ChrisMemberQ: Why do hockey players wear numbered jerseys?
A: Sometimes dental records aren’t enough to identify the bodies.ChrisMember"thirteen":3i542mxh wrote:in the law of torts, there is a thing called “duty of mitigation” which requires someone who has been suffered a wrong at the hands of another, in your case had water puoured on you by dear old keith, to do all that is reasonable to limit the damage done.
[/quote:3i542mxh]Blake, how did a fucking spastic like you actually know that? By some amazing alignment of the planets, that’s actually 100% correct.
Colour me amazed.
ChrisMemberThis is exactly my point Ryan. That’s why people should get proper mouthguards made. In case you think I’m just making a punt for my dad’s business, let me point out that you can get them made directly at the technician ” title=”Wink” />
(Besides, the money a dentist gets from making moulds for mouthguards wouldn’t even cover the electricity needed to keep the lights running for that length of time – it’s hardly a money spinner)
ChrisMember"Ryan":2xwa4c2z wrote:"thirteen":2xwa4c2z wrote:mouthguards do next to nothing anyway.
[/quote:2xwa4c2z]Apparently that is not true at all. They’re supposedly the best way to prevent head injuries (apart from helmets obviously) according to people I know who have claimed that they’re knowledgeable about such things.
Having said that, I generally avoid wearing them whenever possible as they’re icky, gross and annoying.
[/quote:2xwa4c2z]You’re both right. Commercial mouthguards do virtually nothing, and are barely worth wearing. They’re better than nothing, but they’re icky and gross as Ryan says.
However, a properly made mouthguard which has been constructed by dental technicians specifically for you, and is in excess of 3.5mm in thickness is definitely worth wearing. Such mouthguards aren’t icky or gross, because they conform precisely to the shape of your teeth. Not only to they protect your upper teeth from direct injury by a puck, they prevent hits to the jaw from knocking you out or damaging your neck.
ChrisMember"Active":3io8r7to wrote:Fighting in a game is not about doing damage its about standing your ground, protecting your mana and that of your teamates and not letting others try to own you. In fact you dont even have to fight to to do that you can choose to just be aggressive in holding your ground or by pushing the opponent away from your space. Its about showing you are not intimidated. Its a blimmin game for gods sake, damaging other people is what you get arrested for
[/quote:3io8r7to]Yeah for sure. Sorry, I thought we were talking about fighting in the general sense now.
ChrisMemberBlake’s right about Muay Thai. Much more effective than jujitsu. Unless you’re referring to Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, Ryan? In which case, the arts are no especially comparable. Muay Thai does have grappling incorporated. Personally I would combine western fist boxing with BJJ and western submission wrestling takedowns.
Of course, if you are actually serious about doing damage and can get the security clearance and whatnot then…
ChrisMember"thirteen":yj7bep5b wrote:if chris has done what hes claimed to have done then rhys will get his shit wrecked. i did that stuff for a week and yea well its defnitely not an art like karate, its not even about fighting, its about finishing, and finishing so the other guy is in hospital with about 10 seconds of fighting, if that. i suck at it so dont fight me
[/quote:yj7bep5b]This point has been done to death and I’m not going to belabour a point what has come up in other threads before, but yeah, this is more part of the problem than the solution, and I think we saw why the other night. I had no intention of doing anything at all, but when I was pushed to the edge, my instinct took over, and my instinct has been honed in a particular direction, as Blake said. I certainly don’t feel that the altercation has proven anything to anyone, perhaps the way it might have had I simply punched the miscreant’s lights out. While not good, at least that would have been expected.
So, you may as well all know that this incident has me seriously considering whether or not I should be playing hockey at all. The fact of the matter is that Rhys came very close to “getting his shit wrecked” as Blake so eloquently put it, and that’s not what anyone signs up for when they come to play a game of hockey.

[/quote:qo2df8jd]They haven’t been. They are in the split thread.
ChrisMemberSubsequent discussion about fighting in general, and specifically in the DIHL 2009 has been moved to this thread[/url:1t1zuvl1].
