MemberAs a fullstop to this, I’m just about to email the SIHL and inform them that Dunedin will not be putting in a SIHL SNC team in this year.
Four players and a goalie does not a team make, sadly.

MemberMy first contact game that I did was was Dunedin juniors against Alexandra juniors, couple of years ago. The Dunedin Juniors coach had them coming out hitting anything near the puck. I was having trouble telling which was a big hit, and which was a bad hit. Sent off a Dunedin player for pushing me away when I separated him from an opposition player that he’d come up swinging at (first contact game, first game misconduct given out, it was an exciting day).
It was then that I realised that if a player has a bad game, they can be benched, a goalie can be pulled, and a coach can go sit in the stands.
Referees, all they can do is try and get to the end of the game as best they can.

MemberHey,
I’m not going to go back over Sunday’s game, it was a rough game for everyone I didn’t enjoy it very much. I’ve emailed Marc and Blake about it.
If you think you can do a better job however…
The NZ Ice Hockey Federation Referee-in-chief will be conducting referee training on Saturday 20 June during the day (Thunder are playing that evening). People who complete the course will get their Level 1 referee certificate, which enables them to referee all our local games.
The DIHA is always looking for more referees, and once the course is completed you’ll be brought up to speed with a couple of practice games and then have the opportunity to work DIHL, high schools, club night, etc games, and then on to referee at Nationals and potentially National League games.
Learning to referee you will learn more about the rules in a few months than you’ve learnt in years of playing, and will also have a greater understanding of the game. You’ll be able to contribute back to the sport and earn money at the same time.
If you’re interested contact our referee-in-chief, Michael on referees@dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi.

Ryan’s earnest post somewhat rolled over your effort though.

MemberAh but you and I know some of those changes are controversial. I don’t know what Oak’s story is, but I presume he just moved?
Kyle
MemberAlso, see both Vince and Toby playing for Red Devils, and Dane Dunlop playing for Stampede. We are the controversial team, sending our players elsewhere.
Kyle
MemberTeams are up.
Here’s Thunder: http://www.nzihl.com/ThunderMain.html

MemberPond hockey is a completely non-contact sport. It’s not checking, it’s not non-checking either. It doesn’t relate to a checking conversation.
Kyle
MemberI suspect if it was a little kids tournament, we would put in place a referee, partially to stop the kids getting confused and help them getting into the right place. The referee could be any responsible person who can skate though, no need for them to be a qualified referee.

[/quote:3vtb967m]Pond hockey is supposedly non-contact.
[/quote:3vtb967m]Yes true. But it’s also not ice hockey.
Off topic, but I was floating the idea that we discussed a couple of years ago Ryan with having a pond hockey tournament, maybe as a pre-season fun activity cross ice at the rink, with some people and they liked the idea.
I’m going to keep kicking it around and see if we can get it going maybe for kids early next season – March or something. If it works we could make a whole weekend of it and do seniors as well.
Kyle
MemberI don’t know how many times I have to remind people as a referee that hockey is only ever non-checking, not not-contact. There is plenty of contact in non-checking ice hockey, not all of it is a penalty, some is good play, some is just incidental.
Non-contact is a meaningless phrase in ice hockey and people shouldn’t use it.

[/quote:3orbrwd6]Hell of a game and big series. I thought Ducks were going to steal it for a while there. Ducks lose it on the powerplay in that final game – unable to score on a couple of 5 on 3s, Red Wings were good but it’ll be interesting to see how they go against Chicago.

MemberSNC runs quite a bit differently than other SIHL teams. Practices don’t really relate to playing SIHL.
And people feel much more free to play one round and then not play the next. This will be the first tournament in ages that we haven’t been able to front with a team at all, which is a shame.

Understandably series is getting very tense, with G6 finishing with a wee to do involving Scott Neidermeyer.
(I will now ignore this forum for the next day or so in the hope I can watch the game tomorrow morning without knowing the result. Anyone who mentions the result at the coach training tonight, will feel my (rather insubstantial) wrath)

MemberDunedin has pulled out of this weekend’s tournament.
I’ve asked the manager if we can get all the players together to see where they stand in terms of committing for the rest of the season.
