    I can top that.

But you wouldn’t want to see me in goal. It’s like stretching a flounder out, putting it in goalie gear, and then throwing it on the ice.

I realise you’re just having fun Marc, but please don’t bring my peewee kids into it. They were very supportive of the Thunder last year, they’ll be very supportive of the Thunder this year.

How does it benefit the club, save it, yet at the same time not affect it Wick? <img decoding=” title=”Wink” />

I’ve got some clarification on some things about the event. It’s been run by the NZ Winter Games. http://www.wintergamesnz.com/.

    Sky are just broadcasting it.

I presume we’ll have enough people for that, does he do food as well?

Eureka will probably be tricky. They tend to be full at lunch and I’m not sure if they’ll want people coming there just to watch the tv and have a drink. Might work. I don’t know if they get the full sky package though.

What about Baaaa Bar or whatever it’s called? Couple of blocks off campus but not too far.

I’m going for penguins myself. Hoping they reverse last year’s result, but that it goes to 7 games.

I should say that’s just my assumption by the fact that Sky is paying for it all, they’ll probably be trying to rake back as much as possible, the rink might be getting a portion, or they might being paid enough as a flat rate to not be concerned about the gate. I don’t know how expensive tickets will be, but I presume they’ll be over $20 each. Australia just got bumped down to Division II, Ice Blacks are going to have to be on fire to come close to them if they bring a full strength team.

The rink is stoked that they’re going to be hosting the biggest ice hockey event in New Zealand since someone first played the game here. Live on national TV, tens of thousands watching, going to be good for all the clubs and the rink.

It’ll give them professional footage to showcase the rink to international audiences. It’ll be a test case for how events at the rink can be televised for a national audience. It would be massive if there was any flow on to some sort of TV coverage for the NZIHL. This happened to the NZ basketball league in the late 80s and it was very big for the sport – 13 years later NZ finished 4th in the world champs, went to olympics etc.

As we have more information about what we can and can’t do we’ll probably put together some people like Rhys to try and make the whole event as good as possible.

Sky will be showing live coverage of the Stanley Cup Finals starting this weekend. It’s all been brought forward stateside to reflect the conference finals finishing early.

    Dates and times:

Gm 1: Sun 31st Pittsburgh @ Detroit Noon NZDT

Gm 2: Mon 1st Pittsburgh @ Detroit Noon NZDT

Gm 3: Wed 3rd Detroit @ Pittsburgh Noon NZDT

Gm 4: Fri 5th Detroit @ Pittsburgh Noon NZDT

Gm 5: Sun 7th Pittsburgh @ Detroit Noon NZDT*

Gm 6: Wed 10th Detroit @ Pittsburgh Noon NZDT*

Gm 7: Sat 13th Pittsburgh @ Detroit Noon NZDT*

The sky guide shows it’ll be on Sky 3.

Last year we caught the first weekend game in the Terrace in the Octagon which was good. Everyone meet there noon this Sunday?

Weekday games – Bowler is gone, the Cook? I haven’t been in for ages there but I presume they still have sky.

    That’s somewhat true.

There was what sounds like an ‘almost’ incident. Nothing actually happened, but a bunch of people were being dicks and threats were made of doing shit.

The rulebook only refers to disciplinary action against players from on-ice incidents. There isn’t any vehicle there for off-ice incidents to come before the rulebook disciplinary panel.

The constitution has a different disciplinary set of rules (bringing the rulebook up to date with the constitution might be one of my jobs for the upcoming summer unless someone else wants to look at it sooner). That doesn’t limit it to on ice. The term used in the rulebook is ‘serious misconduct’. Without having a legal definition of what that means, it doesn’t sound like what happened in the changing rooms was serious misconduct – no actual physical confrontation, it wasn’t really one group of people harassing another person – they were all being dicks.

Kara is emailing the whole DIHL reminding them about appropriate behaviour. I’m following that up with a sterner email to the team and the individual involved.

The new whizz bang 40,000 $ lights that the rink is buying should be up by then. They arrived in a country a couple of weeks ago.

I’ve been in touch with the NZIHF President about the ANZAC ice hockey test.

DIHA will have to provide some support for the event. Off-ice officals, sound system etc. Sky TV is going to take care of a lot of the marketing, but obviously we’ll be pushing it as well. The more people we get into the building the better for the sport (I don’t think there’s any financial benefit for us, I think Sky is paying all the travel and filming costs, so the gate takings go back to them). There will probably be limits to what we can do on the night (it will be tied into the Asia Pacific Winter games so advertising, commercial opportunities might be out). Promoting our various activities, particularly beginner hockey, particularly kiwihockey will obviously be high on the agenda. I know the skating club also want to try and get on the ice and promote their activities.

There will probably be an ‘open rink’ the day after all around the country. So there will be open sessions like we had a couple of weeks ago to promote the sport and provide free ‘try it out’ sessions of ice hockey. We will be running these at Dunedin, the last ones we did were quite successful and led to a few people coming back and signing up for more.

This will all be discussed at the DIHA Board meeting coming up on Monday night. If anyone has any other thoughts on ways to get maximum benefit from this opportunity – promotion, fundraising, buildup, afterwards etc, post them here and I’ll take them along.
