[/quote:53a2djxt]I think they’ll be looking at people who turned up for trials, that being the traditional way to make the team.

MemberDevils have lost a bunch of players. Stampede must be the favourite, questions for the season will be if swarm or devils will push through, and how Thunder will go with the strong imports that they’re bringing in, plus some domestic transfers that have made them look a lot stronger.

Certainly the minor savings would be no where near the problem of not having the IIHF or Sky TV sponsors paying for it.

MemberDunedin may consider that, but I’m not sure we’re in the right place for 2011. Maybe 2012.

[/quote:1rzhg9rt]Division III world champs received $300K swiss francs, most of which got used. A franc is worth near enough to a US dollar. That doesn’t include all the costs that the teams associate with picking teams, training teams, any camp on the way, and getting to the tournament – those are up to the teams that come. The base money pays for accommodation, food for about 150 people for a week, officials from 11 different countries to fly here and be put up, transport in Dunedin, and about a hundred other things. You increase the number of teams, you bump up all those costs.
For the Australian team that came for NZ winter games, I believe their flights to NZ were also paid for, as well as all tournament costs, accommodation, food etc. That would most likely need to be repeated, the chances of getting the Mexican team here if they had to pay all their own way, for a tournament that has no meaning beyond bragging rights would be slim.
Plus there’s no sponsorship for India playing Chile in NZ. There’s no TV audience for such a game.

[/quote:2qbsgjzm]The budget wouldn’t extend to two divisions for starters. For two divisions to work you’d need 8 teams – 4 in each.
Secondly, there’s no value bringing countries that are outside of the rankings system here to NZ for something that is about the same level as premier club hockey. It’d be like $30K a team in flights and accommodation. That’s a lot of money that no one has for no additional value to NZ ice hockey. Some of these countries don’t even have proper gear for all their players.
Most of those teams already play in a tier two tournament in Asia. Paying for them to come play it again against the same teams that they play in Asia (that we’ve also paid to bring here) makes no sense.
Kyle
MemberIf we’re going to find sponsors to cough up a six figure sum to bring five teams here for a tournament which would be on TV, we wouldn’t be doing it for the teams at the other end, we’d be doing it for NZ ice hockey.
You’d teams ranked in the 30s – Australia, Mexico, China etc. Good competition for each other, 2nd div teams.
Bringing India here to play the ice blacks would be a complete waste of their time and ours. In much the same way the Ice Blacks didn’t play the Finnish national team before going to Estonia, they played Finnish club teams. If India came here you’d want them to play club prem teams or maybe nzihl teams at best.
They already have an asian tournament below IIHF World Champs which they play in – Asia Cup.
Kyle
MemberYou wouldn’t want to choose non IIHF ranked countries. The other list is a pretty good one.
Kyle
Member3 drawn games last year – one devils/stampede, two admirals/swarm.
Kyle
MemberThe NZ winter games – every second year should grow from two teams to a full tournament – pacific rim countries.
Kyle
MemberIt’s the result of a number of things, but probably primarily the setting up of the national league. Raises the level of domestic play, which pushes the international play higher. Hopefully they should be able to hold themselves in that division.

MemberSweet. NZ killed a 5 minute major on Hay, Spiers with the game winning goal on the power play. Nothling makes 34/35 saves. 4th is a great result.
Estonia looks like winning promotion, currently 5 goals up on Romania.

Queenstown have moved the round to during the morning so that Dunedin seniors can make it back in time for the Premier final which is that night.
Kyle
MemberA bunch of the Estonian team are full time professionals. They were unlucky not to win promotion (narrow lost to Serbia) last year. 3-0 in the first period is a good result, looking at the scoresheet they had periods where they let in 3 goals in a minute or so a couple of times, so they probably let is slip a bit and the Estonians racked it up.
Kyle
MemberRomania pound Israel 20-0. NZ’s next two games are going to be real hard.
