Yes the gun has been jumped, but the enthusiasm of the Aussies shows a dramatic shift in thinking and that’s a good thing. Hopefully this will all just gestate quietly in the background until a formal plan and announcement can be made.

I think the Ice Blacks having their own haka is a really nice idea

in reply to: AIHL/NZIHL merger suggestion #17080

    Gidday,

the suggestion I made on twitter was in response to one from the AIHL asking where the next expansion team should come from.

When I was in Australia earlier this year, there was a lot of talk about that next team coming from NZ, but I don’t personally believe that is good for the game here because I don’t want to see the best NZIHL players taken out of the competition.

My personal belief is that the NZ game can grow faster than it currently is in Australia and that our league can supersede theirs in quality.

Yes there are a number of issues which need to be sorted BEFORE this can happen, but that tweet is all about getting other people thinking and making sure we don’t sell the quality of our teams and competition short.

I’m not saying this should happen now, but if the game is to be taken seriously in the years to come, then an australasian league would be one way to go.

From the people I have spoken with it would probably run as described above where a team would travel across the ditch and play all their games within a couple of weeks before returning. The competition could be split into 3 conferences where the teams play teams outside their conference home and away once, and the teams inside their conference home and away in double headers – followed by a finals series.

It’s unrealistic now, but a goal like this can change the game as much as any other factor. You could call it a dream goal, but if it means better lights, better facilities, better resources and financing for players – it’s worth at least thinking about.

Amazing result for the Ice Blacks. Really amazing to be here for it and share in this piece of NZ ice hockey history.

I hope everyone will enjoy the documentary when it is finished in around 8 weeks and you can all see for yourselves just how well our boys played.

Did you watch the entire game?

They were addressed. Many more than you can imagine. Feedback has been excellent from ice hockey and non-ice hockey fans alike.

We placed a camera in the corner of the rink to cover the blindspot.

It wasn’t possible to be back any further for the wide shot, perhaps you could write to Paradise Rinks about that?

Tracking a puck traveling at over 100kmph with each pass while maintaining framing, focus, exposure and colour balance in mixed lighting is quite a task.

The two centre ice cameras cover the same shot, a tight and a wide, there is only one cutaway camera.

There aren’t going to be any more cameras added unless the budget goes over half a million dollars. So please try to be realistic.

I completely understand where the advice is coming from, it’s appreciated, but most of it we’re already aware of, or were aware of before we even shot the final.

Please understand that the NZIHL is not the NHL. The NHL has had a 16 camera mandatory minimum since 2005/06. We have 3. We cannot hope to recreate what they can achieve.

What seems simple to the viewer is in fact quite difficult in practice.

Every element you add costs thousands of dollars, a proper EVS replay system costs hundreds of thousands.

I have no doubt the coverage will improve with time if we can garner sponsorship, but much of that will come down to the skill of the operators as opposed to lack of planning.

The best thing any of us can do is circulate the links and sing the praises of hockey, because our coverage is much better than most other minor league footage we could find and we need a positive vibe going forward to get the sponsorship to move hockey forward in this country.

All feedback is in our production report.

in reply to: NZIHL Grand Final 2010 – Highlights #16422

It really isn’t possible to follow the refs when the puck is more important.

We have 3 manned cameras, the NHL has a minimum of 8 and as many as 30 at any one game.

There is always a place for volunteers and we will be asking for them, but in terms of the core crew for a commercial television production, the broadcaster and sponsors will always require that they are professional, ie “paid”. This creates expectation of services rendered etc and limits people not showing up or jeopardising the production through lack of knowledge. We have to build our budgets around that.

    Hi guys,

yes we’ve looked into scoreboard links, they do exist, but then you need the correct datalink software with the correct gfx software that works with the right vision mixer and many of these are now out of date with older scoreboards! Does my head in.

But we will find a solution for this.

One of the major issues we face is manpower, it’s expensive. To make any of these productions viable we have to keep the crew to a minimum. The reality is that the budget stops adding up very quickly when you add one guy for this or one guy for that.

Anyway, here are some interviews that didn’t make it on to TV – http://www.youtube.com/user/SlapshotProds

Thanks for the feedback, it’s much appreciated.

Most of what you’ve mentioned went into our post game analysis of the production and will be sorted out for the future, but I’ll give you a little insight into why some things were the way they were.

Firstly the powerplay clocks, we built gfx for this, but did not use them. The clocks were a real problem throughout, so in the end the powerplay clocks were dropped because we simply couldn’t keep track of them. We know how important they are and will definately feature in future broadcasts should we attract sponsors.

Secondly the camera angles, we weren’t able to set up upstairs at paradise, so had to use scaffolding. The limited space meant this was right next to the ice which created a blindspot. It meant we had no choice but to cut to the corner camera when our centre ice cameras couldn’t see the puck.

Overall I thought it looked pretty good and if we can find sponsors the coverage will improve with dedicated equipment and crew.

Please pass the word around for people to mysky the remaining replays if they can.

in reply to: NZIHL online survey #16412

That’s exactly the kind of feedback we’re looking for. Please copy and paste that into the survey.

in reply to: NZIHL online survey #16410

    Hi,

to clarify, the survey is to get an idea of who likes hockey in NZ and get some feedback on the league. We can all guess who the audience is, but we don’t know for sure.

Basically the more people who respond, the more likely we are to get sponsorship.

Please pass it around to any fans of the game, whether they like the NZIHL or not. The more people who respond the better it will be for NZ ice hockey.
