There haven’t been any new teams added to this division. There have been 7 teams in it for the last few years going back to when the team won the division in 2008!
It appears the format might be changed a little this year. It was divided into two pools in Turkey 2010 with the top four playing off for the medals. It was a straight round robin this year in Mexico.
It apparently depends on the Organising committee but usually money will determine the schedule, especially considering that the tournament is over New Year!
We’ll have to wait till Sept to find out what the game schedule is. The Organising committee has to put forward a game schedule, which is then confirmed by all of the attending teams.
I wouldn’t be surprised if North Korea don’t attend after recently withdrawing from two IIHF tournaments.
The 2011 team played a complete round robin series, I think it comes down to the organising committee.
Could be easily resolved if DPRK do a no-show! I think that could be very likely too.
Dunedin’s facilities are way better than some of the rinks I’ve been too.
2012 Under 20 tournament is to be hosted by Dunedin from 29th Dec 11 until 4th Jan 12. More info re this tournament on IIHF website.

The New Zealand Under 20 Ice Hockey Team’s game vs Mexico will be aired on Channel 23 on Freeview and 110 on Sky on Sunday May 22nd, 2011 at 2:30pm.
The next few games will provide some insight into how the tournament will end up with AUS v BEL tonight and then the SRB – MEX and NZL – BEL tomorrow.

Didn’t Serbia just come down from Div 1 this year? Serbia aren’t the power house that they used to be and having already lost to Belgium, they will need to pull it out of the hat for the rest of the tourny.
Good to hear that the boys kept fighting til the end and scored a few in the third. Keep it up boys.
Could be another interesting tournament. Think everyone will watch face book overnight to see what the boys say on it.

But they have a huge budet for advertising which would soak up the extra $50 and possibly have a lower quality game!
I’d rather see us develop closer ties with the Aussies and maybe some Pacific Rim countries to play against.
There is already some interest from the Adelaide AIHL team to come over pre or post season to play against teams here. It’s cheaper to come here than go over and play against the AIHL expansion team in the Perth.
Maybe an AWIHL team could be enticed over here too!
Taipei expressed an interest in bringing an age grade team down here too.
I noticed that there aren’t any NZIHL games scheduled to be played in the regions when this debacle is being played. I wonder if that means that there will be some games against the ‘locals’!
I still think we are better finding our own overseas competition to play against our teams, like the HC Storm team a couple of years ago.
