Yeah, I’ve heard it used to be done before.

It’s definitely something with people with more flexible hours than normal mortals, but I figure we should be able to get 15 people or so down there, chuck a couple of suckers in goal, work up a sweat, back to work.

Chris, I’ve told you before, I don’t like it when you whisper in my ear. People talk.

A single round robin for a 6 team competition takes 5 weeks. A double round robin (each team plays each other twice) takes 10 weeks. Triple would take 15 weeks. Final is one week on top of that, semi-finals another. I have schedules for 4, 6, 8, and 10 team competitions of various lengths which I drew up when I did DIHL stuff.

6 teams should be no problem. 8 teams might be possible, but it could also be a stretch, and would take more work from an organisational point of view.

But it would certainly be possible to run two dihls – one finishing in mid-June, and then another starting later – possibly even after high schools finish in late August, finishing in mid-October. One of the issues which has to be considered is ice time. On top of everything else that ran last year, there’s a small oldtimers competition being run this year, which will take a couple of hours a week, on and off, so time needs to be found for that. Post-August is much easier to fit stuff in as high schools are no longer using all of Wednesday.

There is also no guarantee that the DIHL will be able to be run on one night. If Thunder practices continue to happen on Tuesday night, finishing at 8.30, it’s entirely likely that two games could happen that night, and then any other games would probably have to be on a Sunday. Alternatively you could consider having all the games on Sunday evening, but SIHL games will be on Sunday during the day, so that might be too much for people, and I don’t think Sunday is as popular. Again, post-high schools is easier, as then we have all Wednesday evening to work with.

Unrelated but possibly of interest, I’m considering testing out running a weekday lunch time game, on Fridays. Carpools leaving university, 3 x 15 minute periods, probably just a referee, no scorebox, try and get people into it regularly. Still toying with it, but hopefully it should be at discounted ice rate so could be $6 or something like that, or maybe 5 weeks for $30. I figure lots of university lecturers and students can take two hour lunch breaks. It might also work in with Kings High School, I know they sometimes come down for practices with a period matched up with their lunch hour.

Well, if you are keen I can take something to the committee for you. There’s a committee meeting tonight, but more realistically, the DIHA would want to have something definite to tell people come registration time, which is mid to late February.

So that means next committee meeting, which will be 9th February, after the AGM.

Things we would need to know would be:

    1. Number of teams.
    2. Cost per player/team (if you allow full teams to have a different price).
    3. Start date, end date. There is no ice from 6 April until 3 May with worlds and curling, so a start date in early-May might be the best we can do
    4. What sort of DIHL it will be – just a B grade, open grade etc.
    5. Who will be running it.

Also, the committee will probably also require that the DIHL make a small profit – about $40/game or so. That would probably mean that teams should have 12 people on their roster as a minimum (12 x 2 teams x $10 – $240, minus $150 ice and $50 officials leaves $40). If my proposal tonight is accepted, this money will help cover for any shortfall in funding for the pro coach. So that should be worked into the plan.

Anyway, apparently Dave Craw wants to help, and I’m still keen to organise at least the B-grade if there is someone to do the A-grade.

It would be entirely possible for you to just offer to do a B grade, and the A grade could be left on the table for someone to pick up, on the condition that they followed your model (weeks, cost etc).

Or alternatively you could run an open DIHL, which I think a lot of people would like to have again, where the teams are mixed together from everyone, beginner to ice black.

There’s a committee meeting this coming Monday, there’s no need to come along to that but it would be good to know what you were willing to do Kara, so we know what we need to find to fill in the gaps.

    Cheers,
    Kyle

Good game. Czechs were robbed of that first goal by the referee, but Canada were in a different class.

Nice to see top level games played under IIHF rules. I’m going to download some more for our referees – thought the referees missed a few calls. Four officials though, so still of limited help.

    How might one do that?

If you do a google search on it it will turn up a bunch of stuff. I was going to try it, but then found cif so started using that, so not sure how easy it is.

try http://www.proxyshell.com or similar (not sure if the trial version works or if you have to pay with that one).

CIF Forum might be torrenting it. There’s a pre-tournament game between Canada and Sweden which was played earlier today that’s posted up there now for download.

I suspect Ryan, that both you and I would have to knee cap quite a long list of people before we’d be at the top of the goalkeeping list.

The U18 coaching position is still advertised on nzicehockey.co.nz. But yes, the U20s are out sadly.

Can anyone give me the inside word on what’s going on with the DIHL this year?
    [/quote:3eet5vtf]

I can give one side of it.

After our somewhat bizarre meeting with Larry N, the committee hasn’t explored anything further. I think it would be fair to say, after informal discussions with other members of the committee, even if Larry N did come back and offer to run the DIHL again, we would say ‘no’. To quote one member of the committee: ‘over my dead body will that man run the DIHL again…’.

At present, we are hoping that some good kind fools… er members, will step up and offer to run the DIHL. At present nothing is being done beyond me posting here and saying “c’mon, someone must want to do it”. I’m currently busy with the logo, and I’ve just moved onto trying to find a way to keep professional coaching going next year.

The AGM is coming up early next year, there are a number of non-committee posts which we will want to fill there, one being DIHL coordinator/s, so that will be raised at that meeting. If we get no one there, then I will start hitting people up to take a leadership role in organising the league. That will be February though, which leaves little time for planning, depending on when people want the competition to start.

As a side note, I got dates recently for Division III worlds, and the masters curling, both of which will be held on the main ice rink here. There will be basically no ice at all available for us in all of April, and the first week of May. The DIHL might have to start in May as a result (this might also help with the ‘not having anyone to organise it time running short issue’, as it would be pushed back a couple of months from when it normally starts.

There are some changes at the club at the committee level which are going to hopefully make things better across the board next year. At the AGM we’ll be pushing a new constitution (the old one doesn’t make much sense any more, and it’s not followed very well) written by Paul Roth. We’ll be changing from a waffley committee to a Board of Directors. In general, the structure will be a bit more ‘corporate’ (I say this for want of a better word, the club isn’t going more corporate, we’re just going to try and run it better). Amongst this is an intention to set clearer guidelines for what the club wants and provide more support for people coming into the club to try and help doing things (such as the DIHL).

As an example (and this is my example, such a thing won’t be definite until the new board meets), the board might set guidelines for the DIHL, such as:

    1. Providing ice hockey for people of all levels of ability.
    2. Providing a social sporting environment.
    3. Returning a surplus for the DIHA.

On top of the DIHL guidelines that were written last year (modified somewhat?), this will give a clearer indication of the purpose of the competition and how to run it.

Then at the end of the DIHL season the board would receive a report from those people that run it, and make any modifications to those goals.

In the background of the structural changes is a desire to get more people involved in running the various parts of the club in meaningful ways, and widen the number of people involved in running the club (without them having to go to a silly meeting each month), but provide them with clearer guidelines and support so they’re not just dumped in it.

In conclusion: Someone needs to take leadership of pulling together a group to run the DIHL or volunteering to organise it themselves. People like Chris who are willing to manage a team or similar are very welcome, but the club will need that DIHL leadership to step forward.

There is now no game this Sunday 30 November because of the ice show. Back on next week I presume.
