Right I am here I am not entirely sure why I have become the Spokesperson, I no longer have a lot to do with the committee, although I hear they miss me seconded everything. So I have no more sway than Chris or Ryan.
All I would have to say is the obligation for clubs to belong to the next level above for representation is a long one with no answers. I mean just look at the IPL/ICL debate the reason NZ crickets can’t play is because the ICC decided on a filter down basis, we sanction the BCCI in India, who in turn have decided to sanction the IPL as there national tournament. So if someone plays ICL, it is not sanctioned by BCCI, so we in turn cannot sanction it, so those players don’t play.
The Ice hockey example DIHA belongs to SIHF, which in turn belongs NZIHF, which in turn belongs to the IIHF. Meaning we are stuck with the costs and rules that are passed on down to us from the top, whether we like it or not, and us being at the bottom of this scheme we end up having to pay a registration that incorporates fees to SIHF and NZIHF which I imagine at some point along the way go to IIHF. This is all well and good, except there is a feeling in Dunedin amongst people that we don’t necessarily see benefits from SIHF or the NZIHF.
And I know this is changing now, with more referees clinics and coaches clinics and clinic clinics. But I guess people who want to just play Ice hockey in the DIHL or something feel that they are subsidizing things that they shouldn’t have too. You say they get referees, they say well we pay the referees, you say they get scorers they say well we pay the scorers. So people are paying twice for a lot of things. And that is what gets jammed up peoples noses.
Who knows, from kyles point of view as club president I can see his desire to have as many members as possible so they can organise more events and activities for the club in general. Which is fair enough. But I don’t necessarily see compulsory membership as the way to achieve this.
Option 1. If Joe Bloggs comes along to play ice hockey, try it out, or just play casually on Wednesday nights, and gets told well you have to sign up for a membership as well you get pony rides, club games etc. The generic response will be, well thanks but I don’t want that I just want to play hockey, so I will leave now with my $120 I was prepared to pay for that alloted games, and never experiences the club and leaves.
Option 2. On the other hand if Joe Bloggs comes along to play DIHL and Kyle says look Joe you could just sign up for DIHL, or if you get a membership as well you get all these added benefits such as being able to watch Ice hockey from the members area or play in Club nights. Mr. Bloggs will ponder this and
A/ Join up straight away because he wants to feel included.
B/ Say no thank you Kyle. But when he plays DIHL he plays alongside club members who have snazzy jackets and decoder rings, he might say hey I am really missing out here, hey Kyle let me in the club.
Personally I like option 2 better. But again compulsory membership is an age old debate.
You can’t doubt that the club does have benefits for belonging to it. But whether or not I should be forced to take those benefits is another question.
Sorry if I wandered off topic, its been a while if so post something to redirect my rant.
Azzy77ModeratorRight here Kyle.
I emailed sky, my annual disappointment about their lack of coverage, and got the stock standard reply we will be showing the Stanley Cup finals series but that is it.
One year I am hanging out for them to say, you know what Aaron we agree we will give you at least 3 games (I am not greedy) a week, plus a new giant plasma screen tv to enjoy them in HD quality and just to one up Wick we will provide Rachael Leigh Cook to be your wife and sports wench to provide you with food and beverage during all games.
One day it will happen
Azzy77ModeratorIs it me or did the cost per team go up?
Azzy77ModeratorIf you go to members>administration it has old constitution.
Haven’t seen my membership card, and I registered on registration night, unlike alot of other people.

In the old DiHL a lot of players were random dudes that rocked up at the start of the season and were only going to be around for 10-12 weeks i.e. students here for one semester or something.
Another example is Matt Newton who is back periodically and is more than willing to pay for DiHL, but if he is forced to pay $100 to play two games of hockey will just say flag that….The point is DiHL is paid for by the players anyway, or it used to be, you paid to hire the gear individually, or fees went to the refs etc. So I don’t see why you need to give another $100 on top for pretty much no reason if you are a drifter. So yes there are reasons why you shouldn’t have to register to play DiHL
"Kyle":unpdlxr1 wrote:it’s not up to the committee to do that at all. The committee doesn’t set the membership fee, it’s set by everyone who turns up to the AGM.[/quote:unpdlxr1]
My point was for the drifter, or the guy that doesn’t want to be involved in the club, they are never going to show up to AGM these are the guys who won’t play DiHL because of high registration fees.
