Skating at the rink is pretty cheap, and it’s a good rink. The facilities could be a little more comfortable, but the ice itself is magnificent :-)

If you can squeeze any gear into your bags, it might be an idea to bring some. Gear here is quite pricey by international standards, from what I can ascertain.

Hi Marmaduke80, welcome to the forums.

You are absolutely welcome to start playing hockey here. Most hockey here is pretty casual. Currently, casual games are being held on sunday nights, and are suitable for a player of virtually any level (from absolute beginners up to NZIHL players).

Additionally, the Dunedin Ice Hockey League (DIHL) will be starting up at some stage, though I’m not sure when. Kyle did post it at some stage, but it was somewhere between about March and May.

I’m assuming you’re still in England at the moment, so when you get to NZ feel free to stop by again and check out what’s going on.

There’s no need to be nervous about starting up again – you couldn’t possibly be a worse player than me <img decoding=” title=”Cheesy” />

    Regards,
    Chris

[quote:202xk2t6]A single round robin for a 6 team competition takes 5 weeks. A double round robin (each team plays each other twice) takes 10 weeks. Triple would take 15 weeks. Final is one week on top of that, semi-finals another. I have schedules for 4, 6, 8, and 10 team competitions of various lengths which I drew up when I did DIHL stuff.[/quote:202xk2t6]

    err, yes, I just can’t count. How I came up with 7 weeks, I don’t know…

Tom: “Tom loves to play hockey”

Chris (whispering to Kyle): “Why does he always talk about himself in the third person?”

Tom (overhearing): “Who talks about himself in the third person?”

    Chris: “Uhh, you do…”

    Tom: “Oh, him.”

Just to throw some random and entirely unhelpful information into the pot:

At 12 people per team, in an open grade competition, you’d need at least 72 regular players to make a decent round robin. I’m not sure what the numbers were for last year, but that certainly sounds doable.

A 6-team double round robin plus a final would take 7 weeks. Taking every tuesday from may 5th, the final would take place on June 16th. This would allow a gap which would approximately coincide with the Uni mid-year break.

If a second 7-week competition were to take place beginning on the 14th of July, it would finish on August the 25th, approximately coinciding with the Uni mid-semester break.

I’m not sure if a double round robin with six teams would be too short though. Clearly, a triple round-robin of six teams would take ten weeks, taking the end-date for the first competition to the 7th of July. Depending on the proportion of Uni students in the teams, this may cause a lack of interest towards the end of the season as it is in the middle of the break. A second ten-week competition could easily fit into semester 2, should you desire to structure it that way.

Assuming two 7 week competitions with an average of $40 profit per game, you’re looking at $1680 profit total.

Hi Wildcats18, welcome to the forum.

The beginners session is a great place to start, but if you’ve played inline you may not need a lot of what’s taught there.

Currently, casual games are being run on sunday evenings (I believe). These are pretty relaxed, and are organised week to week by Graham Phipps-Black (username “Active”). Not sure what time, sorry, but hopefully GPB will stop by this thread to let you know.

We also usually run a local league (the DIHL) but as of now no final plans have been made for the running of the competition this year. Hopefully by the time you get here that should be sorted out, so keep an eye on these forums.

And to answer your other question: Yes, you’ll be playing with guys :-). Don’t worry, most hockey here is non-checking.

    Cheers,
    Chris

Dave craw wants to help? Cool. He is a good man, and dedicated, so he would be a great organiser.

Can anyone give me the inside word on what’s going on with the DIHL this year?

This would be a really bad year for me to try and organize a whole competition, ’cause it’s my honours year and I’m also starting a new job, but I’m happy to help out when and as I can, probably by taking responsibility for a team like I did with the Bullfrogs a couple of seasons ago.

I’d love to see an open competition this year, with decent sized team rosters and a 6-team comp (if player numbers allow, which they may not), and I’d like to see team managers taking direct responsibility for team jerseys and money collection, thus spreading the load away from the principal organiser.

That’s curious. If I sell my long-lost nigerian relative $100,000, it will unlock $4 Million waiting in a trust account for me!

Nigeria sounds like an awesome place.

There’s not a chance it’s part of the Manuherkia River is there? Pretty unlikely, but it does flow near the rail trail

Just my personal opinion regarding one small issue: The full-season league was a bad idea.

I’m not saying this should have been thought of beforehand, I’m just saying that, having experienced the reality of it, I don’t like it.

I did respond, and I did object. I assumed there was some kind of decision still to be made.

At the start of the year I decided not to do karate in favour of ice hockey (both on wednesday nights). If I knew this was how the DIHL was going to turn out, frankly I wouldn’t have bothered.
