Lol, that was one of the worst examples of hockey in the history of the sport (in Dunedin). Basically the whole of both teams were in an all outright brawl bar a few of them (who incidentally happened to be the top players).

So not a fair comparison IMO.

Plus, wasn’t that the schools league? The schools league is administered by the Otago Secondary Schools Sports Association, not the DIHA so the disciplinary system are different.

Ah, you are referring to the IIHF visor rule which is not applicable in New Zealand as visors are compulsory across the board here. I was referring to the full face protection rule which is set to 18 and applies in NZ too.

I think the IIHF rule says if a player is born before 1974 they don’t need to wear a visor.

EDIT: Some clubs in NZ ignore NZIHF regulations and use IIHF rules instead. I know the CIHA used to do this, not sure if they still do or not.

I don’t think you read the quote I posted above correctly. It says that properly fitted mouthguards don’t help prevent concussions, just jaw and tooth injuries, most of which are avoided with a cage anyway.

I had a good Google around and that was the best data I could find. There were a few other pages I found with similar’ish types of data, but again, they didn’t seem to find any conclusive evidence that mouth guards noticeably reduce concussion rates.

Yeah, the IIHF equipment rules are totally screwed. God knows what planet the nutters were on when they came up with some of them. Perhaps some of the rules were added over time due to political pressure and so they’ve turned into the weird concoction of regulations we have now?

They make Juniors wear a neck guard, but yet there is no requirement to wear shin guards, so go figure!

When Kyle and I were writing the DIHA rule book we added in a bunch of extra stuff including compulsory shin guards, elbow pads etc. etc. None of it really matters as you need to be an idiot not to wear that stuff anyway.

Yeah and if you are over a certain age you are deemed  ugly enough  not  to have to wear any face protection and you can smash up your face if you want to, cause your’e not much good for procreation anyway.
Theres so many advantages to being older.

So for males under 18 it’s okay to procreate and after that you shouldn’t?

According to Kyle, no one has been punished for the fights that broke out last week.

Any ideas on how that works? I always thought that fighting was banned, therefore anyone who was caught doing it was automatically ejected from the league. Or have I misunderstood something in the rules?

    Rhys I assume.

    EDIT: Oops, sorry Rhys  :-X

Heh, I was about to go find some evidence to say you are wrong. However most of the reports I found suggest there is a negligible decrease in concussion rates amongst mouthguard wearers:

A 2002 prospective study recorded dental injuries and concussions among 50 men’s Division I college basketball teams during one competitive season, then compared injury rates between mouthguard users and nonusers. The authors found:

?There were no significant differences between mouthguard users and nonusers in rates of concussions (0.35 vs 0.55) or oral soft tissue injuries (0.69 vs 1.06). Mouthguard users had significantly lower rates of dental injuries (0.12 vs 0.67; P < 0.05) and dentist referrals (0.00 vs 0.72; P < 0.05) than nonusers. Custom-fitted mouthguards do not significantly affect rates of concussions or oral soft tissue injuries, but can significantly reduce the morbidity and expense resulting from dental injuries in men's Division I college basketball.?
There is also a 2001 review (4) asks whether mouth guards prevent concussion. The author suggests:

?Although many authors claim that mouthguards offer an effective means of preventing concussion and spinal injuries, the evidence for this statement is limited.?[/quote:p6tjxcvg]

[size=1:2oj6ap3q]My attempts to talk down my own team have failed, so here’s another tact …[/size:2oj6ap3q]

First up on Tuesday at 7pm are the mighty Bullfrogs vs the Chiefs battling out for the chance to win a medal in the Dunedin Ice Hockey League B-grade finals.

The Bullfrogs have a perfect record of 0 – 6 for the season, hot off a narrow 2 – 3 score against the Superfly team last week they are easy favourites to win.

The Bullfrogs have their regular star studded lineup including superstar imports Jaydee Cabral on defense and powerforward Bret Dougherty from the natural home of ice sports, sunny California. Media personality Anna Craw will be suiting up on defense along with local limpet Ryan Hellyer. The aggressive Walter von Ballmoos has flown in from South Africa to bolster the forward lineup with some hard hitting muscle along with David Richards and Auckland import Sarah Ward. Kara Ross has a perfect 0 – 5 record for the season and will be hard to beat during this final game of the season. We’d normally expect to see some blinding saves, but it’s highly unlikely Kara will be facing many shots.

The Chiefs are about to be dealt a serious ass whooping. My pick: 10 – 2. Six goals from Bret Dougherty via rebounds, two from yours truly via wrist shots from the point, one via a snapshot from the slot from Sarah Ward and one from Kara Ross via a wrist shot from the goal line. Sonja Woods and Paul Roth to score for the Chiefs from rebounds via shots from the point.

The Chiefs better have well padded pants as they’re about to get bent over and spanked with a big fat wooden spoon on Tuesday!

In the other B-grade on Wednesday between the Midgets and Superfly, the midgets will trounce the Superfly 4 – 0. Three goals from breakaways, one from a nice pass across the slot and sunk into the net by Nick Patchett.

PS: Someone needs to do picks for the A-grade. I’m not following it closely enough to know what’s going on.

Apparently that is not true at all. They’re supposedly the best way to prevent head injuries (apart from helmets obviously) according to people I know who have claimed that they’re knowledgeable about such things.

Having said that, I generally avoid wearing them whenever possible as they’re icky, gross and annoying. I’d normally not wear shoulder pads for non-checking hockey either except I dislocated my shoulder about 20x so figured I should probably stay on the safe side.    …. you would think my experience with not wearing safety equipment for my shoulder would encourage me to follow the advice about mouth guards, but apparently not! Hopefully my brain doesn’t get mooshed <img decoding=” title=”Tongue” />

this would involve the nzihl not using the iihf rules, which is a pretty big change. even if the players wanted it I doubt the referees would agree to do it.

I doubt the players or referees would have any say in it.
The NZIHF tends to be stricter than international rules, not more relaxed, particular where safety is concerned ie: compulsory mouthguards etc.

AGM’s are not much use for getting stuff done. They’re just for setting annual stuff like fees, structures etc. Hard to know where you went wrong without knowing the details.

To answer your question, no, I haven’t been to an SIHL AGM. I could imagine the experience being rather painful though.

    My response would be identical:

    "Kyle":1cqc575n wrote:
I can counter that by saying, I’m a player of ice hockey, and I get a bunch of stuff that I want to happen through the DIHA, SIHL etc. Not everything, but that’s fair enough.[/quote:1cqc575n]

There aren’t enough players organising stuff simply because there aren’t enough who are willing to. So instead it is left to parents of hockey players to take over the administration duties.

The sport is small enough that you can easily make very large changes to the way things are done without much hassle. if you are organised and have a coherent argument for why things should be changed then I can’t see why you would have any troubles.

in reply to: Fighting in the NZIHL #14655

I’ve heard that myth and never understood it since I couldn’t find it anywhere in the NZIHL rules (or constitution or whatever that big document they have is called).

I assumed there was some document I didn’t have access to which had it in it.
