Crosby turned down the captaincy throughout the regular season, despite being offered it several times.

I know very little about his motivational speeches, but he represents his team well to the media and is pretty upfront before and after the game.

About 10 times as well as Ovechkin, I’m sure hockey shows all over North America must be pulling their hair out at how difficult he is to interview during this marketing dream of a series. I saw his interview after game 2 the other night:

Q: So how about your goalie, he’s having a great postseason for a rookie?
A: I don’t want to talk about him, he’s not important.

(I think he meant, I don’t want to talk about him, he’s in the zone, don’t want to mess him up, the team needs to focus on game 3, but at a glance it sounded terrible!)

    He’s 22 in August.

I’m happy you’re having that conversation, you’re just not having it with me. The number of people in DIHA competitions is only one of the things that the DIHA is concerned with, and it’s only one of the things that should be considered when setting the membership levy.

If we don’t have qualified referees, we can’t have a DIHL. You can’t view the two things in isolation, they’re linked.

I was responding to Aaron’s point that people feel they pay for the referees. Referees don’t magically appear out of no where, we train them.

And Ryan, you can’t have a discussion about ‘how the DIHA finances its activities’ without being concerned about what the DIHA does for hockey.

We don’t train referees to look good, we train referees so that we can put competent qualified referees out on the ice for the games that we run. If you’re not concerned about that…

Players pay the referees for turning up on the night and doing the game as part of the DIHL. They don’t pay for their training, development, supervision etc etc as part of the DIHL. If players want decent refereeing, then they’re drawing benefits which aren’t provided by their DIHL registration. That’s why they ‘pay twice’.

Soon Aaron will pop up and confirm whether or not the finals are going to be on Sky this year.

With the university having bought out the Bowler we’ll need a new pub this year. Does the Cook have Sky? I haven’t been in there for a few years.

Club nights are run at below cost. We charge $5/game for junior members, $10 for seniors. The seniors come close to covering their costs, the juniors are a big loss leader. We got a grant to enable us to begin this programme this year.

Practices are run at below cost, we’ve got about $10000 in grants so far this year to reduce the costs of practices. Peewee practices will cost about $300/player for the club, players will be charged less than $200 for their 25 practices.

You couldn’t do these if you were a commercial operation, you become ineligible for grants.

Kiwihockey both us and the rink lose a pile on, it’s a future development and we both regard it as an important investment.

I know some people are listening to it on the radio. I use cifnation.com, which is great, but you have to wait about a day for the download to see the full game. Open regs at the moment still I think if anyone wants an invite.

As I’ve said many times, DIHL is not the only service we provide. Club nights, practices etc would all be more expensive if the DIHA was a commercial operation.

If you could come closer I WANT TO HIT YOU.

Though I guess it’s my fault for following a topic about the playoffs.

I don’t  dispute the fact that Detroit are a better team through lines 2 – 4. That’s only going to make a difference if Detroit get their game together, or the Ducks stop playing as well. Mason’s bad playoff doesn’t relate to any other goalie. Hiller got two shutouts against St Jose, the Sharks regularly outshot the ducks by about 50%, and he won game 2 in detroit in triple overtime. He’s certainly looking like a playoff goaltender at present.

The Capitals-Penguins series seems a bit over-hyped to me. OK, a lot over-hyped. I don’t see Capitals going all the way, even if they beat Penguins I’d expect Bruins to sort them out. If the penguins fire they should make it close, but ‘rookie goaltenders’ win Stanley Cups sometimes, Varlamov got them out of a big hole against New York, and Hiller monstered President’s Trophy winning San Jose.

Vancouver Chicago and Detroit Anaheim are both interesting series. Ducks making an improbable run on the back of a big rookie postseason from Hiller, and a top line that is probably the best in the league at the moment. Getzlaf working on a Conn Smythe trophy. Covering well for a fairly weak 2nd and 3rd line. Detroit aren’t firing, but if they do (I haven’t seen game 3 yet, so shush) they have the team on paper to beat the Ducks. I’m waiting for Osgood to tip back into regular season form and start letting in 3 – 4 goals a game.

With all respect to Vancouver, I hope Chicago gets through. That’s an exciting young team and they’ve revitalised hockey in Chicago, probably the best crowds all year. Be good to see their vision a couple of years ago with putting those young kids on the top line rewarded.

I ain’t seen Bruins/Canes at all yet, so no comment. Canes were big on the run into the playoffs, but lucky to get past New Jersey (Brodeur must still be pissed about that last goal) and Boston ate up Montreal.

I’d like to see Ducks win, but my pick for the final is Detroit/Boston.

Actually I should add, if we don’t get some confirmation from Thunder soon about their team, we’ll drop it to five teams and it’ll get cheaper. At present we’ve heard that there’s a team based on Thunder entering, but we haven’t had any confirmation from anyone.

Is it me or did the cost per team go up?

    Yes.

$700 was based on 4 games, 8 teams in 2 pools.

We have six teams, we’re playing a full round robin and a playoff game each at the end, so we had to increase the cost (I didn’t think people would want to play in 2 pools with only 3 teams in each.
