@Kyle I am under the impression the NZIHL rules are based on the IIHF ones, but not necessarily tied to them completely. For example this year is the first year the goalie measurements are going to be enforced, and since the rules and regulations on the nzihl website are down i can’t cite others.
Also if this is True how come Jacque and the guy that dominated him last year didn’t get banned for next game.
Plod asked for discussion here and mentioned it had been discussed at NZIHL meeting, so presumably the rules are not set in stone?

@Vince, your also tied with Toby on paper. Not to mention Paris Heyd.

@Plod, without knowing what the discussion about fighting pertained to, it is very hard to comment.

But in my opinion it is a decision that NZ needs to make soon. The first thing that needs to be considered is when you mention you play ice hockey in this country, you get the same response from everyone in two formats,

“Oh yeah is there heaps of fighting?”
with a/ a look of disdain/disgust in their eyes.
or b/ a look of intrigue and excitement in their eyes.

The question is do we market to fan a/ or fan b/. It is a very hard thing to decide as these groups well having certain main people in them (a/ being grandmas and hippies, b/ being young males) both groups have the a varied populous. So it is hard to judge what would be the best group to target.
I would argue in most of society group b/ is the majority with that innate bloodlust, that sees us watch car racing just in case some crashes, or not look away when someone falls over. Well this would seem to be lowest common denominator, its also the biggest section of society.

I would say that openly endorsing fighting is obviously a bad move for a variety of reasons, ie. guaranteed fight a game. But the blatant quashing of it leads to its own problems Dull games for fan b/ and more and more niggle being used within the game, because they know they can get away with it (note this is not a criticism of the referees, because its virtually impossible to detect a stray elbow or buttend, in a melee in the corner).

Um so the short answer is I think that fighting is part of the game, and attractive to many people, but in the same breath it detracts from the skills possessed by the players and turns some people away. So what do you do? I don’t know. Although I think 5 for fighting NHL styles is probably best answer.

@aston not sure I think its like 2 or 3 weeks out

    Thats 6 I know of.

I know in ideal world people should be able to just go when is Easton Cup and check website.
But hockey players and technology doesn’t mix a lot, there are the odd geek (you and I included) that spends all day trawling website for info.

But a lot of guys barely know they have an email address let alone check it….I mean I would stop short of ringing everyone in the Club.
But Paul Roth is hardly a marginal member, he has been on various committees and things over the years, and as evidenced by him posting ice hockey stuff and not his shopping list on the forum has a decent grasp of the interweb. If Paul didn’t know, then how is old who-flung who comes for drop in once a week, and thats it meant to know?

I mean Interweb is great and all, but to be honest to me there is no vibe surrounding Easton cup that makes me get excited about its appearance. I am sure I am not alone…..
You need people to be discussing in Changing room etc, to get people excited. At very least put a poster up.

I am going to have to side with Paul on this one slightly.

Easton Cup was only advertised online AKAIF, I didn’t see any posters at the rink.
I also don’t recall being asked in my prem team if anyone wanted to play Easton Cup, or if our team would like to organise team for Easton Cup.
Also putting a notice in a newsletter that is emailed out, it will probably get skimmed, or not read at all. Whereas a stand alone advert for Easton Cup would more likely grab the attention of those interested

Online is a wonderful thing if everyone uses it, but can make advertising lazy. Its all well and good saying we advertised but if you get a lot of people (6+) claiming not to have heard about it maybe you should question your advertising methods?

Also Easton Cup used to be on at Easter, so most people probably thought since it wasn’t on then, then it was off?

Word on the street is after the Capitals got knocked out of playoffs, Ovechkin inquired about playing on the Tom Terrors team. But being a lifelong Crosby fan tom rejected him outright.

Hahaha Should we get some odds running on this.

I mean sure Router has superior height, weight, reach and experience.
But if we tell Tom a frozen coke is on the line, then I think that could blow this thing wide open.

No frozen Coke I would say Router is paying $1.01 and Tom about 250:1
Frozen Coke I would dramatically alter the odds to about Rout 3.50:1 Tom Wilson 4:1

    Any adjustments?

Someone needs to pick up Argyle, he is a great NZ hockey personality
I think the league would be lacking, if you weren’t fearing those black eyes of death…..

Although I am already looking forward to the Rout-Tom Wilson battle….

Anyone got any inside word on how admirals are looking?
I hear the Swarm picked up 3 finns, on the IBs recent tour….

Yeah hopefully we get an NZIHL were everyone is there or there abouts

Vector Arena?? The one I was talking about Blake??

That Pacific Rim tournament would be awesome, count me in.

Just had another email from the guys at Douglas Webber.
Apparently its too early to  answer my questions regarding the makeup of the teams that will be coming, they are waiting to here, details of teams and players.

In 3 months there will update their website apparently so stay in touch sports fans.

    Smallest NHL arena is 16800.
But yeah I think in terms of uniqueness NZ would be good stop. But they are probably looking at build on established markets, i.e. Countries that pay for their television rights, which would put Aus ahead of NZ.

But Kyle is right in NZ, Dunedin only place capable currently is Dunedin. But old Douglas and Webber who are doing Team USA Team Canada game, propose to play in vector arena and westpac trust, which are indoor stadiums of ~15000 seats I think??? Which would put them ahead.

Btw the other guy from Douglas Webber emailed me today telling me the tickets aren’t available till next year. So apparently they don’t talk to each other regarding outgoing correspondents. Not good sign for supposed big marketeers

So like most of you I am sure I was eagerly anticipating purchasing tickets to this event, when they came up for sale in February (….okay not anywhere to be found)

First nothing on ticketek, and secondly I am forbidden to access there website http://www.nzicehockey.com

Presumably its not just me who they have decided to bar from their website? if it is I feel somewhat insulted that  I am banned, but also somewhat proud, they think of me that highly I need to be banned.

So email it is, I email the dear fellows, and they inform me the games have been delayed to next year due to delays in manufacturing the ice surface…okay cool….he goes on to inform me that he has just got back from the North America where he was hosted by both teams???

I email him back which two teams? A. I am pretty sure there is not one house where team Canada and Team USA live all year waiting for olympics
B/ The olympics have only just finished so I am pretty sure neither team would be hanging round to talk to promoter from NZ.

HE replies he was hosted by co-ordinators of both teams in Toronto and NY.
Upon closer inspection Team USA headquarters are in Colorado, and Team Canada are based in Calgary and Ottawa. Well not infeasible that a co-ordinator from the teams is based in those respective cities. It seems somewhat strange. Thoughts?

Also if I recall the Moose were based in Toronto, and the New York Ice Pirates regularly expressed interest in travelling to NZ, perhaps it is them?

Anyway given Bettmans reluctance to release NHL players to Olympics I would find it highly irregular that he would release them for some game in NZ. And I doubt many players would want to come in their offseason

Anyway I hope this guy pulls off whatever he is pulling off, but wish there was a little more information about makeup of teams. Just thought I would let you know
He finished by saying he will keep us ALL posted, even though it was only me that emailed. So maybe he thinks two named things are corporations, i.e. Douglas Weber

Bahahahah, that was pretty good I have to admit vince, I got one of those sniggers going you know the trying to stop yourself laughing but failing..

I hope these dry suits stop you smelling?

No doubt its a fantastic idea, a couple of things tho, presumbably the ice berg is not flat, so won’t the puck just keep sliding off the edge?

Are you going to take nets? If someone is a bit wayward with their shot won’t the puck head out to sea?

Back to the slope issue, won’t people have to skate just to keep sliding off the end?
If you are picked up by a japanese whaling vessel? Will keith pay for the flight back from tokyo?
