I wouldn’t think it would be that hard if we made email and cellphone mandantory information at registration, to load them into a central database would it.
Even if you setup a hotmail/gmail account, with groups midgets/seniors etc it would be fairly easy to send bulk emails every time they need to be sent.[/quote:1w8a2nsb]

Yep, albeit a hotmail/gmail account isn’t such a good idea.

I was told that email and cell numbers would be collected at registration this year, but it wasn’t Hopefully that doesn’t happen for 2008 though. It seems to be more of an issue for people now which is good to see.

And one person, or the club just buys a telecom phone and loads everyones numbers onto it, and texts it out, that way you can send 500 msgs a month for 10$.[/quote:1w8a2nsb]

That would be great, but it requires a reliable volunteer which tends to be tricky to find

Fair enough. I haven’t had the same success with email myself, but as a former DIHL organiser, you’d probably have a far better idea than I.

I agree with Kyle on this. Albeit I’d give at least a week for people to read any email you send them. Some people only check their email once a week!?

I don’t think the issues with email in the club are related to peoples lack of using email, but more lack of the club having a reliable email system setup. We had that for the DIHL, but had no possible way to extend that to cover the club as a whole. The other issue is that decisions are made WAAYYY too late. For example the decision to rejig the Thursday night sessions should have been made a long time ago, not at the last minute like this. That way those who don’t check their email very often will have time to check it and those who don’t will hopefully find out through the grapevine and probably directly via their coach. Those people who don’t use email were generally covered by text massaging although a few fell through the cracks. We also had a few gremlins creep in as we somehow missed a few emails off our list a couple of times, albeit that was rectified later on.

My understanding is that steps are underway to obtain contact details from all players next season. Although I was told the same thing last season so we’ll wait and see.

I think much of this can be ironed out with an effective scheduling system. Hence I’m working on that at the mo. Will remain to be seen whether it actually gets finished or not though.

Ryan,

PS: Some people do get pissy if they aren’t contacted by phone and are treated like a little baby. They can get particularly irate if they’re not personally reminded about registering for things. Those people tend to be so annoying I’m usually happy they didn’t register anyway though. I think this is an issue which is rapidly improving with time though as people realise they NEED to use email to find out what’s going on.

There’s free txt messaging services out there. Most add an advert to the end of the msg.

I’ve never seen any which work for NZ. Or at least, none that have worked long term. There have been services which were introduced, before adding a charge to them later on once they’ve got you hooked on it.

I don’t know who is responsible for this kind of thing, but whoever’s being so slow at getting important information to you is really fucking players over.[/quote:3um03wa4]

It’s not so much the fault of anyone, but the setup of the committee which is at fault here. There aren’t any procedures for dealing with this stuff unfortunately so it ends up coming down to word of mouth via the grapevine.

If I can get Julian and Callan to get a scheduling system up and running for us this should help enormously. Fingers crossed for 2008.

I’d go so far as to suggest an investment in a SMS-system, the like of which is employed by Video Ezy, medical practices and, most recently, my hairdresser. They are not particularly expensive to run, and people, kids especially, generally respond well to text information.
[/quote:3um03wa4]

Costs a minimum of about 13c per text. So can get a bit costly if you need to send stuff on a regular basis. James van Leeuwen had some interesting advice on setting up and auto emailing system for the site which I’ll be looking into. Ie: Important news would get automatically emailed to those who’ve registered for it.

I’ll probably be supplying instructions at some stage for setting up peoples Facebook accounts to feed news posts directly into their profile, possibly even into their Mini-Feed. That way it acts as both a news source for the person who’s profile it’s on, but also as an advertisement to anyone who’s reading that persons profile. Some of the news posts would also show up on other peoples News Feeds, so that wouldn’t even need to visit the persons profile to see the news posts, just having them as a friend would feed some of them through (not all mini-feed things get fed through to the news feed in Facebook).

Well this is ridiculously late notice, but Jackie has replied to my email.

Apparently ALL practices have been cancelled apart from Adult beginners. And the one tomorrow night is a one-off and opinions will be collected on who, what, why, when and how any new practices for 2007 will be organised.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get some sort of procedure put in place for 2008 for dealing with this stuff, as it’s quite haphazard relying on random bits of info. flowing in via the grapevine like this.

