They need a system so that people can post their reports directly to the site. Trusted users could post directly and others could be put into a moderation queue waiting for checking by someone before posting.

One of the most convenient ways to do it is to setup a site on http://wordpress.com/ which has all of these features available by default. The NZIHL could avoid bothering to run their own site and let WordPress.com do it for them. WordPress.com is usually used as a free service, but there are a bunch of paid upgrades available which allow all advertising to be removed and you can use your own domain name and modify the look of the site.

I’m contemplating converting http://dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi/ over to it in the future as it’s a lot less hassle than mucking around setting up your own web hosting account, upgrading software etc. etc.

One catch with having live TV coverage is that I’m quite tempted not to even bother turning up at the rink. The novelty of watching the game live on TV is very tempting. I wonder if it will hurt tickets sales or boost them from the extra advertising?

[quote:2c326jy0]The structure will hold to have 2 or three teams in a grade. Two teams is easy, obviously. Three teams – because the DIHL is run on two different nights it would be a shorter competition, but two games a week, so some weeks you’d play two games.[/quote:2c326jy0]

Cool, that makes more sense. Although in that case some of the documentation is wrong as it says there will be four teams in each grade.

Cool. Thanks for writing that Kyle!

I can’t see any reason why the Thunder would pull out apart from for financial reasons. They’ve done fine and haven’t had their butts kicked too severely so pulling out would seem kinda stupid unless they can’t afford to foot the bill to compete.

Yeah, unfortunately many players also fit into the “moron” category and don’t seem to get it that the best way to improve refereeing standards is to encourage my refs to join and to thank them when they do a good job. Ranting when they make an honest mistake, or even worse accusing them of being intentionally biased seems like the worst way to improve the situation.

Is that a reference to me? In which case no, I have no interest in refereeing. The players would hate me as I would enforce every irritating rule imaginable and I don’t think I’d be very good at the important side of it anyway as I don’t tend to pay enough attention and would miss stuff all the time.

Do you have any tips on how we should go about recruiting new referees/linesmen? Dunedin was in a horrid situation a few years ago with a total lack of any knowledgeable officials whatsoever and the games were kinda messy because of it. Thankfully a whole fleet of new officials signed up and the quality ramped up substantially, but now the numbers seem to be tailing of again from what I’ve seen and I assume the DIHA will be needing a new influx to boost numbers again.

If the refs feel abused, call a penalty.  Simple as that.  It’s already in the rulebook.[/quote:2erdom56]

    Exactly.

If I was a referee everyone would hate me as I’d be handing out penalities left, right and center. I guess that’s a part of the problem though, those who would enforce the rules vigorously can’t be bothered doing the job.

I’m on the fence by choosing “it will be real close”. I guess that’s the option you choose when you have no idea.

    What inline tourney is on?

And yep, I’ll be there to watch the games.

Looks like Aston has started another topic with a poll about the score … https://slapshot.hellyer.kiwi/general-chatter/ … -nz-v-aus/

The line “it’s not going to change” floats around lots of behaviour issues in sports. Things change once administrators, coaches, officials all refuse to accept it.

Currently there is no uniform response to abuse of officials, particularly from coaches. Once players start missing games because they’ve been abusing officials their attitude to it might change.

Yeah. I’ve heard similar junk in sports where people say “it’s the nature of the sport” or “players need to vent” or some other such crap. It’s easy to stop certain behaviours, you just penalize people for doing it and they’ll eventually learn not to. Once a few people are banned people will start cleaning up their act.

Some of it seems to come down to the refs too. I’ve talked to refs whose attitude has been that players start abusing them more AFTER they penalize them. The morons don’t seem to click that if ALL refs penalize players for certain activities and have a zero-tolerance policy, then problems will eventually disappear. It’s just a matter of creating a culture of behaviour.

They’re saying there will be both A and B-grades this time around with a minimum of four teams. Anyone intending to compete? I am super looking forward to it <img decoding=” title=”Cheesy” />

Does anyone know if there is a backup plan if insufficient players sign up for each grade? I think there were only four teams in the Autumn season, so if the number of players don’t double then there would be no competition if there isn’t a backup plan.

Just don’t go using the same name. Otherwise you end up with more branding issues and people not knowing what is what.

The Red Devils have a tendency to crash and burn at the end of the season, so I voted for the Stampede. Should be pretty close though.

Definitely. It’s a pain in the neck not being able to see numbers and names clearly. Plus they look ugly.
