastern Conference has been the weaker conference and still is. The Sabres have yet to run into the Western Conference powerhouses like the Ducks, Red Wings, Sharks, and a few others. The Canucks lost in a shootout with the Canucks back up Danny Sabiron in net, not Luongo. So What does that tell you about the Sabres and they only came back late in the game. So really you can’t match up the Sabres to any west coast team. Especially if they are going to play the Ducks. You really think they can skate circles around Pronger and Niedermayer, 2 former Norris Trophy winners and are still in their prime? I think not. And to top it off, the Ducks are leading the league in penalty minutes and fighting majors, so they are bloody tough as well. As for my vote, I went against my beloved Canucks and took the Ottawa Senators because I want a bloody Canadian team to win the Cup and I think they have a good chance at beating the Sabres if they do run into them. Canucks are playing like crap, at least in game 1 against the Ducks so I’m not taking them.

I would agree with you that the Western Conference is stronger than the Eastern conference. I wonder if there’s any stats out there on which team wins more – a western team or an eastern team, when games are cross-conference?

However my impression is that it’s been that way for a number of years now – at least since I started following hockey, which was 2002-2003. If that’s correct, then the winners of the cup don’t necessarily follow. During that time, the cup winners have all been Eastern conference teams (2001 – 2 Detroit won it, and certainly before this time Western teams dominate for a number of years).

So while the conference overall might be stronger in the West, I still think it’s pretty reasonable to pick an Eastern team. Obviously this is all just speculation for a few more weeks, as there won’t be any cross-conference games until the cup games.

I’m going with the Sharks.  They were built for the play-offs (not always the case in the NHL) and I think they stand a fair chance of getting the job done.

Boston Management was on crack when they traded this guy.
Thornton can lead a team to the cup.

Cheechoo and Marleau on the point for a power play.
Marleau and Cheechoo score game winners.

Interesting. Rangers tie it up 2-2 against Sabres. Ottawa is 2-1 up on the Devils, and Sharks leading Detroit. Could be heading for a few lower ranked teams upsetting the top ranked ones. If Sabres and Detroit get knocked out, I’m going to have to revert back to Ducks.

Damn Joe, you’re shading out posts by putting all those damn action shots in. What’s your favourite/best photo that you’ve taken of NHL action?

My favourite hockey photo is at home on my hard drive (dang) but it’s not an action shot.  I was working on a story about teenagers in the NHL (and was based out of San Jose) and I had been taking a bunch of photos of Marc-Edouard Vlasic.  Vlasic turned 18 just before the start of the season and, as a young defense man, was not expecting to make the roster for the season.  (Defense men usually get seasoned in the minors) I was at the game when he scored his first goal but unfortunately I missed the shot because he scored at the other end of the rink and he also celebrated his first goal behind the  net.  I was totally bummed out that I missed the shot but after the game I asked the equipment manager about the puck and he proceeded to dig it out for for me.  I took the puck over to Vlasic in the changing room and he happily agreed to pose for me.  The picture I took is kinda crappy but I felt like it was a real privilege to be able to get the shot and he was genuinely happy that I wanted to take the photo. ( and that’s turned out to be one of the photos that the agency ran)
Also, Vlasic asked me if I managed to get any photos of him battling with Crosby, he really wanted a copy….

Here’s another shot of Vlasic.  Imagine this: you’ve just turned 18, you’ve made the cut on an NHL team that is built around winning the Stanley Cup  now (the Sharks are not in a building for the future phase at all) and the coach puts you out on the ice against Jaomir Jagr.
    Yikes!

And check out the intensity expressed on Jagr’s face. Watching him play is a real treat.
