Hockey action on the Manorburn dam on Sunday morning:

If I can find a similarly good quality chunk of ice this weekend I’ll try it then.
imported_RyanMemberMy helmet cam found a new use as an under ice video camera on the weekend. Thanks to Dave Young for the idea, strapping the camera to his pole and editing the clip. The guy in yellow is Dunedin referee and SlapShot member Dave Patchett and the second guy is Dave Young from Outram. Also starring, but not seen up close is yours truly and Alan Knowles.

imported_RyanMemberPredictions are futile.
imported_RyanMemberSome photos taken by me on Saturday at Poolburn dam.
There’s occasional watery patches at the very edges of some of the rock formations like the one below so best to avoid sending the puck too close to them in case it falls in.

Plus good ice at Manorburn and Idaburn dams as well. We also skated on some utterly shit ice at St Bathans (not recommended).
From left: Me (Ryan Hellyer), Dave Patchett and Wellingtonian Alan Knowles. Thanks to Dave Young for the photo … http://chipofftheiceblock.blogspot.com/ … d-ice.html

[quote:3gmxzciy]If you have nothing planned for the weekend and want to do lots of skating, Glen and Kush are organising a trip south this weekend (3rd 4th July) searching for Natural Ice, for those of you who haven?t seen the News, Central Otago have had a hoar frost for the last 6 days, it started clearing today.
Ted has a van and there are some seats available, they will be leaving ? Very Early? this Saturday morning and returning Sunday evening, your costs will be: travel, your food and accommodation, the plan is to head down to Alexandra find some accommodation and the look for ice from there. If you are interested in going contact Glen on Hm: 03 3664833 or Mobile: 021 1146050.[/quote:3gmxzciy]imported_RyanMemberI’ve added a link to the official stats XLS file in the first post.
imported_RyanMemberThanks Jamrock. I didn’t realise that was a link to the full stats.
Here’s a direct download link for it:

[/quote:2slpd5nc]I don’t think the IIHF rule book ever had the two lice pass rule did it? I think that was just an NHL rule.
imported_RyanMemberI suspect the problem is with finding appropriate volunteers to do the job. Some people just plain suck at writing and others simply aren’t willing to spare their free time to chase up information just to write up articles about events.
I think making the raw stats available might help a little as you could at least use that to get an accurate idea of what’s going on. I used to do that a lot with the Dunedin Ice Hockey League reports if I didn’t attend the game. You can take a pretty good guess as to what happened if you have the official game stats and a few tidbits of information from spectators about what happened. Reports from those who attended would be a lot better, but that’s not always possible.

I know of two teams from Dunedin. I’m not sure what the team names are, but I know that one of them is made of old-timers players.
imported_RyanMemberThat would be a very boring promo video. We all know goalies just stand in the goal and flail around a bit when the puck comes near. Backup goalies do exactly the same, except they’re on the bench instead of the ice.
The real action is in the gumby adult leagues. The biggest hits and most exciting action is in the lower ranks. Where else can you see two people who can barely skate, line each other up, and then see the horror on their faces when they realise neither of them can stop or turn and then slam into each other in a bone crunching thump on the ice. The NZIHL has nothing on that. We even get spectacular wipe-outs with no one near the player at the time! Blue line – boomf! Ok, Kyle does that often too, but he’s the ref/linesman so it doesn’t count. Yes, gumby adult hockey is where the real action is.

You could just run out of the changing room holding the camera at head height.
