Uhh wasn’t Afinogenov benched last week for playing like a selfish albeit highly skilled Russian?
Russian phenoms are like freak shows at the three ring circus, incredibly skilled at the seemingly bizarre and yet useless when it comes to team play. Look up Bure.  Wow.  Great TV but nearly useless as a team player.  He was fun to watch as long as you weren’t hoping your team would win. We can discuss Yashin next.

Let me ask you this, If you’re the coach of an NHL team and you are in the conference finals who would you rather have on the bench, Affy or Sid?  Which player is going to take the hit too make the play? Which player will play through pain and injury to help his team succeed?

Stiffy, you’re being seduced by You-Tube clips.  Affy and Ovvy are brilliant You-tube stars but they are way too flamboyant and individualistic to lead an NHL team to the Cup.

Stalin killed the notion of team play in Russia; all the boys from Russia really want is to put on a big show so they can make the big bucks to buy cheesy western luxury goods like fur coats and  “look at me” cars so they can date tennis stars. They don’t need to win to obtain their lifestyle so their heart’s are not in the game when the real hockey begins and things start to hurt. The last great Russian player was Larionov.  The Professor was brilliant and knew how to play on a team and, according to  Scotty Bowman, was a critical component in the Red Wings most recent Stanley Cup glory years.

If you have a Russian fetish, Larionov is the man.

nice to see someone who’s bloody sensible round here, cheers tom.

Mines the great one, i once watched that official documentary series on him, with keifer sutherland hahaha cracked me up, they had like little old ladies on there saying “i cried for 3 days when wayne was drafted to the kings. I really did” quote unquote haha
    [/quote:3tifsb2c]

He wasn’t drafted, he was traded. Damn you kiwi’s get your bloody lingo correct!!!!!!! <img decoding= --> Anywho I vote for Other. They said he was better then Wayne Gretzky, better then Brett Hull, hell even better then Mario, he’d be better then them all. haha Me so funny. Actually that Gretzky line is from a song called “Blade of Steel” by Moneyshot. They are from my home town of Victoria, B.C. Anywho, favorite NHL player, that would have to be Forsberg in his glory days with the Avs or Theo Fluery. Although I have always been a big fan of Trevor Linden.

You’re lying.  Or just plain wrong.  A little psychoanalysis would bring you closer to your true feelings of who your favourite hockey payer is.

I’ll send you in the right direction;  for starters your favourite player is NOT a Swede.

    Work on it.

    Post your revelation

    Good to hear.

Last week we played with only 7 skaters  so we’ll probably be in the same boat as the Bull frogs.  I doubt anyone will be complaining about ice time tonight.

Well the Sharks are finished.  It’s really hard to advance in the playoffs with an inexperienced blue line and I think that’s what happened to San Jose.  The battle between the Ducks and the Red Wings should be a good one.  Pronger vs Lidstrom and Chelios.

I bet the Sharks are already working on a post season deal to firm up their blue line.

We were an all-junior squad this past weekend.  Queenstown dressed quite a few more skaters than us, they ran 3 lines of forwards and 2 D’s and we skated 10 players – 2 forward lines and 2 defensive pairings.  Also we spent quite a bit more time in the penalty box than Queenstown so the team had to really dig deep into their reserves for both games.

The penalties weren’t really a problem for us, typically I moved a D to forward for the PK so that I would have 3 defensive minded players on the ice for most of the penalty and it seemed to work well.  In fact Zanzzy netted a key short handed (and un-assisted) goal for us in the second period of the second game.
Last week in practice we worked on the fundamentals of body checking and those new skills are really what won us the second game.
Both games were really close but the team played much better in the second game.  It was a very physical match which allowed us to plug up the ice and prevent the Rangers from developing a cohesive attack.  Our net minder Tony was  busy in the first game  — and played fantastic —  but in the second game we were able to greatly reduce the number of Ranger shots on net while generating  more opportunities at the opposite end of the rink.

It was great to finish up the trip with the win and the team is ready to work on a plan for the re-match that will take place on home ice.  The team we played are good skaters and we’ll have to play our best to beat them on big and fast ice that we have here in Dunedin.

Thanks for the compliment Matt.  I’ll shoot when I can, and the club can have any pics I take.  I’m happy to help out anyway I can and if my pics are beneficial to the club then I’m happy to do it. It’s a hard rink to shoot in though and I’m still not happy with the results I’ve been getting.  I’m gonna try sitting on a ladder in the end zones and see if I can get some better pics.

Besides, I’d way rather have Jenel’s coaching.

This is one of my favourites..  Billy Guerin (here a Blues but now a shark)has really intense facial expressions when he plays — he really seems to amp himself up for every shift.  Some guys are mouth breathers and make for crappy photos and some players are expressionless (Marleau).  Billy is expressive and intense.  Although the focus is on the goalie(Billy is a little out of the focal plane) I like that you can see the intensity of the game in this photo.  Also I really like that you can see exactly where everyone is looking. The goalie, Toskala, knows exactly where the puck is and so does Guerin and the defender.  It’s surprisingly hard to get a shot of both faces and the puck.  If I had been on the opposite side of the rink I would have only seen the backsides of the players.

Here’s another shot of Vlasic.  Imagine this: you’ve just turned 18, you’ve made the cut on an NHL team that is built around winning the Stanley Cup  now (the Sharks are not in a building for the future phase at all) and the coach puts you out on the ice against Jaomir Jagr.
    Yikes!

And check out the intensity expressed on Jagr’s face. Watching him play is a real treat.

Damn Joe, you’re shading out posts by putting all those damn action shots in. What’s your favourite/best photo that you’ve taken of NHL action?
    [/quote:d0zth7rh]

My favourite hockey photo is at home on my hard drive (dang) but it’s not an action shot.  I was working on a story about teenagers in the NHL (and was based out of San Jose) and I had been taking a bunch of photos of Marc-Edouard Vlasic.  Vlasic turned 18 just before the start of the season and, as a young defense man, was not expecting to make the roster for the season.  (Defense men usually get seasoned in the minors) I was at the game when he scored his first goal but unfortunately I missed the shot because he scored at the other end of the rink and he also celebrated his first goal behind the  net.  I was totally bummed out that I missed the shot but after the game I asked the equipment manager about the puck and he proceeded to dig it out for for me.  I took the puck over to Vlasic in the changing room and he happily agreed to pose for me.  The picture I took is kinda crappy but I felt like it was a real privilege to be able to get the shot and he was genuinely happy that I wanted to take the photo. ( and that’s turned out to be one of the photos that the agency ran)
Also, Vlasic asked me if I managed to get any photos of him battling with Crosby, he really wanted a copy….

Boston Management was on crack when they traded this guy.
Thornton can lead a team to the cup.