And a poll which doesn’t allow you to select 3/4 options?
[/quote:1e573rpf]

Poo. That would be smart wouldn’t it! If I revert it now then the results from those who have voted will skew it in favour of those who have already voted so I’ll leave it as is I guess. My bad.

EDIT: actually, only two options have been chosen anyway so I’ve changed it to two instead of three.

Ok just so you all know it is 7.00pm not 7.30pm as I stuffed up the time.

Now this is what happened at the meeting on Monday night. The DIHA want Ryan to set up a poll to find out what everybody wants in the form of practices. Obviously this week is going to be a little different as no one knows anything yet. Also James etc want to have practices earlier as there is no one using the ice after 6pm on a Thursday anymore. Apparently last week they combined intermediates and seniors (advanced) together and it worked quite well so they plan to keep a similar thing happening now.

Now the choices for the poll are:

[list:3dn1j037]
[*:3dn1j037]Structured games[/*:m:3dn1j037]
[*:3dn1j037]Scrimmage + Drills[/*:m:3dn1j037]
[*:3dn1j037]Drills only[/*:m:3dn1j037]
[*:3dn1j037]Scrimmage only[/*:m:3dn1j037][/list:u:3dn1j037]

The only thing is that the polls don’t work to well as people don’t see it or they can’t be bothered clicking on it. So Ryan if it is possible maybe you could have the poll as a pop up for signed in members that way at least they are reading it and are likely to then pick a choice.[/quote:3dn1j037]

I’m definitely not adding a pop-up. I’ll add a news time instead. Not sure why I ended up with this job, but anywhos. Any poll on here is going to be quite skewed as it is, but yeah, adding a news item might help so I’ll do that.

So there’s two practices in a row with the same people in both? I’m assuming not, but from what you’ve said it seems that that is the case.

Would be nice if I can get a definitive answer on this practice messup as it’s starting to look a little ridiculous again. I’m assuming the intermediate and advanced practices have been cancelled and replaced by this new 7pm unnamed one, but I’ll keep advertising as per Joyce’s request until I hear otherwise.

EDIT: I’ve added news posts for the 7pm session and another one for the merged session, with a comment saying that it ‘may’ be part of the 7pm session, but it may not be and more information will be posted when provided to me.

Correction: I was thinking that intermediate practice was at 7pm which was wrong.

I’ve shunted a couple of posts in the “Website Administration Forum” as they were a off-topic. I’ve also edited one of my posts as it was apparently offensive!?

Ryan,

in reply to: New Zealand Out Hockey #7059

This type of event is normally in support of alternative sexualities, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all competitors are gay, bi, transgender or any weird ass sexual preference some people have. Obviously most of the competitors tend not to be straight as Kyle pointed out, but it’s usually not a requirement.

Another Dunedin hockey player I talked to about this a few weeks ago said they’d be too scared to compete in something like that if it wasn’t open to non-gays as they didn’t want to come out of the closet. Leaving the door open to everyone prevents that from being an issue. It also means that random people can enter and drag along friends to join them so they don’t feel out of place joining a team of random people they don’t know. Or at least that’s what I’ve been told by people who have entered these events in the past.

But in a nutshell, yes Aaron, it’s a bit weird, in fact the whole concept of having sporting event based around sexuality is a freakin’ bizaare since sport has nothing to do with that facet of life – well, not for me anyway! But they seem to be popular and from what I’ve heard tend to be super fun. Albeit you’d better … [i:3aj588uw]removed coz was apparently offensive!?[/i:3aj588uw]

There’s also the added bonus that player numbers could be a little lean, so allowing randoms to play beefs up the ranks a bit. Kinda like how the NZ University ice hockey games allowed non uni. members play to beef up numbers.

Sounds like an excellent idea.

But if it was to be held at Tekapo, shouldn’t the Tekapo people organise it?[/quote:df2tzolz]

That would require someone in Tekapo being willing to organise it The other problem is making sure that it’s run well, as if it’s run by some half-wit I could see them coming up short on numbers. Convincing people to join a hockey team in support of gay ideology is likely to be an uphill battle as it is.

Any suggestions on who to contact in other centers to organise such an event for us?

Naseby, Tekapo and Queenstown seem the most likely candidates.
