It’s a tough logistical task running the marathon events. Getting the rink to staff the place overnight can be tough too. I’m good for 8 hours of ice time though minimum
[/quote:38plhd5i]Down here, the only thing that pays better than ice hockey in terms of bringing money into the rink, is social skating. But because we have two ice rinks, for special occasions they’ll put social skating on the curling rink and just re-spray it when it’s done. They could also move figure skaters onto there. They did that for friendship, they’ll do it again for nationals. If we booked ice for 24 hours, I bet they’d give us a really good price, because normally the hours 11pm to 6am aren’t used at all – that’s free additional income, the only cost of which is lighting and having a staff member there who can groom. There are a couple of ice hockey players who can do the grooming, so even if they give us a discount rate, it could all be profit for them.
I still think it should be done for a ‘good cause’ – either inside or outside the club. That way you can get sponsorship and look at most or all of the money that people pay in ice time being profit.

MemberBoth games last night were real close, with goalies being pulled in the last minute to try and get draws.

I’m picking this to be a big game, and I’m going with Sharks to win it 4-2.[/quote:kahpe7m1]John McGlashan take it 2-1. A controversial first goal which I awarded on a ‘did it or didn’t it go into the net off the crossbar’ call, to Wadworth, and then a nice goal to Blake Sinclair off two assists, before Sharks got one back from Sam Smith off Zane, but were unable to get the tying goal. Johnnies missed the open net on a length of the ice shot, which coasted calmly through the crease. That sees Johnnies through to the final next week, Sharks will play off for third against the Bullfrogs.

[/quote:kahpe7m1]Topsy turvy game. Bullfrogs took some early leads in the first two periods, but were 3-2 going into the last, when both teams traded two goals – Bullfrogs tying it up twice. Play of the day, Simon Christos skating right down to the goal line (the puck was literally on it when he shot) and then somehow finding a hole to get the puck into the net through (off?) Bullfrogs goalie Schuck. First Bullfrogs goal kindly provided by Phantoms player King, who knocked a Kemp pass that I was never going to get to into his own net. He celebrated in style too.
Final next week.

MemberWinning more games would help me sleep at night. The outcomes of my random picks… just done for fun and all your entertainment.
Though winning players and parents certainly like gloating when I get them wrong. Good to see that the competition is close and it’s not always easy to pick a winner.

MemberMy original thoughts on the matter, which I’ll repost below, were that you’d run it as 24 sequential hockey games – taking an hour each. You could keep a total score from each bench for the 24 hours, but essentially it’d just be 24 games. That might be different from what Ryan was thinking, which might be a straight 24 hour game.
Here’s my original post earlier this year:
My second idea was after watching a heap of people produce thousands of cheese rolls to scrape together a few hundred dollars. I was wondering if the next time the club needed to do a big fundraising (for players heading overseas internationally or something) if we should play a 24 hour game of hockey. It’d run as 24 sequential games, just rope teams in and they pay their money, play three games (or more) during the 24 hour period. If each player paid $10/game, even if we had to pay full ice costs you’d earn $50/hour. But if we could get the ice rink to give us a discount for booking a 24 hour session, or get sponsorship (or both), you might look at earning about $3-6000, before you start selling food and raffles and whatnot at the same time.
You’d keep the score ticking over so at the end of the 24 hours it’d be 104 – 86 or something, but you’d match the teams up – so the peewees would play each other three times, the midgets would do the same, some DIHL teams would play a round robin within their grades etc etc.
And it’d be great publicity for ice hockey, we’d be a good shot for TV news on TV1 or TV3 – memories of those telethon things that were on in the 80s.

MemberActually, if you look back at the picks, I never pick against my own team (which hasn’t proven to be very good for my picks record this season
” title=”Sad” /> ). So if we ignore those ones, I’ve got both your games wrong against the Sharks. Last night was a good close game – 2-1 to you guys. The first game, well, it helps when you bring big Toby Schuck in between the posts rather than the rookie goalie you did have lined up!

[/quote:196o2mo4]Yeah. Though it was an idea for future fundraising that I raised to see what people thought of it. So far I haven’t heard of a cause which would draw the sponsors enough to make it worthwhile. I was originally thinking of fundraising for a team to travel internationally. I thought it could raise up to $5000.
Though that 24 hour walk for cancer research thing would be a logical thing to think about if we were to think outside the club.
I don’t think the nights would actually be that hard. I came up with a draw model for it which only required 5 teams to get through those 6 hours, and no team played two hours in a row.

go forth and round up people.

