I can assure you any coverage comes down to money and if it isn’t there, coverage doesn’t happen.

Consistency is an issue, but only because the money isn’t there to sustain it. Having worked at Ch9 years ago, I can tell you that there’s usually enough to make what is effectively a ‘pilot’, but if more money isn’t injected, it cannot be sustained.

The same issue exists at the moment. Yes we’ve covered the NZIHL Grand Final, but it was very expensive. The ice hockey community needs to put the feelers out for sponsors if any more coverage is to be had. You certainly can’t just expect it.

In regards to the lighting, yes the lights could be brighter, but I was referring to the colour of the lights. Some were yellow and some were blue. It’s very hard to spot with the naked eye, but shows up much more on television. It doesn’t matter which they are, just as long as they are all the same.

In regards to these problems and the netting, we cannot do it all alone. If people within the ice hockey community show some initiative in solving these issues in their own areas it is a massive help.

We would love to cover the internationals, including NZ in Australia in April, but it all comes down to sponsorship. Putting anything on TV is not cheap and certainly not as easy as getting out your handycam.

Filming ice hockey in New Zealand is a new experience for the entire production crew, you’ll notice when you watch the final that the coverage improves throughout as the operators adjust to the pace of the game.

There are other little issues to deal with as well, if anyone has any sway over the following

    – The rink lights need to match. We had some problems with lights being either yellow or blue for the final, quite important that they’re all the same in the future.

    – Netting. While the birds nest is the norm in NZ, it is not overseas and obviously gets in the way of our cameras. The introduction of glass at all rinks will obviously be a big improvement, but so is educating new people about the puck, the same as a cricket ball.

    Hi guys,

yes more NHL will be on screens and it started with the coverage of the NHL finals during 2010.

There will be more coverage for this coming season and Sky will be monitoring ratings. Obviously the more people watching the better.

This will effect coverage of the NZ game as well, so get your mates watching. We are indeed intending to make an ice hockey magazine show for the next NZ season, but making TV is expensive and we need to get sponsors on board.

In the meantime, please tune in to the NZIHL Grand Final and let Sky know you want more by watching.

This is true. We got the call an hour before the program was to go to air.

Only a portion of the program was effected, but after extended conversations with Sky we’ve decided to put our best face forward and completely re-record the commentary.

Everyone will be informed as to the new airing dates in the next couple of weeks.

I may not make a back up goalie promo, but it would make an interesting story if we get shows off the ground.

I’m glad people like it. The whole clip is cut quite fast to match the high action of ice hockey. Most of those falls were caused by tripping or prior impact which simply didn’t fit in once the impact with the ice was cut to the music.

You’re quite right that we’ll be able to make better promos with more vision.

    Hi everyone,

I was down in the South Island to shoot some players and shot some game footage seeing as I was there.

We cut this promo together with the additional vision just as something little to show potential sponsors. It turned out alright, so we’re going to provide it to Sky TV to use as a Sky Sports Extra.

We cannot mix vision and formats for broadcast, so using the stickcam vision, even though it is awesome, would never be an option.

We are open to any ideas anyone may have, but please keep budget in mind and know that handycams are not an option. For those who know about TV tech specs, we have to shoot all our vision in raw 10bit 1080 HD, 25fps with 4:2:2 colour.
