Yeah, hopefully lots of lessons will be learned.
I don’t think any hockey events in NZ (bar maybe this one) have been promoted in a particularly aggressive way before. I recall talking to Kyle about this for the DIHL a few years back, but we never had the funding or time to do something like that.
We need someone to pop out of the woodwork who enjoys doing promotional work like this. This stuff never seems to work very well when it’s the event organisers sending out notices at the last minute because they’re too busy doing a bazillion other things to get the events off the ground. And just creating a role and shunting a volunteer into it probably wouldn’t work either as it would require them having both motivation and skill in that area.
imported_RyanMemberIt seems Craig Douglas has been accused of inappropriate use of trademarks in the past too:

[quote:25g4avlw]Playboy seeks charity cut…
lawsuit has been filed in the New Zealand courts against Craig Douglas, who organised a Playboy Ball in Christchurch in September that drew celebrities such as All Black Byron Kelleher
….
Since then, Playboy had written to Mr Douglas advising him of a lawsuit being brought based on a series of trademark infractions.[/quote:25g4avlw]

imported_RyanMemberIf the NZIHL refused to allow it initially, I spose that could be done temporarily to prove that it’s a sound concept I suppose. I don’t think we’d struggle to get news items posted to it. There’s plenty of people around here who’d be happy to contribute to the site I think.
It would certainly be better to have something official IMO though.
I think it’s helpful in general to have an unofficial site of some sort available for people to vent, discuss things etc. that perhaps wouldn’t be allowed within official channels. But SlapShot.net.nz already fills that void pretty well I think.
imported_RyanMemberLOL
Well hopefully we can solve these issues for the 2011 season. I think Cowgirl is working on a banner for the site. Then all we need to do is decide on what goes in the sidebar, shunt the content over and we have a fully functioning website to show them.
It’ll be pretty handy if they use it, so that we can have a collection of people ready and willing to keep it updated.
If the NZIHL doesn’t want it, then perhaps the NZIHF might. Their site is better maintained obviously, but might help to have it running on an easier to use platform so that more people can contribute to it. Plus they’d save a few dollars in hosting each year.
imported_RyanMemberKyles peewee team has the edge in speed and aggression, so I’m picking them.
The rest are too hard to judge IMO. Aussie would normally be a notch higher, but who the heck knows what squad they’re bringing anyway. China is somewhere around New Zealand’s level from what I understand.

If you send me the email address you registered for WordPress.com with, then I’ll set you up with admin login details for that test site.

imported_RyanMemberThere seems to be some sort of opinion out there that we don’t like people making money off of hockey games or that there’s something wrong with running big events like this outside of the non-profit realm. I don’t think that is the case at all for anyone here (certainly isn’t for me). The issue is a moral/ethical/legal one.
Liers and cheaters deserve to be punished for their actions regardless of whether they do good in the process.
A thief could give half their stolen goods to charity, but that doesn’t make them a good person. They’re still a dirty little thief. Same principle applies here.

imported_RyanMemberBeginning of the site:
http://nzihl.wordpress.com/Any suggestions for the sidebar?
The photos are pulled from the official NZIHF photo feed, so will be updated as new photos are added to that feed. Currently it will display non-NZIHL photos if they’re posted, but we could easily ask Peter Idoine (NZIHF photographer) to tag photos with “NZIHL” so we could only display those in the sidebar.
@Vpatrol – any chance you were keen to take up my request to shunt content over? ” title=”Smiley” />imported_RyanMemberActually, don’t worry about the search and RSS links. Just discovered there’s an option to remove them without paying for it ” title=”Smiley” />
imported_RyanMemberYeah, wasn’t meant in a bad way.
I’m just confused why they didn’t purchase it for the league. Seems like a rather odd move not to own the domain name for your website!?
Any chance you could redo the banner image for it? If you could make something to fill the red bit in the image below, that would be awesome! Leaving the search box and RSS feed link suits me best as it saves paying for the WordPress.com CSS upgrade, but if you thought it was necessary to fit whatever design you thought was best, then that would be okay.