MemberSpeaking of goalies.
Bode is away next Monday so powerskating won’t be powerskating, it’ll be a pickup game.
Games are obviously a hundred times better with talented goalies standing on the ice waving their arms around and occasionally sitting down and calling it ‘butterfly’ and whatnot. So if two goalies would be good enough as to volunteer their 9 – 10pm, that’d be great.
I’m not sure what the story will be with cost for the game. I presume it won’t come from the powerskating money, so it’ll be a standard $10 each. There will be a referee, dunno about someone in the scorebox.

MemberA grade picks:
Right, we’re almost at the finish line, it’s in sight, there’s just the home stretch to go.
Let’s see where the teams are and how the table looks.
Phantoms are still on top at 7 points. They’re playing in the final next week, but they don’t yet know who against. A win tonight will see them secure first place and home bench advantage.
John McGlashan OB are in second on six points. If they win tonight, they’re in the final, if they win and Phantoms lose, they’re top spot.
Sharks are in third on four points. If they win tonight, they’ll finish equal with Johnnies OB, and it’ll come down to goal difference. I don’t have the complete figures in front of me, but I suspect they’ll finish out ahead, so heaps of motivation for them to win tonight and sneak into the final.
Bullfrogs are in fourth, and can’t make the final. Boohoo.
Tonight, first up will see Sharks take on John McGlashan. Last time the two teams played Johnnies took it 4-0, but they also pulled in Toby Schuck as their goalie for that game, so tonight’s game will be really interesting. MemberI’ve inquired as to whether or not it’s available. If it is I’ll book it and let you guys sort out getting people there.
As it’s a Wednesday night I can’t make it, so you’ll have to be all responsible in my absence.

MemberWhat, you have to run from the rink to the nearest fast food place, with Bode on your tail?
Bode’s pretty good on blades. I reckon she’d knock you down way before you got near any stinkin’ half cooked chicken.

[/quote:3ktvydco]There’s plenty of goals there Aaron, they can always bring a third one on and squish you all in.
I was wondering the other day about how goalies find team practises where often their role is just to stand in front of the goal and get shot at. I’m not sure what Jenel is doing, but often practices that I’ve seen previously don’t seem to give much training to goalies.
Made me wonder if the southern region should put some thought into a ‘goalie camp’ and focusing some coaching resources on time on specific things that goalies might need training for. There is a school of thought around that goalies are rather important to the team, though the Ducks are working to disprove this theory.
"Joe":3ktvydco wrote:I blame the Ducks defense for the low numbers of shots on net. Sometimes I have to take extreme measures just make sure our guest goalies stay awake during games. Know what I mean? I’m not coughing up that puck in the slot due to lack of skill — I had your interest in mind. And I agree, 2 goalies are enough for the prem practices. Are you traveling to Gore with us? Do you like long walks in the rain too?
[/quote:3ktvydco]That’s not extreme. Simon Christos took a shot on Aaron during the Easton Cup. Aaron wasn’t fully awake either, it took him a second to move and stop it.
Warm ups before the game? Meh, why bother when you can do it _during_ the game.

MemberThe Dunedin League is really short of A grade goalies – this is the grade that our Prem goalies play in. We’ve been covering four teams this year with only three goalies, since the Juniors goalie got a job on Tuesday nights and left a team short. We’ve had a couple of good goalies leave in the past couple of years.
That competition finishes in 8 days, but it should run again later this year – I’m hoping someone will jump forward to get the A grade up and running come July after uni holidays.
And the beasts already have two goalies, but the Ducks could sure do with one in the SIHL. We’ve played 5 games so far this year without, and one game with. 5-1 record though, which isn’t too bad. Aaron’s right, sometimes we keep the shots right down, but we had a good tournament against Alex the other week.
I was going to ask how come you played for a Canterbury team in the Easton Cup, but are playing Stampede. I guess that answers the question.
There are sure to be some pick up games in the next while to get you on the ice. Auckland Uni are bringing down an SNC A team in late June for a couple of games which we haven’t sorted teams yet for.
