I forgot to add, the stats were generally posted the morning after the last game of the week last season.
imported_RyanMemberI was looking at getting hold of the software used here from Nick Lynn (who runs the site):
[url:1s1scxl7]http://www.sncicehockey.com/?opt=schedule[/url:1s1scxl7]It can be purchased here [url:1s1scxl7]http://www.TheHockeyStop.com[/url:1s1scxl7] but it’s US$100 I think and it’s GPL anyway so no point paying for the damn thing. Plus it apparently has a few bugs in it, like you can’t make corrections afterwards – well you could probably change the database directly but that’s no good for anyone but me who has direct access to it, plus it’s a pain the ass. Nick hasn’t sent me the software yet.
In principle we should be able to create something ourselves but I’m definitely not knowledgeable enough for that. The computer tech guy at the university chemistry department offered to make one, but he’s given up as he got bored of it.
Do you reckon you could make something similar Mike? There’d be quite a bit of database work to make it work. I suspect if you made it you could probably make a few bucks off it too as all the software for this purpose is either crap, or mega expensive. That one above is the cheapest I’ve seen so far but it certainly isn’t perfect. It requires safe mode to be off – apparently this is a bad thing.
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberGot it this time ” title=”Smiley” />

[quote:3nvc81z8]Ryan,
I have some new contacts from the DIHL B grade. Do you want these now, or do you want to wait until I can add new A grade people as well.
Cheers,

Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberWhat’s with Mark forgetting about everyone?
And shame on you for doubting our team Kyle! We are going to go kick some ass! Although we are off to a rocky start as I don’t have contact details for most of our team so we can’t sort out our battle plan yet. Perhaps we should be given a 5 point advantage to compensate for our unintended lack of planning ” title=”Tongue” />
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberHi Eric,
I got your first email but not the second one you said you’d send at the weekend.Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberThere are plans for more practices though and Sunday seems like a good time for them. But I’m not involved with the practice scheduling so perhaps they’ve got that sorted already.
imported_RyanMemberI thought the club would keep the early ice time free for practices.
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberHoly crap! You are a fast learner!
Is that your own design, or did you pinch it from some where? It looks very professional, so kudos to you if it’s your own design. You should also change “Web site contents” to “Web site contents and design” so people know it’s your design and not just your content. You could just add a generic copyright tag like I’ve stuck in this site, but since it’s your own site you may as well take credit for it ” title=”Smiley” />
The lightbox method I was recommending last time was the Javascript one. I’ll post back another day with a quick explanation of how to get it to work. The CSS one is no good, you don’t want that at all as you (AFAIK) need to download all the images on loading the page, which takes forever. The Javascript one just nicely pops out a graceful looking pop over image – it still works without Javascript on but it opens the image as a link, rather than as a pop over.
The colour changing buttons don’t seem to load the heading for some reason.
You have an H1 and a bunch of H4s. The mega geeks tell me that you should really have a series of them, ie: if you have an H1 and an H3, then you need to have an H2 as well. There’s a bunch of reasons, most obvious is that logically if you have an H1 heading then you would naturally expect that an H2 would follow, then an H3 etc. There’s possibly also advantages with SEO (search engine optimisation) but I suspect it doesn’t make a lick of difference – but best be on the safe side none the less.
Some mouseovers on those colour changing buttons would be nice.
You’ve got the forum working ” title=”Smiley” /> Now lets see you integrate it into your site, menu and all! Not an easy task I suspect. The DIHA forum was much easier as I could just chuck the forum inside the main content box of the website, but in your case that may look a little silly as your main content box is quite small. Messing round with forum themes is a bit nightmarish sometimes too, although SMF is supposedly not too bad – I haven’t tried it before though.
[code:2zab3am2]<style>@import”style.css”;</style>
<link>[/code:2zab3am2]Why not add the style.css file the same way as blue.css? @import is an old hack for really old browsers which you don’t need to worry about any more. There’s some info. about it here [url:2zab3am2]http://css-discuss.incutio.com/?page=ImportHack[/url:2zab3am2].
Other than that … nice code ” title=”Smiley” /> Damn good work ” title=”Smiley” />
If you go check the code in many (most?) professionally designed sites and you’ll see that they’re considerably worse than your own.
cheers,
Ryanimported_RyanMemberAssuming there’s no changes from the team registration process from last year, you wont need to register as an individual. Mark will be doing that.
He’ll be getting you to fill in the forms at some stage and the team will pay a flatrate rather than on a per player basis.
