    http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/sport/ … gear-found

Apparently it is impossible to replace hockey gear in NZ. So much so if one of you 10 players loses his bag, you play a man down to public that paid $100+ to watch.

I know people complain about prices here, but doesn’t mean you can’t find gear

Interesting Article, some of the guys not impressed with NZ, others thinking the sport will never take off in NZ.

Yeah I agree with Vince, the standard of hockey in NZ is severely lagging behind Australia, we are catching up, but there is a long way to go.

1 or 2 teams from NZ would be a start. I mean we struggle to fill 5 teams at this level, let alone 5 at the level above.

Crowds would be the only thing I would imagine we could get if we merged, even then its pretty hard to fill places like dunedin and avondale with the dust they put on the ice every week.

Dunedin has probably had more edge of your seat, overtime games in the last two years than any other rink. Excitement city.

Unfortunately excitement means you lose a point, even if you win.

    Just saying…..

Yeah Queenstown is a shed. You can sit on the tractor sometimes, but you can’t shower.

ChCh Container was awful especially if you were in the far end you were pretty much trapped in there until the guy at the front had finished getting changed….

The whole team can get changed together in Dunedin I believe, and they can shower.

Yeh, I see Thunder picking up at least one in the last weekend.

Although I think Admirals will pick up one more win this season, they have a good team when they turn up. Whether it will be against the Devils or Stampede, I don’t know….

All I know is, that there will be less in-net footage during Red Devils games.

The captains aren’t on good terms??? Did they just break up or something?

Like GP says 100’s of people are at international arrivals everyday, I liked how the Gouche announced them individually. Probably the Indian family waiting for their dad to come back wondered what the hell that guy was on about.

Also 30 players each side? In the photo their is not 60 people, and the team lists they have announced only have 22 players altogether in it.

I would like to hear a report, about Aucklands game. TV1 played up the ESPN angle.

Nice story tv3….Except the Winter games ice hockey is in Dunedin, not Queenstown.

So TV one claimed the games are being covered by ESPN!!! Really? Why would they care?

I like the banter between the TVNZ and TV3 reporters. One trumpeting his exclusive interviews, the other pointing out, that since none of the players represent their country then its no big deal…

We have the NZIHL finals coming up.
The NZ winter games, featuring Australia, NZ, China actual international squads. That have complete teams, and will be playing actual stop clock hockey. The ticket prices are almost a third, and the rivalry are real not contrived.

For the squads, rules, that the promotors have bought over the ticket prices are too expensive, they are more expensive than some of the seats at the upcoming All Black vs Fiji game.

In Dunedin its the same facility, I would say if I lived in Auckland/ChCh i might have gone, since its a bit unique to see Hockey in an Arena in NZ.

Were you there for the fight?  I have no problem with what Jacques did.  He would have happily shook hands and left the ice if the other party had the same intentions.  The Olympic hockey final would have had a fight in the handshake if a goalie was under threat after the game was over.  Was it ridiculous, yes but once it was instigated, what happened after was guaranteed.

I think maybe there are more appropriate responses, then hitting someone in the face with your helmet, and then pounding their head into the ice repeatedly using their dreadlocks.

Some sort of scuffle was to be expected, but probably toned down a notch….

Seems quite weighted towards Team Canada too.

I like how Kerry Goulet is the voice of Ice Hockey. Seeing as no one has ever heard of him. Voice of hockey in Moosejaw maybe?

    Bates Battaglia (35,USA, 580 NHL games) –
Played for USA in World Champs, no Olympics, spent some time in Carolina (was there for playoff run in 01-02),Colorado and Toronto. Consistently in NHL from 98-03, since then has been mainly in AHL, with limited NHL game time.

    Mark Hartigan (33,Canada, 102 NHL games) –
Played for Thrashers, Ducks, Blue Jackets, Red wings. Has two Stanley Cup rings from Red Wings and Ducks, but not on Stanley Cup since didn’t play enough games. Is currently playing in KHL.

Kevin Doell (31,Canada, 8 NHL games) – Played for Thrashers, most of his time spent AHL, currently playing SM-Liga in Finland

Aaron MacKenzie(30,Canada, 5 NHL games)- Played in NHL. Played in Czech league with Hasek, currently playing in Austria.

Cam Paddock (28, Canada, 0 NHL games) –
Never played NHL despite newspaper claims.

Brad Smyth (38, Canada, 88 NHL games) –
Spent time with Panthers, Kings, Rangers, Senators, Predators. Was playing in KHL went unsigned now in EIHL playing with the Belfast giants.

Aaron Miller (39,USA,677 NHL games) –
Played with Nordiques, Avalanche, Kings and Canucks, like Hartigan has Stanley Cup ring but not considered to be part of team that won the Stanley Cup in 95 season. Has been to the Olympics with Team USA though

Derek Armstrong (38, Canada, 477 NHL games)-
Played Islanders, Rangers, and Kings and St Louis Blues, didn’t get a full season on NHL to 02, despite being drafted in 92.

So we are hardly talking the creme de la creme of the NHL, some good journey men, should be decent hockey. Also there Stanley Cup winning claims seem to be tenuous since the players I could find with rings, never played enough to get the name on the Cup.

Hope this helps people who didn’t know who these guys were, are
