Incase anyone’s interested, here’s a very crude mock-up of what the stats will look like. Feel free to recommend changes ” title=”Smiley” />

Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberThe worlds crudest mock up of what will be shown on screen for the stats program:
[url:v64qk6dz]http://www.dunedinicehockey.co.nz/temp/StatsProgramDraftInterface.doc[/url:v64qk6dz]Please let me know if you have any suggestions/potential improvements. The basic design is fairly similar to that of the software used at http://www.sncicehockey.com/.

If there was an easy way to split it into three, yes, I’d go that way.[/quote:1xjtee8h]I hadn’t thought of using boards to split the ice up, I forgot the rink had those. Where the heck are they though? I don’t think I’ve ever seen them before.
I was assuming we’d just tell the players the edge of their rink was at the blue line, but yeah, boards would be great so maybe 2 rinks is the way to go.
I really don’t like the idea of refs, it ads a whole extra complication to things which is one of my main reasons for floating this concept originally, maximum hockey, negligible organization required ” title=”Smiley” />
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberOkay, the link I sent Kyle ages back was [url:zftkow3o]http://www.worldpondhockey.com/[/url:zftkow3o]. The world champs are held every year in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, Canada. They’re very popular. Apparently a few people in NZ were talking about fielding a team a while back but I haven’t heard anything since. Anyone wanna start a new organisation called the “New Zealand Pond Hockey Association”? Then we can form a teams with cool names, like the “Pond Blacks” and the “Pond Fernz” ” title=”Tongue” />
Their website has gotten crappy since I looked at it last though and they’ve taken the rules of their main pages!? Anyhows, there’s some of them hidden in the registration form here: [url:zftkow3o]http://login.mybusinessadmin.com/noauth/download.php?id=7143[/url:zftkow3o]
[b:zftkow3o]Basically the deal is:[/b:zftkow3o]
4 on 4 hockey
Standard width goal but only 25 cm high.
Totally non-contact
Not allowed to lift the puck above the 25 cm height of the goal.
Since no contact is allowed protective equipment is not compulsory, although it’s probably a good idea.
No referees, all games self regulated.
There are no faceoffs during the games.
Faceoffs are replaced by one team starting with the puck while the oposing team is on their side of halfway.
The team which starts with the puck is decided in the following way:
Game start – coin toss to decide
Goal scored – scoring team has to leave the puck with their oposing team and ‘tag up’ to their own half, game restarts as soon as they ‘tag up’.
Puck out of bounds – the team which didn’t hit the puck out of bounds starts with the puck (teams have to start back in their own halves).
Second half start – team which is losing starts with the puck.
Rinks measure 21.33 x 45.72 m.
Games consist of 2 x 15 minute halves (30 minute games).
No off-sides, icings or any of that other crap.[b:zftkow3o]Important points: [/b:zftkow3o]
[u:zftkow3o]Non-contact[/u:zftkow3o] – not non-checking, but actually no contact, kinda like field hockey. Players can still lift each others sticks, but that’s about it.
[u:zftkow3o]4 on 4[/u:zftkow3o] – this literally means 4 on 4. No substitutions allowed.I’d be particularly keen to see us stick to the World Pond Hockey Championships rules as much as possible, as it gives an aura of seriousness about it, whereas otherwise you’d be saying “well it’s kinda like how they play pond hockey overseas, but we’ve fudged the rules a bit for our own purposes”. Plus the Canadians should know a thing or two about pond hockey and have the rules pretty well sussed already.
Our rinks would need to be smaller than theirs unfortunately though, 30×30 m (two at once) or 30×20 m (three at once).
Personally I’d rather go for three rinks as it would cut costs. However the advantage of having square (30×30 m) rinks is that it allows for setting up some quite funky plays, it would be very much like inline hockey but with a goal on the half-way line. Rectangular rinks don’t give as many options for passing as square rinks.[quote:zftkow3o]but only do a wet groom a couple of times during the day, to try and recreate the pond effect.[/quote:zftkow3o]
Lol, I dunno about “recreating the pond effect”! The surface is the worst thing about pond hockey, so I’d rather not replicate it! I played on some rather shocking outdoor rinks in Calgary and I wouldn’t recommend it. Snow is not a good thing when it comes to playing hockey ” title=”Tongue” />
[quote:zftkow3o]think we’d probably need to have a referee each game, but maybe not.[/quote:zftkow3o]
Not much point really, teams should be able to ref themselves.
[quote:zftkow3o]24 hour game of hockey. It’d run as 24 sequential games, just rope teams in and they pay their money, play three games (or more) during the 24 hour period.[/quote:zftkow3o]
Nice idea, I think if there were drop in times for anyone to turn up and play would be a good idea too. If it was advertised on the radio and what not it would be a good chance to introduce some newbies to the sport. It would be interesting seeing how many people you could to turn up at 3:30am though! I suspect numbers may run a little lean around then!
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberOh, I meant to reply to this, I guess I forgot. I’ll reply back later on.
Some good ideas though.imported_RyanMemberProbably my bad, I’ve been copying and pasting from Word docs that Joyce sends me. I’m guessing I forgot to copy and paste the most recent totals column, I’ll fix it tonight.
Ryan,imported_RyanMemberHi,
AFAIK there’s no such thing as a 2nd hand hockey store in New Zealand. I don’t have any shorts for sale at the moment but I do have a pair of shoulder pads for sale.CCM 652 Shoulder pads, size large.
Price $40. They were ~$200 brand new.I have no idea how much the postage would be to Auckland but you’d need to pay that as well, I’m happy to send them anyhow you want.