People that turn up to AGM normally are invovled in more than just the DiHL so see the benefit of paying registration for club night etc so aren’t going to grimace too much at $100, and they will play DiHL regardless. So someone at AGM needs to take initive and say hang on guys we are all going to play but last year we had less than the year before why was that, oh i heard people complaining rego was too high. Good point let’s reduce to increase our numbers and therefore make more money."Kyle":unpdlxr1 wrote:Last year there was a belief that because hockey is expensive elsewhere, we should make it expensive here.[/quote:unpdlxr1]
That is the most retarded reason in history. If we can afford to run hockey a bit cheaper here then we should. Just because they can charge a lot of money in Canada or even Canterbury (but I am guessing the arguement came from one or more of the canadians) because the demand is higher, doesn’t mean we should, or even we can get away with it.
We should charge as much for hockey here as it costs us, plus a bit extra to do other things that are beneficial to the hockey community. We can’t just say “hey guys we have a trapped market here, if they don’t pay to play with us, then they can’t play, let’s charge whatever we want”
Azzy77ModeratorYou shouldn’t have to be fully registered to play DiHL……..
Easy. Old days pay 15$ token associate membership then pay to play DiHL.
Semi-old days pay 50 Rego, pay to play DiHL.
These days pay $100 Rego, pay to play DiHL.For DiHL players there has been no added benefits for these extra costs, in fact in the old days there was a big party, prizegiving held with the profits from DiHL, so for increase in spending people are actually getting a lot less.
People that just play DiHL, are normally A/. Uni students who just rock up to play DiHL, or B/.people who want to play Hockey and don’t want to be too involved in Club. So neither these two groups will rock up to AGM for vote on fees.
Its up to the committee to say
“Gee wilkers, we put the fees up people stopped playing, in fact they made it simple for us, by saying exactly that, so if we reduce fees, more people will play so more revenue for everyone, Hooray!! Now let us dance!”April 28, 2009 at 11:27 pm in reply to: Southern League sees Penguins spank Gore and Queens town. #10650Azzy77ModeratorI actually think Tom Wilson Lovers has a good point, why not do it the other way around??
If your peewees are so good they are pounding the other teams, why not send the Kiwi hockey players to play around the region so those competitions are even.
And have your strong Peewee players play intra-club games with themselves so they are even competition and you don’t have to worry about them playing short handed??
And then the best kids can travel to Christchurch. If our peewees are so strong, what happens at midget level? Why the drop off in supremacy? Surely some of our early peewees have gone to this grade, yet at this level the win record is not that flash.
Azzy77ModeratorMaybe Ryan will pick up Vince in a bar!!
That really happened people just watch Ryan try and deny itAzzy77ModeratorWhat about if ryan picks up another canadian goalie in a bar?? like he did two erewhon cups ago??
Azzy77ModeratorI think they have to be registered with NZIHF.
Which seems kind of weird, seeing as its an external tournament isn’t it?
Azzy77ModeratorI am sure as Keith’s number 1 fan Rhys, you will get right in behind old Keith.
Azzy77ModeratorPeople in NZ, and especially south island, have this great habit of making goalies look really good in general.
You shouldn’t need the goalie to tell you were his weaknesses are, just watch him.
Also at least shoot at the holes, so many goalies here can make saves by not moving….and if you are really advanced shoot where the holes are going to be…Azzy77ModeratorI think it was the flashing that really did stefan in…
Azzy77ModeratorI don’t care who justifies what, as long as they learn how to use quotes properly!!!
But fair call by both of you, when you combine your arguments, fundamentally we can’t judge either Thunder or Stampede on the performance of Penguins or Rangers respectively. However it is human nature to speculate….so go nuts based on your opinion of who will make each squad.
Only when Stampede and Thunder meet will we truly know what the teams relative strength against each other is. SIHL is not a good indicator, because
A/ The teams in SIHL are Dunedin, Queenstown and Gore/Alex based, whereas at least theoretically Thunder and Stampede takes a mixture of these players plus imports.
B/ Most weekends only 10 random people turn up for any of the teams, whereas the NZIHL squad consist of at least 22 guys who train together, severely altering the dynamic of the teamsAzzy77ModeratorWell seeing as the Thunder has a squad of about 24 and the penguins had about 10 players, with some SNC guys filling in, meaning there were probably 7 thunder players, I would imagine that the Thunder and Penguin teams are quite different…..
In the first round Rangers had Wilson, Stacey Rout (one former, one current ice black)
I heard yesterday Rangers had Argyle and Speirs??/ Correct me if I am wrong…. -
