What i am saying the vpatrol is that if all goes well then we may indeed find ourselves with a huge growth in the sport. There is a good chance this may be brilliant and we need to be prepared to deal with that fact, even if we dont like the way they have gone about this with all their dodgy shinanigans and not caring a toss about the game in NZ
thirteenMembermate i am a lyrical genius! plus im cool! he’ll listen
thirteenMemberOn the other hand though, if they make a good game of it, it could have huge benefits for the game in New Zealand. I might attempt to contact aaron miller, with him being the captain and all, tell him our concerns and ask tell him that we need the best possible hockey they can play for the whole game every game or else our development cpuld suffer? good idea or no?
thirteenMemberjust read that article! wanker! if he does that to our ice hockey im going to go kung fu on his ass!
thirteenMemberCheers aaron
Need a goalie toothirteenMemberTo be fair the refs do a reasonable job, not good/great but reasonable. They have their good games and their bad games, their good calls and their bad calls, they get abused and they get cheered (albeit occasionally).
In todays NZIHL the referees cant just do a reasonable job, they need to do a good job, some referees will freely admit that they could be better, i know each time i ref i try and improve, so does kyle and so do others. SOme referees, though, will not admit they need to get better, nor will they admit they made a bad call. I generally dont have a problem with a ref making a bad call if a) he is consistently bad and/or b) (and this gets contradictory) learns from his mistake and doesnt make it again, or to that extent. Generally for a ref, if someone is supervising this will come after the game, maybe between periods too. With learning from their mistake first comes admitting that they were wrong with a particular call(s). then admiting that they may need help to improve.
I’m not sure from a refs point of view, but from a players point of view the reffing hasnt improved with the 2 man system, i think there needs to be more critical analysis of each call by the other ref at the end of each period, this may be hard for some refs to do and to take during a game but it needs to be a critical analysis, not a friendly teamwork analysis. Or failing that, since we have found it in our budget to have 2 refs at the game, revert to 1 man and have the other ref sit on the side and perform a proper critical analysis. Though this would detract from critical game time.
I have a friend who used to ref rugby in dunedin at a reasonable level, they are all amateurs here, they have a critical system where every ref gets reviewed by another ref on a regular basis to ensure they are doing a good job, and they dont complain about this, they take it as a way to get better as they are striving for the big time. They dont moan about not getting paid (i would if i was them) and the majority of them will acknowledge when they made a bad call as if they dont they could lose their position or be relegated to a lower level. (no one wants to ref womens rugby)
What i would like from our refs, is for them (i realise some already do this) to accept a bit of help from people who know more than them, or to develop a system which allows for someone to honestly tell them where they went wrong and for that ref to learn from that.
Is this too much to ask or am i being unresonable?thirteenMemberWhen was that table last updated? i thought thunder had won 2 games in regulation plus 1 in ot?
thirteenMember22 players? every NZIHL team has that many in each team!!
thirteenMemberA referee needs to exercise his discretion for each and every call. There is nothing worse when playing a game to have the referee blow his whistles for minor infractions, it slowsthe game down and draws it out. Accidental penalties should only be called if they have a serious consequence. With the notable exception being high sticking as it is a dangerous thing to accidentally let your stick go wandering.
Our referees in New Zealand have a hard job finding that middle ground betweenbeing pedantic, exemplified in the tripping call at hand, and being to lax and so not calling enough penalties, which lets the game get out of hand.thirteenMemberjp bertrand knows kerry goulet, used to play with him or commentate or something
thirteenMemberYea i understand that if it resulted in a player falling down or being sufficiently impeded, in this case the player merely stumbled then continued to skate, had jp fallen then sure. again it is at the referees discretion but i felt it did not warrant a tripping call
thirteenMemberPlod 1 – thirteen 0 Dammit!
People do keep telling me to get out there and ref/line but i cant really be bothered, thats me being honest not me not having the balls to do it id thats what you are thinking. I enjoy being part of the thunder and after being part of the magnificent dunedin thunder supporters netwrok in the weekend (who are much cooler than the stampede supporters network btw) i have decided that if i am not playing for the thunder i will be part of that tremendous crowd bringing warmth to the hearts of those who need it most.
THough when i watch a game i go look at things from a refs point of view, i always have discussions with those knowledgeable around me as to what i would have called in each situation, most ofeten i agree with the refs call, though sometimes it is hard to know exactly what they have called as the announcing is not always perfect and the calls are not always clear to those in the stands. I do appreciate though the fact that the refs see things from a much different angle from those on the benches or indeed us in the stands. I also now, and i stress now, do not complain to the refs if the call was a fair one, though i may question the circumstances to get a betteridea if i was unsure.
I can put my hand up to start lining plod but do you really want top be spending 6 hours each weekend in my company?
thirteenMemberHaha love a bit of old fashioned sexism! but raises a point, one of the jobs of a linesman is to break fights up, if a linesman is not physically able to this they should not be lining, whether male or female. Unfortunately for females they are by and large smaller and less strong than their male counterparts (did i mention dumber too) so they will almost always struggle in this field. Unless they are a gigantic lesbian…
PS im kidding with the sexismPPS Plod which fight was more serious than last year? the defenseless guy getting his head smashed in or the even fight between two willing participants in which neither got seriously hurt but which exited the crowd and rallied a team in need? (say defenseless because of the position he was in he had no way of fighting back)
PPPS plod, not sure if you have ever played hockey but when throwing a hip check on the wall it is quite easy for the back leg to swing out as you are trying for balance, maybe paul scott needs to excersize a little more discretion in making calls rather than get on a tangent of calling pedantic penalties that ruin a game. No one doubts his knowledge of the rules but his fair application of them leaves much to be desired. If he polices like he refs god help us all