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberLate reply, but my five cents worth anyway. More of a holistic/trying to develop things ready for the future type of approach rather than waiting for numbers to increase to the point where a league is necessary. Start small, work towards something bigger yadayada.
"Kyle":uagjpakj wrote:There were 13 peewees at practise on Tuesday, including my son (very exciting!). They’ll get some more registrations and some kiwihockey kids, so I suspect they’ll make it up to two teams. So they’ll be playing a semi-regular game Saturday 5:30.[/quote:uagjpakj]I suspect if there was a league and more promotion going on, the peewees would jump in numbers. You only need 3 teams to call something a league so I don’t see any issue with it.
"Kyle":uagjpakj wrote:Midgets I can’t imagine are any better, but they might be able to pull in some high school kids who aren’t playing for the Association. They’re playing a game Saturday 6:30.[/quote:uagjpakj]If the club can create an aura of superiority about the DIHA league over the high schools league, I think a fleet of players could be recruited into a midgets league. A structure in which all players can compete in the schools league but only the best get into the midgets league and then the best from the midgets league get to play in the SIHL league and then the best from the SIHL league go play in the SIHL team at Nationals and then the best from Nationals go play for NZ, bla bla bla. Should be good for 6 good teams IMO. It would require someone driving it from the ground up though and I suspect no one will volunteer – or at least no one capable of it will.
A Junior league could also be an option, but it might be hard getting the numbers together as many of them will prefer to play seniors instead.
I don’t think the paper work involved in forming a league would be terribly complicated, essentially all that is required is a rego form and an event notice. A few modifications to the rule book could make things less complicated if necessary.
"Kyle":uagjpakj wrote:Women are struggling to make 1 team. And if they took every woman playing hockey and put them out there for a game, they might squeeze up to two teams, [/quote:uagjpakj]Not true IMO, there’s plenty of female players, there’s just no one there to pool them all together and get them organised. As Phil PJ would put it, t’s kind of like a chicken and egg scenario, if they don’t form a womens league, they wont get enough players for the league. Might as well scrimp the barrel for a start and get some sort of competition up and running. The women told me a few years ago that there wasn’t enough players for one team in Dunedin and they were struggling to get players even for tournaments held in Dunedin. So I ran that one off tournament between the Dunedin women plus a few more players I gave them and the Dunedin Aces women and then had a half female, half male team as the third one. There are a lot more female hockey players in Dunedin now than there was back then. Practises at the Big Chill were struggling to get even 5 players. DIHL has less female players too I think and there was far less female players in the schools league. Again though, it needs someone to drive it forward and I suspect no one can be bothered.
"Kyle":uagjpakj wrote:but the difference between some of the beginners they’d have to throw on, and Zanzee and Megan etc. [/quote:uagjpakj]Same problem in ChCh, but it seems to work and their league is very popular, well, they have four teams at least. Many of their top female players still compete despite it being quite easy for them.
"Kyle":uagjpakj wrote:I’d be keen to see the women entering as a B grade team, and maybe an allowance for Zanzee to play down or something to help them out. [/quote:uagjpakj]Yeah, would be nice if they’d do that. Perhaps the DIHL should have an option on the rego form for joining an all female team? If they can’t do it themselves then organise it for them?
"Kyle":uagjpakj wrote:I presume by SNC you mean DIHL? C grade isn’t confirmed, but if we get 8 B teams we’ll go for it. [/quote:uagjpakj]"Kyle":uagjpakj wrote:Contact… worth exploring, but there’s issues we both know about.[/quote:uagjpakj]Chicken and egg situation again IMO. Players wont learn to play contact unless they get the chance! Start small, work towards something bigger.
imported_RyanMemberI’ll second that, intermediate session kicked butt. My first attempt at playing since busting my leg last year and it all went fine ” title=”Smiley” /> Leg did bung up a bit at the end, but hopefully I’ll manage the whole session next week ” title=”Smiley” />
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberI can’t make it tonight as I’m wheeling and dealing with some mega science nerds. But it would be great if someone could go along and help Kyle as this is a seriously good opportunity to help the club out as it will bring a lot of funding back to the club eventually.
imported_RyanMember"Kyle":1grnp8nt wrote:Yeah. It’d be an interesting experiment anyway. Probably wouldn’t work very well from the stands on the side of the rink as they start at ground level and therefore wouldn’t have a great angle on a picture flat on the ice.[/quote:1grnp8nt]I was meaning project it from the grandstand at the side anyway, as most of the spectators are usually there.
Ryan,
imported_RyanMemberIf you projected it from the grandstand, the people in that grandstand wouldn’t see any distortion.
