I think the idea of having their own is brilliant, and i am sure there are many people who would be able to work this through with them.
As to the idea of using their sticks – great! If the opposition is afraid of it then all the better!
War haka (peruperu) were originally performed by warriors before a battle, proclaiming their strength and prowess in order to intimidate the opposition.

If they are unable to perform this due to other teams not wanting them too, this will fire the Ice Blacks up even more (or should for those that understand it’s significance)!

If you guys actually want the league to grow, then the addition of a Trans Tasman Tournament is the obvious next step.
    This has amazing potential:
The access to Import players who are willing to travel in their off season,
Potential Sponsorship opportunities, Media coverage for players, coaches, teams and both leagues.

Think we need to focus on the positives on this one, rather than bitching about costs, scheduling etc.
I think the teams that do make it would be stoked for a Weekend in Aussie facing some good opposition.
As to the state of the Ice Blacks vs “The Australian Team”, if we had staked our national team with a line of the NZIHL imports there may have been a different result.
As it was to lose 4 -1 in the final I think we can hold our heads high with the standard of the New Zealand National Team.

Stop bitching about it and embrace it as an opportunity to showcase Ice Hockey in both countries.

It wasn’t the Goal Judge it was me!
Should learn to handle a bit of heckling, all good fun, just told the goalie that his mum left her bag at my house!

I’m picking Stampede Botany Final in Auckland, seeing how Devils will have to play 3rd string Goalie for at least 25 mins of one game against Admirals.
Otherwise they will loose league points for playing an import goalie for more than 2/3 of the regular season.
Sounds like they may lose a Defenseman aswell for a shocking display over the weekend.

The Stampede on the other hand just have to win 4 from 4 – Can’t wait for the final two games in Dunedin – Bring it on!

Half the Devils were so disappointed at their own behaviour they couldn’t even shake hands after the game……thought we taught our kids how to do that.
The other half of the team did thou, nice one Vince.

Clearly Kyle, that person yelling at the ref’s was me
Clearly your family is quite small
Clearly Tripping is not when a player stands on the opponents stick and asses over on his way off the bench is it? – If you believe what we all saw on Saturday then oh yes it is.

Clearly I don’t ref, why would I with all those hostile Southern Stampede supporters yelling at me!

I say it again, all I was suggesting is that we assist the local officials by supporting them with International Officials to train and support them though the NZIHL season, this of couse can include NZJEL if it means more time on the Ice for the Officials.
We have allowed import players in the league – which yes can assist or hinder a team depending on the import player. We have been lucky so far with our imports

We allow import coaches – once again sometimes their experience is great, sometimes it can do more harm than good – Thunder will atest to this

As for the Officials being lowly paid, well their are a few people around the NZIHL who do a hell of alot more work to get the NZIHL happening during the season that have yet to be paid, purely for the love of the game and to see the league succeed!

Sadly Plod, this Armchair Referee pays to come and see these games, and which if we as the armchair referee’s stop coming to the games then i believe then there will be no more NZIHL as sadly it doesn’t pay for itself.

Kyle, I agree that the 10K would be well spent, that to me as is not an expense it is an investment in New Zealand Ice Hockey as a whole. Maybe the NZIHF need to front with this cash. or look for a sponsor for the referee’s, sponsors logo on the tops, would be good to see a bit more colour on their shirts than red & black!

Seems crazy to me that this is such a problem, I am trying to get some discussion started to help the officials and find way to do this?

If we need to raise funds to do this, let me know how much and I am happy to try and source this if the NZIHL or the NZIHF are unable to come to the party

We only need 2 International Ref’s for our season as there are only 4 teams playing each weekend, that would mean 1 for each game.
If we are to send ref’s over seas for training then we would need to send 2, whereas if we bring ref’s in they can coach and do clinic etc while they are here to all who want to up their game.

Im not talking about coaches, but if we get referees through the IIHF and their ranking was good then we should be right.
Disagree with the coaches, maybe we have been lucky down here in Queenstown all the import coaches we have had have worked bloody hard, with not only the Stampede but also all grades of the game.
In thinking about it all our Head Coaches have been Kiwi’s

Just think it needs to be discussed at the top level of the game before we start losing more players due to frustration.

I agree the state of the NZIHL website is pretty rough, a new one is coming!
    When 2015?

Plod why are you scared for International ref’s coming in?
I appreicate the job you guys do as referees and as you say you are only human and we all
know that humans make mistakes. but the standard needs to lift.
If that means the NZIHL or the NZIHF need to throw some cash at the issue I say money well spent.
As with stating the there is a declining player base, this could be caused by them becoming frustrated at current state of the officiating at the top level of NZ hockey.

Polovu? is he the one who is in the country without a current permit?

Agree, we need to get our own ref’s trained up by the international ref’s while they are here! Baby steps started 6 years ago when the league started. Everything has grown, except the speed in which the level of refereeing is increasing.
Yes we need our own referees but they need to be of a higher standard than they are now, and the problem is that that next year things will get worse.
It is a shame because I believe it is holding the NZIHL back.

I think alot of the penalties are being caused by player frustration, all the players and the people watching want is that the calls that are being made are being made consistantly.

VPatrol – Wasn’t talking about ref clinics but actual overseas refs, I think the league has come a long way in the last 6 years, in regards to the players and the game, all that seems to be holding it back is the quality of the ref’s

Not the ref’s fault as you say there is a big jump for SNC to NZIHL, but that should not be holding the NZIHL back.

Players and fans are getting really over seeing the same mess every game.

I would also like to point out that the ref’s are not the sole reason the Stampede lost this weekend, they helped, but not being able to clear our defensive zone and not being able to put the puck in the net are the main reasons!

Looks like the refs had a bad weekend, lots of big and shit calls for both sides by the refs!
Time to get together and not play until the NZIHL spend some money on international refs, the only way the NZIHL are going to do anything about this is if they don’t have teams to play in their league.
Both teams supports tonight agreed that the refs were shit tonight, it’s funny cause we apparently had the referees coaching clinic in Queenstown this weekend, didn’t show.
    Go the Thunder tomorrow!