cheers,
Ryanimported_RyanMemberAnother point. I’m assuming this feature would come by default, but just incase. It would be good to include the ability to add stats for previous seasons/years. We still have the stats back to DIHL 2005, so we could add those as well. It would be particularly nice so people could see their career stats over the last few years, not just the ones from the seasons which have run since the new program was launched. Might take me a whole lot of number punching but it shouldn’t be too bad. Particularly since all the stats would be automatically calculated.
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberI have a request ” title=”Smiley” /> This is apparently possible, but I’m not sure how difficult is to implement.
It would be great to be able to output the stats, schedules, team rosters etc. directly to PDF so that they could be sent as emails, printed easily etc.
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberPhil PJ and Mark Hareb haven’t registered. Phil was asked (along with the rest of the committee) to let me know if they want access and he didn’t reply.
I’ll give him access though, will do that tonight. Plus will add Paul Roth too.
Off-topic, there are some posts going in here which don’t really need to be secret. That’s why you’ll see that Chris’s stats topic got moved into the main forum, who knows, there may be another hockey playing mega uber computer geek out there who can help!
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberLooks like I need to go learn something about databasing ” title=”Sad” /> I’m totally lost with all this SQL stuff.
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberHere’s some attempts by me:
[img:1k2l6iig]http://www.dunedinicehockey.co.nz/ryan/chrislaingmangledByRyan1.jpg[/img:1k2l6iig]
I think this makes him look a little too drag queenish ops:[img:1k2l6iig]http://www.dunedinicehockey.co.nz/ryan/chrislaingmangledByRyan2.jpg[/img:1k2l6iig]
That’s better ” title=”Smiley” />imported_RyanMemberThis was sent to me by Rob Owens:

Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberSounds promising ” title=”Smiley” />
Um, now to explain exactly what it is we need.
Well obviously there needs to be a login function for the statisticians to enter their data, an htaccess protected folder would do for that I guess.
Then the stats would need to be calculated as per this type of thing:
http://www.dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi/docum … tats06.pdfBut on top of that, it’d be great to be able to click on a player and see their exact stats for each game.
And be able to click on each team and see the exact stats for each game of their season.
Also, some way to rank players and teams automatically based on number of goals, penalty minutes, assists etc. etc.
Preferably set it up to either be easily skinnable by me, or with a nice CSS based design with no extraneous code turfed in there. We could iron any bugs in the display side of things later I guess though, the actually programming is the tricky bit!
There’s a bunch more things we’ll want too, but I can’t think of them right now and I’ve got to go ….
imported_RyanMemberThe move is over! If you find any bugs which have cropped up during the transfer please let me know.
thanks,
Ryan -
