Random. I was always under the impression that those rinks were struggling financially, and now they’re investing over $1,000,000 into one of them!?

This is a question, not a criticism:

Why does the equipment costs hundreds of thousands of dollars? I can understand cameras being expensive, but I assumed the equipment to flip between cameras, relay signals etc. would be quite cheap. A simple switch which flicked between cameras and a laptop with live video editing software and an audio feed from the commentators going into it is all I thought you’d need (apart from the cameras and cables to get the feeds back to the computer).

I’d looked into this in the past for setting up live footage of our in-house games in Dunedin, and the only complication I had was the lack of sufficient video cameras and enough cable to get a video feed back to the processing computer.

If it’s simply a drop in quality due to some issue I don’t know of, would my method still be acceptable for a basic online feed of the game if we were to set something like that up in the future?

I would ideally like to have static web-cam style cameras dotted around the rink and feed the data back to the computer via WiFi, but last I checked that sort of thing was out of our budget, but it may not be now or in the near future perhaps. If semi-crap cameras were available for $100 a pop with built in WiFi functionality, we could have 4-5 of them setup permanently and all you would need to do to setup a live feed is to turn a computer on, beginning streaming to the web and flip between cameras when required and BOOM, you have live coverage of the games online If there was someone around who felt like commenting then you could have that laid in on top too, although I suspect that might be a bit painful to listen to unless there was someone good at doing it on hand at the time so I’d guess most games would be commentator-less.

That looks like the best footage I’ve seen of hockey in New Zealand yet.

I think Vince was suggesting having the volunteers there as experts to advise the professionals rather than replacing them.

What sort of format do you want the scores in? I’ve been meaning to write a program to handle the scoring side of things for a while now but never find the time to do it. But a very simple system to transfer scores from the scorebox to the TV would be fairly simple so long as you don’t mind relying on a 3G/WiFi connection to make it work.

If the sport is that small there, then I suspect they’re probably not going to be able to put together a whole team to travel to NZ for an oldies tournament.

Travelling to them seems more viable than the other way around. It would be an awesome trip for them if they did come. They could do a full round trip …. Christchurch -> Tekapo -> Naseby -> Alexandra -> Queenstown -> Gore -> Dunedin. That would be a great way to see the country whilst enjoying some hockey enroute.

There are nets, but they’re a pain in the neck to transport unfortunately, plus I think cones, a rubbish bin or anything similar is more appropriate since you presumably won’t have any goalies and a full sized hockey goal is a bit big without them. I have a mini-net kicking around in my room somewhere that can be used, but I only have one of them.

Kavanagh College gets my vote for best place to play. The surface is okay (for crappy asphalt) and there’s plenty of room and a total surrounding of nets.

George St Junior schools is a better location, but the court area there has shrunk quite a bit over the years and you are far more likely to hit a passing car with a puck when playing there and the walls are solid rock.

I’ll definitely turn up if something is organised

Someone should take a team over there from here to play against them.

As long as he doesn’t take him up on the offer whilst on the ice I see no reason for a penalty.

I assumed that was more through team work than raw talent though. I thought individually there would have been more skill in the south than the north.

Lots of Aucklanders in there.

I’m picking the south. That’s a heck of a good lineup there.

Killer Keas beat Sharks 3 – 1
Bullfrogs beat Penguins 3 – 0
Richard Craniums beat Ducks 9 – 3

Goal of the night must go to Xavier Wood who deked pretty much the entire Ducks team, then put the puck top shelf on a back hand.
