    I will play.

Are you organising referees or are you going to ask me?

That last photo, looking up at you from the door Joe. That’s such a Bode photo.

Hopefully she’ll work all out butts off when she gets back!

Yeah, there’s a prem grade, SNC grade, peewees, midgets and (I think) juniors.

Though in reality, the only grade that’s ever played has been SNC, and everyone has just played that. Hopefully this year we’ll get some more teams coming in – it may be that the midgets get to play other midget teams. If not, then yes, you should look for an SNC team.

I’m curious to see who might be organising another SNC team. If the prems are entering in the prem grade, and the Beasts into SNC, then there’s probably a space for another SNC team at least.

To reach Jackie Christos, who is the Coordinator of the Dunedin Thunder, and Stephen Christos, who is the manager, email christos01@xtra.co.nz.

I think Steve Jackson is dealing with international type enquiries at present, as he has a better idea of what level people overseas are playing at. Steve Jackson is steve.jackson@otago.ac.nz. Kevin, since you didn’t post your email address, you should probably just email him directly.

The prem series would take out 30 players. So it would kill any A grade similar to what we’ve had previously, as we’d lose pretty much the top half of the grade.

You could still split the grades, if you could get 8 teams – move the split slightly lower than previously. You might have trouble with high school teams and whatnot of course, but I’m sure that it could be worked around.

I’d suggest, if you could get 8 teams, split into two pools, 3 weeks roundrobin. Top two teams from each pool go into a top pool, another round robin (including playing the other team from their original pool), bottom two teams from each pool go into a bottom pool. Then play 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8.

That gives you a 7 week competition, everyone plays 5 different teams, two of them twice, and means stronger/weaker teams have a better second half. Requires 8 teams though.

    Kara,

    I’m not offering to help.

My serious suggestion is – the planning meeting last year set a draft timetable, which included a premiere series running at the same time as the DIHL – starting in march, and going until the end of the 1st term.

If that prem series is still happening, there’d be no point running an A grade – or more specifically, there’d probably be no point running a split grade. I’d just suggest running a dihl which has everyone who isn’t in the prem series.

I’m not sure who would know the answer to that, but I’d suggest sending Jenel an email and asking her if that’s still going to happen. She wasn’t at the strategic meeting so she might give a different answer.

Dunedin Penguins and Brisbane just played a great game, which Brisbane won with a lone goal with 10 minutes to go. Both teams had a couple of good chances, including Penguins having the puck in the net a split second after the ref blew the whistle because he lost sight of it.

Wheeler played a great game with two big saves – a blind lying down flop on a rebound, and a big wraparound wave with the left foot.

Dunedin Penguins won both their games I saw today well. Larry Wheeler pulling off some big saves in net and a couple of good forward lines scoring well.

Tomorrow morning at 11.30 they play the Brisbane Rusty Blades who are probably the top team, should be a good game.

Stefan King played in goal for the DOA team, which is a mixture of canterbury and southern people, including some dunedinites. I think he saved at least a couple, but let in 14.

Ryan, might be worth taking out that spring dihl news once it’s officially announced, and making thunder the big headline.

Phil Handcock sent it around this morning to referees.

    I presume it’s final.

5:45 Melbourne Nite Owls    v          Vintage Reds

I’m not sure why they didn’t stretch it out some more and have the games on the Sunday as well.

I believe the Brisbane Rusty Blades are supposed to be very good, so those games might be worth watching. They games are 3 x 15 minute periods, non-checking, no slap shots.

Coaching coordinator is Larry Wheeler. coaching@dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi should reach him. DIHL teams don’t have practices, but the age grades do, weeknights.

I’d presume if the premiere series happened again, the DIHL would be everyone left – an open competition.

You couldn’t take 30 players out of the A grade and run it, there’s only ever been about 50 at most players in it.

That’s the Dunedin Ice Hockey League. it will start at the same time (ish) – we wait for the varsity students to come back, which is end of February, then there’s a couple of weeks of pulling it together, so mid-March it will likely start then.

I’m not sure if Thunder players will be playing in the DIHL this year. That’s something to be negotiated between the two.

I believe there won’t be a Sunday game this weekend as the rink is being prepared for curling. Graham will no doubt confirm.
