    It seems so.

I never knew the QIHC were so involved with the Stampede. I thought it was run as an entirely separate entity much like the Thunder is.

I assumed that was being done already, but you know what they say about assumptions …

Aaron was writing up articles for the ODT I think. Not sure if he is still doing that or not.

I guess those rinks are treating the ice time as some sort of loss-leader. Every other sports stadium I’ve heard of charges a vastyl different fee to rent their facility for viewing by spectators than for private usage.

I recall being told a figure of $50,000 to rent the WestPac Stadium in Christchurch for a large spectator audience.

Providing some way to advertise it would be helpful, and informing those who are likely to advertise it for you that the games are on, ie: send some sort of notice to me or anyone else who can update the DIHA site. There’s often no notice about the game coming up until the day before because I don’t realise the game is on until then. Plus I can’t be bothered writing anything up for it, so if something was sent through that would make it much more likely that something would be posted. In particular sending through the poster would be smart, that way it can be attached to the news item for others to print off and stick in their office building, school etc. for others to see.

Updating the Thunder website with news about upcoming games would be helpful too. An update in my feed reader five days before the game would give me enough time to plan to go on the weekend, but if I don’t realise it’s on until the day before, I’m far more likely to not bother.

But whatever ticket price you charge, you won’t get all of it to fund the teams. The rink will keep a significant portion of the money wherever you hold it.[/quote:2ogeqa7i]

Actually I was assuming the rink would take ALL of the money apart from the teams costs. I think it would be too risky for them other wise … or too risky for whatever organisation did it since they’d need to cover both teams costs AND rink costs.

why does the rink require half?  How about we pay them the $300 per hour ice hire and they can keep vending sales.[/quote:2ogeqa7i]

If I owned a rink I would not accept that deal.

    1. I doubt you’d sell well at $30/game.
    2. That’s a full price ticket. Half your audience wouldn’t pay that.[/quote:2zas4f2z]

I thought $30/ticket was cheap. What is the normal cost to see something like that? I assumed Queenstown would be charging something like that for their NZIHL games (just a guess, I’ve never been there for an NZIHL game before).

    What is a “comp”?

in reply to: 2009 Round 6 Stampede vs Red Devils #12783

    500 people * $30 = $15,000 / game
    $15,000 * 2 games = $30,000 total

Add into that funding from other sources and the cost seems irrelevant to me. Or am I missing something here?

Of course this is taking the risk that you actually get 500 people per game. But I’d be surprised if that wasn’t doable in Christchurch, Auckland or Dunedin. You could split those two games between Christhchurch and Dunedin if you wanted to reduce the risk. Christchurch is almost guaranteed to be packed out, whereas Dunedin is more of a risk but could potentially fill the stands with 1500 people.

Hmm, thought it was a little higher than that.

The Dunedin team does fairly minimal advertising. It’s pretty easy to not know an event is happening … even when you are a member of the local hockey club. They just don’t seem to have enough volunteers to do that sort of thing and the rink isn’t very good at the promotional side of things.

Having said that, I’m pretty sure most games get at least 250 people, probably more. Anyone know accurate numbers for that?

Yeah, I doubt financial concerns are a problem as far as Australia vs NZ events go. The gate takings should be able to make up for the travel costs fairly easily.

Queenstown and Christchurch have tiny rinks, they can’t fit many people around them anyway.

Are you sure that the Thunder don’t have bigger crowds than both of them?

I always assumed they did, but I’m not sure.

Do other teams get larger crowds?

Two players were recruits from Tekapo/Canada I think. I heard something about the Stampede losing two players due to injury so they were able to apply for the extra players to join their team.
