    New Zealand Under-18 National Team ? 7
    Ireland Under-18 National Team ? 2

Same as the day before the New Zealand team preformed the Haka before the game but not on the ice, they had found a corner of the rink that was visible by the Ireland supporters, and the whole rink.

First period saw New Zealand start strong, quickly finding their stride and out skating there opponents who looked tired from their tough game against Mexico the previous night.

Southern player Luke Pickering started NZ?s scoring from a rebound shot off the pads from Conner Harrison, New Zealand kept Ireland under pressure peppering the goalie from all angles, New Zealand managed to finally find the back of the net again from a nice cross ice pass from Todd Elder to Gareth Lloyd putting it in. New Zealand showed that they were there to play and out shot Ireland 25 to 4

    Second period
The new Zealand team started out the same way they finished off in the first. Some poor discipline saw 3 minor penalties in a row giving Ireland some momentum, although we regained full strengh Ireland capitalized on the momentum and scored their first goal this led New Zealand to become flat footed and they allowed Ireland to skate with the puck, this allowed Ireland to score the equalling goal only 5 mins later, the boys did not take this lightly and stepped up there game and scored with 30 seconds to go a nice rebound goal by Gareth Lloyd in front of the net. New Zealnad lost the period 2-1

    Third period
In the changing rooms was a feeling that they knew what to do to get the job done and New Zealand went out the same way as the first, skating, a nice pass up the boards from Regan Wilson to Conner Harrison skated right past the defenseman with speed to score, a good forechecking shift from Quinn Drake, Remy Sandoy created a nice turn over for Dane Dunlop to skate out of the corner to score momentum still heavily in our favor a hard working shift from Dale Bailey started the play to Logan Johnston who made a pass though the defender to Josh Greenwoods stick who had been shooting from everywhere and finally found the back of the net . A couple of reckless roughing penilties nearly let Ireland back in the game but with some great penalty kill from Jamie Lawrence and Kahu Joyce did not allow Ireland back into the game. Some good hard individual work from Remy Sandoy potted New Zealands final goal for the game

Some great saves from Joe Gaynor never let Ireland back in the game and Nick Gloags impressive physical dominace and Dylan Dicksons hard working forecheck kept New Zealand looking good through out the game

We out shot Ireland 63 to 21

    New Zealand Under-18 National Team ? 9
    Israel Under-18 National Team ? 8

Tonight, New Zealand played their first game of the 2010 IIHF Under-18 World Championships and earned a hard fought victory over a spirited Israeli team.

New Zealand came into the game well prepared, and had a good understanding of the task at hand. The warm-up was performed at a good level of intensity, and the players were focused. Since the IIHF Directorate decided that we could not perform a Haka on the ice, one was done in the dressing room prior to emerging for the first period. The Israeli team room was right next to ours, and they surely heard the Kiwis bellow out their fierce calls.

The game began with full intensity, with Luke Pickering firing a waist-high snapshot goal to the blocker side of the Israeli goaltender. Israel tied the game up soon after, but New Zealand replied with two straight goals from Remy Sandoy, thanks to some good set-up work from Pickering, Jermaine Joyce, and Gareth Lloyd. Israel potted another quick goal, and again New Zealand replied with two more goals from Pickering and Connor Harrison. With strong defence from Todd Elder, Ryan Currid and Regan Wilson, the period ended with New Zealand well ahead at 5-2.

The second period was the total opposite of the first. New Zealand came out with sluggish legs and ill-discipline. Israel scored two minutes into the period after capitalizing on a quick turnover in the neutral zone. With a steady stream of Kiwi players sent to the penalty box, Israel scored two more power play goals. The score was drawn 5-5, and the third period was yet to come.

The third period was a see-saw battle, with goals exchanged twice. Israel went into the lead early on, and New Zealand replied with Harrison pouncing on a rebound. Israel scored once again, and Lloyd tied it up once more. With 5 minutes left, Lloyd was at it again, dangling his way through the Israeli defence to finally put New Zealand ahead 8-7. Harrison once again potted another one to make it 9-7. Although Israel worked hard to narrow the gap with another goal, the defence of Jamie Lawrence, Wilson and Joyce held strong. Josh Greenwood, Dylan Dickson, Dane Dunlop, Todd Elder and Logan Johnson shut down the final seconds, and New Zealand won 9-8.

This game was a total team effort from start to finish. Newcomers Quinn Drake, Justin Fuller, Tom Wilson, Joe Gaynor, Nick Gloag and Dale Bailey all made successful IIHF World Championship debuts, and will build on this towards our next game versus Ireland.

New Zealand just took the first step of four towards the gold medal. More consistency and hard work will be needed to succeed versus a gritty and determined Irish team.

What is everyones pick for final position, I expect that we will be second behind Mexico.

The big unknown is Israel, back in IIHF tournys after several years off.

In the last couple of years we’ve struggled for 2 periods against SA to overcome the neutral zone trap but scored a few in the third.

Ireland will not be easy either.

Final game will only have a couple of goals in it.

Think that it would be a good start to have home/away series with the lower placed AIHL teams to gauge the level of competition.

It’s cheaper for teams to fly across the ditch than to Perth.

The Aussie president mentioned that he wanted a summer league for the 18/20 age grade players, with the eastern states and a NZ team (6 team). Games would be played over several extended weekend.

It still comes down to the money.

Think that Jordan will have another year in the U19 grade, he’s still able to play IIHF U18 next year.

Growing hockey is always an interesting topic.

I see that no one has mentioned that the NZIHF are starting a travelling U16 tournament in 2010. It is to be played on a home/away basis with the home team billeting the away team.

If Dunedin has sufficient players in this age grade and according to some of the comments posted on this forum about how the Dunedin kids are or have cleaned up the SIHL (in this age grade), then these kids would qualify for this tournament.

It would therefore make sense for Dunedin to enter a team before it all starts?

This series will also provide a number of fringe people the opportunity to participate eg refs, coaches, managers etc who need experience but have no opportunity to do so except for in the NZIHL or at Nationals.
