Wow, that’s pretty awesome.
I wonder if they’ll have Steve Jackson back for the commentating job. He did a pretty good job last time.

[/quote:1cj12mlb]Maybe I should have trialled then. I fit the bill perfectly!

Any games would be after their season has closed and they generally are gone.[/quote:10apz6iz]If it were a big enough event then I’d have thought they’d be happy to come over during the middle of their season (which could change to accommodate it), then the import issue would be avoided.

The world champs. has all sorts of requirements which need to be met. A non-world championship event would (I assume – but could be entirely wrong) not.
A division 2 world championships round would definitely be cool though. The division 3 event seemed to be popular enough and the DIHA would likely be more organised the second time around so I’d expect an even better turnout of spectators for another event.
The womens world championships would be nice to have here too, but apparently it’s harder to cover the costs for that due to the IIHF not providing as much funding as for the mens event.
imported_RyanMemberI guess it’s a bit far for them to go too I spose.
I originally had this idea around the Easton Cup, but that idea was dead in the water due to them not being allowed to play against non-national teams apparently.
imported_RyanMember"vpatrol":18to0cor wrote:What value is it to host a tourney for teams like that then? Especially if NZ has no involvement in it?[/quote:18to0cor]Well if NZ wasn’t involved, then no, that would be weird. I was suggesting everyone is involved. Just split it into divisions.
Of course there would be a risk not enough teams turn up, and it’s possible the IIHF has a bunch of annoying rules we’d need to follow to run a tournament like that. I know the world champs. had all sorts of requirements, such as crazy numbers of stat counters and officials and if they were needed for a non-world champ event then it would probably be best not to run it as it would stretch our volunteer resources too far I’d think.

"Kyle":29g8xzyk wrote:Secondly, there’s no value bringing countries that are outside of the rankings system here to NZ for something that is about the same level as premier club hockey. It’d be like $30K a team in flights and accommodation. That’s a lot of money that no one has for no additional value to NZ ice hockey. Some of these countries don’t even have proper gear for all their players. Most of those teams already play in a tier two tournament in Asia. Paying for them to come play it again against the same teams that they play in Asia (that we’ve also paid to bring here) makes no sense.
[/quote:29g8xzyk]I never suggested anyone pay for them to come here, that would be stupid.
I just suggested holding an international tournament they could compete in.
It would work a lot better if they could compete against local teams too, but apparently that’s not allowed by the NZIHF. They’d need to compete as a non-national team to do that.
imported_RyanMemberI never suggested the Indian national team come here to play New Zealand, that would be a waste of their time.
imported_RyanMemberTwo divisions dummy ” title=”Tongue” />
imported_RyanMemberImagine how cool it would be to see teams like this Indian one plucking up the courage to head our direction for a tournament:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDccXLj84mgimported_RyanMemberI just added Chile to the list (who aren’t even IIHF registered which [b:av69uzrc]would[/b:av69uzrc] be a problem).
imported_RyanMember"Kyle":2v819y23 wrote:You wouldn’t want to choose non IIHF ranked countries.[/quote:2v819y23]I would have thought the exact opposite. I thought it would be an ideal chance for them to compete at a higher level.

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of hockey-playing countries which would fit the bill for Asia-pacific or a Pacific-rim hockey tournament:

Chile
India
Pakistan
Nepal
Phillipines

It’s the U16’s I’d be aiming at as they’re not old enough to play in the NZIHL at that point yet are still the breeding ground for future Ice Blacks.
imported_RyanMemberFinal rankings here:
http://stats.iihf.com/Hydra/227/IHM2270 … NG_1_0.pdfI can’t believe they got 4th. That’s totally crazy, I assumed they’d get thumped again … shows what I know ” title=”Tongue” />
