I’ve heard nothing about this although the old folk in chch don’t talk to me much since I pretend to be young and hang out with the pimply kids.

I’m not sure I qualify for masters yet.  Over 35 isn’t it?  Could be persuaded to play to stick it to the aussies.

I don’t think the treatment of fighting are similar.  Ref intervention is a little more proactive in my experience.  They jump in very quickly during scuffles.  Heavily frowned upon.

But not as an adult female apparently. And only in a couple of areas as an adult male.

If it made logical sense in some way, that’d be great, but it doesn’t,

well you can lump it into the debate of women contact hockey.  women should then also be permitted to fight etc etc.  All the rules should change.  I’m not sure the rationale for all the female specific rules but if you change one, you should change them all since I imagine the criteria were all influenced by similar arguments.

1.) As an adult, you have a say as to what is acceptable risk for you.

2.) Some faces are worth protecting, others…..not so much!

3.) In the absence of definitive proof of not helping prevent concussions, the default of most leagues is, “wear mouthguards”.  Plus I can elbow/punch you under the chin with a cage on and your teeth are still at risk.

and hockey players should take figure skating because it will improve their edge control.  Sound good?  Maybe those interested in boxing can sign up for boxing.  Otherwise…

I’m just guessing but I’m guessing Active doesn’t have such a close relationship with this kid where he doesn’t mind being called a f**k wit.  If I called someone that when i was 13, I’d extent a beating.  My parent’s would beat me afterwards too.  Good ol days!

you most definately are one if you don’t want to say who you are.  What’s the point of insulting someone online behind an anonymous name?  Make you feel tough?  Make you a better hockey player?  We all know who Active is.  Who are you?

Its an insult to the history of the game!

Not every player needs to or wants to fight.  Gretzky fought once in 20 plus years and it looked liked a spastic swinging of arms.  Was he not man enough to fight?  Was every great player to not fight simply not man enough? garbage.  If Kyle doesn’t want to fight in a game, nothing wrong with that.  There are maybe 2 or 3 people on this forum who have actually been in a hockey fight.  Too many people being tough guys on the ice and on the forum!  I don’t want to see fights all game long.  I’d rather the 60 minutes not include anything that starts a fight.  I’d rather play hockey but if its required, ok.  Huge difference!

This situation isn’t different from rugby at all.

And the reality is, it’s one sport. Youth players emulate senior players – particularly the top level ones. As this topic demonstrates, ‘fighting code’ and this element of hockey culture doesn’t start at senior hockey, youth players pick it up as teenagers, sometimes younger.

Rugby made a decision that the whole sport had to be cleaned up, because telling people to not to do it at one age, but then telling the top level guys it’s OK doesn’t work. Again, no sport works that way.
    [/quote:2h7eoimj]

I think its very different than rugby.  On top of that, the top level of the game doesn’t want it changed.  They don’t see a problem with it.  When one faction sees a problem sees a problem and the other side doesn’t, what happens is status quo.  Fighting stays because pros want it.

By fighting I am talking about proper fighting.  No stick swinging, no elbows to faces, no sucker punches.  Simple straight forward fights.  Lots of people on this forum I think are defending it for the wrong reasons too.  Firstly they are the “gonna run my mouth, cheap shot and skate away kind” and they don’t play the game with any integrity.  I think fighting can be done “cleanly”.  I have no confidence clean fighting will happen in DIHL based on current players but I feel it has a place in the game.  Historically is one defence but simple desire to keep it in because of what it accomplishes is another.  However I can understand someone who didn’t grow up around it and parents who have had no exposure to that culture would find it a negative stain on the sport.

This thread is about dihl games.  The fight topic is not just a dihl discussion anymore.

there’s a problem though.  The top players in the world don’t want to get rid of it.  As opposed to a brawl in rugby, a typical fight in hockey is seen as more controlled.  IIHF wants to eliminate it but nhl format where you face a team more than once has a different context.

NZIHL players on the whole don’t want fights to incur a game suspension.  If the top players in a country don’t want to eliminate fighting, you are fighting an uphill battle.  It’s not a question of will.  It’s a question of not wanting to.  In minor hockey, it should be penalized heavily.  However the primary focus I would say is playing with respect, sportsmanship, technique etc.  Basically learn the skills that prevent most fights from happening.  However there are lots of rat bag kids out there who couldn’t care less about sportsmanship.  I’ll include lots of adults too.

Gretzky would have been a great player even if every player wanted to smash him.  However without knowing he had room to operate due to his enforcers, he would not have had the opportunity to showcase his skills.  Similar to eliminating all the obstruction stuff.  Allowed skilled players to play.  On a side note, Oilers would have won the Cup without Gretzky.  They were that dominant of a team.  They won a Cup after he left with Messier at the helm.
