Yeah when they did the Aus vs NZ game they had same problem with clocks.

I thought the same as Kyle, seeing as the scorebox in the arena is linked to a controller with a DIN plug of some sort then shouldn’t it be relatively straightforward matter of linking the two? Even if it can’t directly go to the feed can’t the man controlling have a clock with it so he can adjust as necessary?

Also was there communication between scorebox and comm box, so you could get confirmation on penalties and scorers?
We just kludged it a bit down here, and used the rinks wi-fi and just set the scorers and the commentators up with msn messenger, so could quickly and accurately relay assists, and scorers etc….and if there was multiple penalties…work a treat…

Okay so I caught the First period last night.

I thought it looked pretty good.
Net cam was a good addition I haven’t seen in NZ before, although I noticed once that I bit of Ice built up on the lens. But For the most part looked really good.
The number of cameras was awesome it was good to get different angles.
Although I did feel we changed cameras too often sometimes I.E at faceoff’s I got a bit seasick.
But as you said previously it improved throughout, so I have to check out other periods to see this. Same with following the puck I guess, once or twice we would switch either two early or two late.

I thought maybe they could have gone with a more traditional hockey scorebox in a corner. That way giving them room for a PP clock when a team is on PP. Unless I kept mental note of when Penalty was given I didn’t know when players were scheduled to return.

Also when a penalty is called would have been good to get a shot of the referee giving the signal, because the first penalty was a hooking that George called a trip, so would be good to get a visual on the signal.

Otherwise the commentary sounded pretty good I thought, nice wee banter going on between the two commentators.
I do wonder sometimes why people insist on having someone that doesn’t know the sport really well call play-by-play, couple of time Nathan sounded a bit lost, but that’s more from a hockey snobs ears, as far as Joe public is concerned it would have sounded fine.
Also in my personal opinion I like it if both the colour and the Play-by-play know the game well enough each there can be educated debate.
But I guess I also get the play-by-play guy is learning the game with the fans, i.e. asks questions they want to know.

So yeah good Job, its good to get some Sky tv coverage for a change. I thought it looked great, and yeah my criticisms are meant to be constructive, so hopefully they are.

NZIHL summer would kill or severly maim the Southern contingent in NZIHL in my opinion.

Given well over half the Thunder squad are Students, their playing stocks would be severely reduced.
The cost of keeping the Queenstown rink open over the summer is quite expensive and hasn’t been done in a couple of years.
So Dunedin wouldn’t have enough players and Queenstown wouldn’t have ice. I don’t think many of the Queenstown players would be keen on travelling to Dunedin to play/practise, so you would end up with maximum 1 team from Southern, but more likely no teams…..

I understand the want to do, so the top guys are coming out of tough competition into world champs.
If money was no object, I think ideal solution would be for Australian and NZ comps to run as is, and then in the summer months, IB contenders (+extras) form two teams, one from north island and south island, and they play in new trans-tasman comp during the Summer. With the new kiwi teams picked from NZIHL.

The Problem with putting two NZ teams into Australian comp, is I don’t see the Talent pool being able to sustain a viable comp that people would want to watch, if you take out the top 60 players.

    Just my opinions……

I think the problem over the history of Ice Hockey Coverage is the sporadic nature of it. No consistency.

Channel 9 has covered 3 games (Stampede-Admirals, Thunder-Red Devils, Thunder Swarm)
Cue Tv has covered the 2 Australian games
And now we have this new group.

And it would appear to me,  they never talk to each other, so the problems encountered by each when they first cover it , is encountered by them all. (I know for a fact this is the case for first two since I was involved in part with both, just speculating this didn’t happen in the last case although I could be wrong.)
So hopefully if this new group starts to cover multiple games then the knowledge of covering hockey will become consistent…

As far as the bad lighting with light not matching that’s a Botany issue, we had to stop a game for 5 minutes up there this year because the lights kept going out.

The netting is an Auckland/Queenstown issue because CHCH and Dunedin both have full glass.

Although the netting above the glass in Dunedin is a problem encountered by the Cue Tv crew during the internationals due to its height and being unable to lower it enough, making it difficult to get shots close to the northern side of the rink……But if there are regular games being covered I am sure a more permanent solution could be found to this problem.

    What Obscene gesture?

Isn’t he just asking him if he is coming to karaoke after the game?
