Agreed. Looking forward to thunder performing to potential and Swarm upping their game. The league should have more than 2 horses in the race this year.
vpatrolMemberattendance depends on building and teams. Queenstown the Chch had pretty good numbers. Games vs Stampede and Swarm usually had 200-300 in Chch. Thunder games were low as were Admirals from what I saw.
vpatrolMemberit’s ok Aaron, Ryan didn’t mean it. He knows not what he says!
vpatrolMemberI had heard they may or may not have watched NHL hockey at some stage and have outstanding Dunedin City Council parking fines. Not far from your rumour however.
vpatrolMemberNothing wrong with imports. Lots of teams rely on them. They make locals better and can help give some parity to the league. 5 imports don’t make a team however.
vpatrolMemberTheir season is pretty jam packed. It would take some substantial notice and guarantees for it to work. It would be cool if it did work. Anything for more exposure for fans and more exposure for the IB’s to div 2 calibre competition is good.

Either start in Chch and end in Qtown or vice versa. Plenty of flights and could be cheap enough if the host team billets them.
[/quote:3ixerfe0]part of the strength of AIHL teams is the imports. Any games would be after their season has closed and they generally are gone. There are still high quality aussies obviously however it won’t be a complete club team like the north stars but a mixing of a few teams again. Kind of like “team australia” which came last time.
I also expect that they would eventually want NZ to return the favor and head over their way.
vpatrolMembercommercial appeal needs to be trans tasman. I’m still waiting for league winner to play 4th place aihl team. That’s the place to start since the concept was approved already.
vpatrolMemberwell there would be an audience but not in the traditional sense and not the kind that we would want. ” title=”Wink” />
vpatrolMemberif NZ isn’t playing these teams, they aren’t really involved. Your original “plucking up courage” comment seemed to indicate they would play us since they already have enough courage to go to the asia tourney.
An invitational team compared to a national team would get you around the sticky points however I don’t think they would come here unless you had 4 teams of similar skill wanting to pay for the novelty of playing in NZ while a better competition is going on amongst teams like NZ, Aus, Mex etc.

What value is it to host a tourney for teams like that then? Especially if NZ has no involvement in it? Sure we are stinking rich compared to Indian Hockey but pretty poor in the grand scheme of things. If they wanted to pay to use our venues, I’ll go and watch the games. Only for support though and not with the expectation of seeing great hockey!

I would hate to see India play someone like the IB’s. They would get hurt and embarassed too. Having them come and play some club teams would be great for them but that’s not a winter games thing. IB’s playing team canada would be a blow out but at least there wouldn’t be concerns about players getting killed. A new hockey country like India needs to play countries similar in skill first.
vpatrolMember2 to 1 win for IB’s. Awesome job!
vpatrolMemberAn opportunity to play a team that good is awesome as long as you can look past the score. Keeping them close in the 1st was great.
vpatrolMemberthat would answer it
