…so I shouldn’t have left after the 1st period?
vpatrolMemberskim reading is a skill. Not an effective one but good on Wick for trying ” title=”Tongue” />
vpatrolMemberHendrik,
Your efforts are appreciated, more so if this comes to fruition. The only trepidation is the appearance of lack on consultation with the primary users. The actual needs of the users may differ than what you assume them to be. If you have had extensive consultation with the NZIHL, NZIHF, and other relevant bodies, I apologise. It seems what you are looking for is community supoprt/patronage. With such a small community in NZ, the ice hockey folks would need to be part of the process before they can call it their own. Although I was not part of the process in Dunedin, the hockey community rallies around that arena and is quite proud of it because of the input they had in its development. Retrofitting is almost impossible as you say simply because the suitable buildings are few and far between. I think with consultation, you will find some willing people to do some of the leg work and eventually come up with a product suitable to the eventual users. My two cents.
vpatrolMemberummm, what the hell was that? Take some old NHL clips and superimpose some writing and we buy into the idea? Maybe its just me but I thought the world champs means we have had international hockey in NZ. I don’t think I will be putting money down for a deposit on tickets
vpatrolMember$20 million sounds reasonable for that many people to be honest. The 9000+ John Labatt Centre in London Ont cost well over that mark. Although used for hockey, it is used for much more…successfully too I might add. Just ice hockey specific is a completely unreasonable prospect for the current state of ice hockey in NZ. With that many seats, it needs to be multi-functional. It needs to be a Vector arena type gig where basketball/netball can be played or concerts held. It would be hard to get 6000 people who have heard of hockey into that building. Wellington and Auckland would be the only 2 viable locations for such a building I imagine. 1000 seating is more on the mark I would guess for a stand alone ice hockey venue. I thinking the dominant factor here is will it do the job and will it be as cheap as possible

[/quote:3r4ow05a]Yes you can build with both but the NZ proposal quoted is for sand. One of the features of the cooling technology is its semi-permanent nature. Easier to dig up sand and pull it up then destroy concrete and try to pull up the “netting”. Demand for ice in Canada deminishes in summer so some are melted down for inline, lacrosse, indoor soccer etc. The design being thrown around loses many of its features with concrete. Therefore that blog in support seems irrelevant. Multi-sport is just not an option.
vpatrolMemberand as Aaron and I discussed, the blog uses Edmonton to advocate the rink in a box scenario. However that rink is permanent with a concrete pad which speaks of multisport. The NZ designs are permanent with zero prospect of multisport because its built on a sand base and not concrete. Edmonton has no relevence to NZ.
vpatrolMember…with that being said, I’m all for rinks in more communities. I just think the design needs tweaking. I do recognize that one main criteria for the designs is cost effectiveness and semi permanent. If that is the best we can hope for, I would support it. Usage can’t be cost prohibitive though!!!
vpatrolMemberI was about to lambast the design for lack of seating until I found more. However with no seating between the blue lines that I can see, it looks pretty ill conceived as far as serving the NZIHL and any IIHF events or ice skating events or speed skating events….
I don’t know about anyone else but I’m not that keen or thrilled about the hopefull prospect of…if we all act nicely….being adopted by Canada as an ice sports infant.

[/quote:1ebt8hg9]I designed the website for my hichschool in 1997 and created a webquest a few years back. Not sure if that’s the flashy marketting tool a new rink should have
vpatrolMemberThey could start with a better website ” title=”Roll Eyes” />

[/quote:286syp5i]Yeah, we’re really sick of all you people coming here and talking about ice hockey.
I mean Vince, c’mon. 242 posts? Are you some sort of loser or something? Sheez.
[/quote:286syp5i]It’s a problem, I know. Forums aren’t mean to transfer information on a daily or even weekly basis. That’s ridiculous. Have no fear though, I’ve just joined the Addicted to forums forum and as long as I don’t kicked off that for reading too much, I should recover. At least that’s what the free psychiatry forum says (I was kicked off that for accidentally checking it twice in one day)
vpatrolMemberHey Kyle, I can probably do a few more of the 430 games if you still need the help. I’m not as busy as I thought.

I personally don’t think so so good on ya for bringing something up that wasn’t even related to me. Although I may not have been a part of the Thunder before this year I have heard several stories and points of view from nearly everyone that was involved. From what I’ve heard the team had issues last year with coaching and management. I started out having fun talking about the upcoming season and hoped you would look at forum talk a little more entertainingly instead of offensive but from the looks of you checking it 24/7 this is serious business to you. Have fun with your upcoming season and good luck this year because the Thunder are a different team and I think are going to surprise you.
[/quote:24dnac51]I’m happy to take insults and give them back from people I know. They also know I played Thunder. They know I support Thunder and would not be surprised to see them do well. However when some new guy starts running his mouth, that’s when I get annoyed. Maybe you should let your playing do the talk instead of your mouth.
And Dunedin hockey was/is serious for me. I would like it to do well as my other posts will show. But you would have known that. I’ll apologize to Kyle for checking in on the forum too often. Not like anything important like worlds are coming up. Sincere apologies defense101
vpatrolMemberThat certainly is interesting. A large spectacle type game could have some positive effects for us lowly domestic players and our leagues. I patiently wait for more news!
