The big question of course is … what were you doing on Manchester street at 2am in the morning?
imported_RyanMember[b:q3qyz5kw]A rumour I heard about Vince:[/b:q3qyz5kw]
Vince was walking down Manchester street in Christhchurch at 2am in the morning when he heard a woman screaming and detected a faint smell of burning in the air. He ran around the corner to Salsbury street where a huge group of people were standing watching a blazing building. On the second floor of the building a woman, clutching a bundle to her chest, leaned out of a window screaming for someone to save her baby.
Vince stepped forward and called up to the woman, “Throw down your baby and I’ll catch it!”
“No! No!” the woman shouted back. “You might miss or drop my baby and she’ll be killed!”
“No I won’t!” shouted Vince. “I am Vince Mitalas. I was the Goalkeeper for the Dunedin Thunder! I played in goal for them when they beat mighty Canterbury Red Devils.
“What? The Thunder beat the Red Devils? I must have missed that game!” calls the woman.
“Yes!” shouted back Vince. “Every player in the country seems to think I suck, but the stats say otherwise!
And with that he put on his spare goalie equipment in lighting quick time (he carries a spare set on him at all times for emergencies like this) and adopted the classic goalkeepers stance – legs apart and slightly bent at the knees, body slightly bent forward at the waist and with his arms stretched downwards at a slight angle away from his body, with palms facing forward.
“OK!” screamed the woman. “I’ll trust you. I’ve no choice! Here she comes!”
So, with the flames roaring all around her, the woman threw the baby from the window. However, the edge of the baby’s shawl caught on the woman’s watch with the result that the child goes spun off to one side, tumbling head over heels and with her little arms and legs flailing.
The woman screamed and the crowd gasped, all sure that the baby would perish because she would fall out of reach of Vince.
Vince remained motionless as the child descended, spinning and tumbling further and further away from him as she came. Then when the baby was only metres from hitting the ground, Vince heroically threw his left leg out and caught the baby with a perfect butterfly squat.
Vince sat their motionless. Then, slowly, he raised himself up after picking the baby up with his hand and turned to face the crowd and everyone saw that the child was alive.
The crowd was awe-struck. Then the crowd erupted with cheers and the woman, still in danger herself, nearly fainted with relief. Vince, still clutching the child in his catcher, waved to the crowd of onlookers with his blocker to acknowledge their appreciation.
Then, slowly and gracefully, Vince turned away from them, dropped the baby on the ground and proceeded to wrist shot it 30 metres down the road …
[size=1:q3qyz5kw]If you hadn’t guessed it, that is an edited version of another story, but I’m sure Vince has been in this situation before too.[/size:q3qyz5kw]

imported_RyanMemberI’d love to play, but unfortunately there is no one willing to organise inline hockey in Dunedin anymore ” title=”Sad” />
imported_RyanMemberWelcome to the forum barackobama07.
imported_RyanMember[b:2ba6rrwh]Moderately amusing story …. [/b:2ba6rrwh]
I recall Andy Kibblewhite getting quite irate about the Christchurch Snipers complaining that he didn’t bother calling something in a inline hockey game in Christchurch. The thing is, the coach of the Snipers had called the referees over to their bench to discuss something and they did (which they’re not supposed to do, the refs. are supposed to deal with the team captain on the rink AFAIK). Then when they weren’t looking, one of the Snipers oponents welted a player over the head with his stick. The refs never saw it happened and therefore never called it. The thing is, the refs shouldn’t have both been staring at the Snipers bench at the time.
This is all good and well, refs aren’t perfect and crap happens. The amusing thing though, was that anyone and everyone who saw what happened (including members of the oposing team) stood and hurled abuse at Andy and the other referee (can’t recall who that was) for it. Then the next day everyone was still ranting at them and saying they sucked. Andy got quite shitted off and ignored them all.
I waited another day, went to talk to Andy about it and asked how he felt about it and he went on a little rant for about 2 mins before I politely explained exactly what happened. He seemed quite surprised by it and his response was something like this … “oh crap, how come no one told me that’s what happened?”. Of course the reason no one told him was because they were too busy ranting like a bunch of morons and so Andy treated them accordingly. They deserved to be ignored, mistakes happen and a referee should ignore anyone ranting like a lunatic and treat them with the respect they deserve … ie: none.
Funnily enough, explaining what happened in a polite, non-threatening way was quite effective and I assume from then on Andy knew not to turn his back on everything but the bench as stuff like that can happen, particularly when you know the other referee isn’t paying attention either.
Lesson to be learned here … you can rant all you want about referees, but it’s unlikely to change anything. Either become one yourself, or provide them with helpful feedback. We need as many referees as possible, bitching about them is only likely to make it worse as we’ll have an even smaller base of referees to choose from.
imported_RyanMemberI picked “They’ll be OK, but still lose by at least 5.”. The Thunder will be well aware that they’re the underdogs and I assume will be aiming to defend as strongly as possible. They’ve got a good goalie and seem to be able to shut the other teams down when they’re not trying to hard to score, so I think that should be enough to keep the damage below 10 points. I’m not holding my breathe for too many goals from the Thunder though. Hopefully they will suprise us!
imported_RyanMemberRed Devils are too strong. Swarm don’t stand a chance.
imported_RyanMemberThanks Kyle ” title=”Smiley” />
imported_RyanMemberI highly doubt that the referees are intentionally biased.
