Yep, I’ll be there. I generally prefer people to email me suggestions though.

James van Leeuwen had a bunch of suggestions for me recently, some of which were discussed in a meeting. Most them were good suggestion, with a couple of impossible/expensive ones thrown in. I’ve started nutting out how to do some of them and there’ll be changes coming up accordingly. In particular, you’ll be able to have news posts added directly to your Facebook account. One important one James was keen on was to be able to register to receive email notifications whenever a news post related to a topic you are intererested in is posted, this is a little trickier but I think I should be able to sort it out – I haven’t started on that yet.

Minor changes will be coming shortly (including Smash James being moved and a hockey pic in it’s place) and major changes will probably be coming at some stage next year.

I’m not sure what you have in mind Chris, but definitely let me know if it’s something simple.

Off-topic: We may have SkaterCam soon! The Dunedin Ice Skating Club may be using the camera for their Christmas show DVD.

What exactly have they shot down? Last I heard, they weren’t willing to offer a discounted deal on rates (or something along those lines) which they had promised at one point. However the almighty grape vine told me that the owner was still planning to go ahead with their plans anyway, they were just holding out to try and pressure the Wellington City Council into fulfilling their original promise.

In defense of the Wellington City Council, the rink here in Dunedin is a charitable company whereas the Wellington rink was being setup as an entirely private commercial entity. I can understand councils being more willing to plow money into something which isn’t there to make a profit but only to help the community.

It’s definitely a bummer to hear it’s not going well for them though It would be nice to have another rink in the country, particularly in a major center such as Wellington.

Here’s some clips from the University of Calgary Intramural hockey league. This is basically the social grade for the university. They had A, B and C-grades for non-checking and a contact grade. The contact grade was about the same level as the B-grade although there was a larger range of players competing. I’ve only got footage of the B and A-grades though. C-grade was pretty crappy, I would have been one of the stronger players in the league (top 20% maybe) if I’d competed, I’d guess it’s somewhere between Christchurch’s A and B-grades, but with a broader range of playing skill.

Team Group Velocity was the team I played for. It was actually
the physics and astronomy departments team, but they were short
players so let me and my friend Janay (yellow socks) play for them.

I played with most of the stubble jumpers at lunchtimes.
This video is from them winning the B-grade finals.

the guy Rick who scored the winning goal at the end of the video.

Thanx for the help. BTW how do you get to the ice rinks with out having to walk over the speed skating rink?
[/quote:3r9tzqj3]

Lol, that tricks a lot of people There’s a tunnel which runs underneath the rinks and you pop out between the two hockey rinks. You have to go through the tunnel to use the speed skating oval too as they don’t like people hopping over the barriers.

I’ve played a bit of recreational level senior hockey in Calgary. I competed in the University of Calgary Intramural Hockey League B-grade (they had A, B, C and a contact grade). Christchurch premier grade teams would have slotted in nicely into their A-grade and Christchurch A-grade teams would be around their C-grade although they have a wider range of players. Peoples definition of “recreational” is a bit different to New Zealand’s “recreational” hockey. Recreational teams in Canada are often a lot more serious than teams here, so don’t be put off by the tag “recreational”, the players have usually played to quite a high level in the past and aren’t training as hard anymore, but that doesn’t mean they don’t take it seriously. NZIHL teams would be above the level of most actual recreational level teams there. If you are heading to Calgary, then definitely let me know as I can hook you up with some teams/leagues to contact and let you know roughly what level you’d want to be playing at.

As Vince said though, it’ll depend on where you are as to what level you’d be playing at. There’s leagues everywhere though and you should be able to find a team to play for. The trick is to actively look for a team, even advertising for one may be necessary as you usually need to know someone to get on a team. I played in a social scrimmage at lunch times for a while and met heaps of people from that and eventually managed to wrangle my way into a couple of different teams that way.

[b:2dlz9oga]Off-topic:[/b:2dlz9oga] The pic below is where I played most of my hockey in Calgary. It’s the Olympic Oval where the 1988 Olympic speed skating was held. There’s two international sized rinks in the middle surrounded by a long track speed skating oval. It’s also where I met Jenel Bode and where she asked me the question “So, yer from New Zealand eh? Do you have any idea how I’d go about getting a job there?” – and that’s how we got a coach in Dunedin

My bad! I need to pay off the bills for the Caledonian gym first.

What you could do though Tom. Is just tell us all to turn up at a particular spot at an exact time and we’ll all turn up. The courts at Kavanagh College are a good option, ditto for George St junior school. We did that a bit last time and it worked quite well. Leave a post here and chances are everyone will text everyone else and we should have a decent turnout. We did this quite a bit last summer and it worked well.

And before anyone suggests it … beside the rink is crappy. It’s cold, windy, there’s no walls and there’s a big dip in the middle of, plus there’s often cars about.

Dolkar and her friends in school have to create all that is needed for hockey from scratch, everything from hockey skates and sticks to the very ice they skate on.[/quote:r5gqsgi6]

Does that mean they made an artificial rink? Or they swept some ice off of a pond?

the current system of texting everyone you know with the details and a ‘pass it on’ message seems to work well enough. its worked in the past, and worked for tonight, there was a reasonable turnout.

I totally disagree. I think that’s the worlds shittiest way of contacting people. It’d work if EVERYONE was available by text … but they’re not. Unless there was a 100% coverage of players by that route I don’t think it’s a good idea at all. Contact details and lists of who attends what practices don’t even seem to be kept, so even if there are accurate lists of everyones cell numbers it’s still going to fail some people. There’s been some EXTREMELY pissed off players in the past few years who have turned up to practice after travelling from out of town, just to turn up to an empty rink; 95% of the players knew there was no practice on, but 5% didn’t, unsurprisingly those 5% aren’t happy, particularly when they’ve looked on the website and confirmed that the practice was indeed on.
