So charging NHL prices (top market prices) but you only get potentially 66-75% of the game time?  Count me in especially cause my favorite nhl superstar will be on the ice for 50% of the game.

If they’re fringe NHLers, they must be bringing Edmonton. They’re almost good enough to play in the NHL these days.

There’s a Canadian Ball Hockey Hall of Famer called Kerry Goulet? Also played some ice hockey in Germany.

    No that’s a rule.

If you check someone, and it drives their head or neck into the boards, that’s boarding. Unless the referee rules that the checked player turned in some way so that the checking player was unable to prevent it. Basically if you hit someone, you’re assuming some responsibility for their safety when they land.

I can’t think of a way you could have a boarding penalty otherwise.

The injury was caused by the location not the act. And that is not Chara’s fault. I think the deeper issue is a safety one caused by rink design.

Not his fault, but his responsibility. As the checking player you’re responsible for the other person’s safety. Hard to adjust your check for the location on the ice sure, but Pacioretty can’t do much about protecting himself there.

I found it interesting that the call was checking to the head. No check to the head there, the check was into the body and the head was driven into the post – I would have called that boarding.

Better design would surely help – I worry about the posts at the end of the benches at the Dunedin rink. The pads come off pretty easily and it’s a hard edge.

    I doubt it will be 3 x 20. They’ve discussing using different times – it might be 3×15 or 4 x 10 or something.

The only announcers even a little bit close I can find is Terry Ficorelli: http://www.nancysajdakmanning.com/html/Link3.html

But he’s never done NHL games.

Terry Crisp does Nashville analyst work?

There’s no Terry, and no Toulet in the relevant sections of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Google and Wikipedia have nothing.

    Maybe they misspelt Aaron Bryant?

What’s the good in that? Same number of people see the game, but get charged higher prices to pay the promoter? That’s just taking money directly off hockey fans and giving it to someone for no other benefit.

Most rinks already charge $20/ticket for national league games. That’s about the same price as a ticket to a Super 15 rugby game, and relatively the quality of play is a lot better in rugby. If your model involves “we promote the same game more so there’s more demand so we can charge more and if you don’t have the money you miss out” then your model needs some work.

I didn’t miss the point. I just think that they’ve pumped a bit more cash injection into promoting it and probably have a better idea of, which I haven’t seen hockey organisations in NZ do this extent before.

As far as I know the other four rinks tend to be fairly close to full at national league games – none of them hold anywhere near as many as Dunedin. So there would be limited value in appointing a professional promoter when there’s no more tickets to be sold in 80% of the games.

The NZIHF is working to try and get a 4th team for the NZ Winter games after Korea indicated that they weren’t able to come. One of the options they are looking at is the Allen Cup champions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_cup) which is the amateur champion in Canada. The Allen Cup champions sometimes tour other places as Team Canada endorsed by Hockey Canada. A lot of players who could have paid pros, but chose a different career.

Paul, that’s exactly what the Canadian Moose do. There’s another similar organised based in New York. That’s largely what Douglas Webber have organised – a piss trip with a sideline in hockey.

Yeah, it is pretty funny that it is the Moose after all.

But you have to give the organizers one thing: they sure know how to promote via radio, press release, etc. This event has turned out to be way higher profile than any NZIHL event has ever been. Perhaps we can learn from them?  I’ve had all sorts of people ask me about this Canada vrs US series. No one ever asked me before about NZIHL games. People out there who have never seen a hockey game before are curious and now wanting to go to this event. The games may seem like a laughable jack up, but the promotion is really getting ice hockey out there in front of people who never were interested before.

If the Thunder would be willing to change their name to Team Canada, Red Devils to Finland, West Auckland to Team USA, etc etc, promotion would be a hell of a lot easier until people caught on.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darryl_Shannon
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Wilso … _hockey%29

Both were genuine NHLers, both have three figure games under their belt, but both long gone from the NHL. Shannon has been retired for about six years. Wilson played in Europe for a number of and then the ECHL after leaving the NHL.

I would have guessed, though it’s not clear from the material that Shannon and Wilson are the captains of the Canadian moose oldtimers teams that are travelling with the main senior teams, and than Quincey and Schremp are the captains of the senior teams that will play the headlines.

I have received a report that the rink is ok subject to an engineer?s green sticker/inspection but due to lack of water they are unable to keep the ice plant running. Alpine will be closed till further notice.

NZIHF AGM that was to be this weekend has been postponed until April.

that’s not the media. Scoop is largely a press release site – they’ve just published the release put out by the promoters.
